A few of you have jumped on and pointed out that if you shoot in RAW, even if you are shooting BW you will retain all the colour info Of course you're right, and I hope these tips help you I think the question came from an Instagrammer who is likely shooting in jpg, so the answer is geared towards those who don't shoot RAW for Instagram I'm actually one of them I only have a 16GB iPhone which always seems to be too full, so shooting and editing jpg from my X100 is a workflow which works well for me RAW is saved for my professional work Comment from : Sean Tucker |
I just learn this idea and I'm taking Amazing black and white photographs just on my Track phone!👍🙂 Comment from : JoshiaYaziirLeon Vega |

Thanks for this Sean - have been working with tone curves but the subtle difference the HSL makes will take it to the next level 👏 Comment from : 📸 MD Hendry Photography |
Really enjoying Sean's tutorials, very clear and concise explanations I am looking to move on from iPhone photography to something that offers more opportunity for control and creativity To that end have recently bought a GR3 which I am gradually (and I mean gradually) getting to grips with via YouTube clips, especially Sean's Any opinions on whether I should shoot RAW from the off or start out with JPEG and move to RAW as my abilities with the GR3 (hopefully) improve? Comment from : Tony Hacche |
Thank you for this tutorial, it has increased my understanding of how to use curves Comment from : Capture Allen |

Shoot both raw and jpg, the jpg can be black n white but the raw file will be in color by default holding all digital data that can be edited later Comment from : J V |
Interesting I tend to use Snapseed to achieve similar effects Both appear great tools and invaluable for most of us processing our digital images and posting them on social media or producing photo books Thanks for showing us your processes Comment from : Carmen Fissenden |

Sean, haven't you considered repeating the content of this video using Photoshop for it? Steps in the video speak of the technique(s) regulating your visualization of the work and it is just that what would be relevant to observe its "how" within the Photoshop environment Comment from : Sergio Sotomayor Prat |
❤️❤️❤️❤️ Comment from : PINOY KOOK |
Interestingly, I believe that B&W imagery AUTOMATICALLY invokes in the brain a sense that "THIS is ACTUALLY photographic ART" that we don't get automatically from a colour image I would LOVE to get my hands on a "Leica M Monochrom" which has no RGB coloured-filter-dot array over the sensor Comment from : Christopher Grove |
I use the histogram before I start pulling slidersbrbrBy doing that, I know where the colors are Comment from : Todd |
Hey Sean Thanks a lot for this one Very nice and helpful ! I got one question When I crop my photo in darkroom for instagram ratio, the photo has a dimension of 4000x5000 Is that still okay for IG I don’t want to loose quality when IG do something with that dimension Thank you Comment from : Cem Canli |
So very galing ng host na to like ur strategy sir sana all Comment from : Nene Channel |

cool, now a photographer can go out and shoot instead of fixing their photo for a whole day easy, direct and natural looking photos young photographers nowadays spend time on tecnical aspect of their cameras and digital photoshop work Comment from : W8t enk1LL |
Snapseed good and easy!! Comment from : puspen bain |
Thanks for great idea!! Comment from : puspen bain |

Thanks for your tutorial, but that's not really B&W photography You make it look like an afterthought Black & White means to work with light, darkness, textures and filters right from the start Whether you use a film, DSLR or a mirrorless camera (the second shows the final result in real time) you should "see" the world in B&W I know most digital cameras let you shoot B&W images only in jpg (Raw will always contain color information unless you use an overpriced Leica Monochrome), jpgs are good enough for social media Shooting directly in B&W is way more challenging as it is quite easy to get overblown highlights, but when done properly gives you such organic images that overprocessed images created by adjusting the color channels (RGB) cannot match Comment from : Boris Pradel |
I found this extremely interesting and helpful as other of your videos I’m sure it will help me edit my bw shots to be more dramatic I would be very interested in a video on how you edit color photos Thanks so much for your willingness to share your experience and expertise Comment from : Cliff Blackerby |
On the fuji x (don't own the others) you can do this in-camera Of course the By or Br and Acros filter modes But also, you can set an extreme white balance which is taken into bw Even custom balance of coloured objects and the wb shifts to extremes This way is more control obviously but I got into that learning about 'ortho' film and gives some effects whilst shooting Maybe I will add RAW and try this too Good thing about that is don't even need a RAW converter, I can export via camera to default settings too Comment from : jorgepeterbarton |
Definitely would love to see how you do color images Comment from : Shane Griffin |
Is it same black and white convert clicking black and white rather than downing saturation slider in Lightroom if I use Lightroom Confused some photographer say it is better quality if I click black an white rather than saturation slider? Comment from : Pema Tamang |
