As a long term worker in the non-profit world and I battle peoples thoughts about non-profits everyday My pay is a joke, I do fundraising, and where I work is all direct services therefore overhead Donations help pay the salaries of the people who do the work

Non profits and society tend to have black and white mindsets and nuance is forgotten

crap as expected from most ted talks

Interesting talk and valid points Many charities do pay competitive wages and invest in processes and programs to expand their business I think the challenge is a small percentage of charities spend more money on “overhead” than actually is spent on the issue or problem that the charity was created to solve Even When the money raised increases year over year Most philanthropic people or institutions do not want less than 30 of their contribution to go to the people in need Many organizations/people do pay or enter into the “at risk” stage of starting a charitable organization They realize the expenses will be high in the beginning but expect the to come down over time

I was 100 with Dan right up until he blamed a set of people in the Christian faith for the problem I was at World Vision, one of the largest Christian faith-based NGOs in the world (one of the "Hunger Charities" in his chart with low compensation), and at least 13 years before this TED talk, we were innovating like a for-profit company that many other non-profits have followed since The founders of Charity Water, also for-profit-like innovators, are Christians and got into philanthropy via inspiration from Mercy Ships (a Christian charity) In my view it's the opposite: most of the high levels of scrutiny I have seen over the years have been from the government, secular watchdog groups, the media, and non-faith-based donors

here's an update on that stat for of GDP: brGiving dipped as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP), from 22 to 21 The economic data is from Giving USA 2022, published annually by the Giving USA Foundation with research from the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana University So so sad and unnecessary

Self-Issued Currency
The owners of the Federal Reserve create the currency called Dollars If they wanted to circulate their Dollars by infusing them into health and human services causes the same way they circulate by infusing their Dollars into war causes, for example, they could Apparently, they don't So besides changing the way we think about charity, we can also change the way we think about currency Instead of using and accepting and chasing after the currency of those who don't value health and human services, we can chase after a new form of currency that is issued by people who DO value health and human services, and who circulate their currency accordingly This new form of currency could be as simple as the gift certificate, and you could become an issuer These changes in thinking could bring abundance to all the good causes out there that seem to be in a perpetual state of struggle

Denise Ward
Having charities is not changing the world It's just shuffling the deckchairs There is no need for charity if we didn't have interest on money Why is nobody talking about interest? Or how money is created? Why do we have to have "loans"? Why is there never enough money for our needs? Money is an arbitrary game, it should cater to all our needs if it purports to be a good system Having to take out loans is an admission that the system cannot sufficiently meet our needs Therefor change the system or get a new one You don't have charities for one thing You completely change the structure from pyramid, linear, vertical, supremacy/inferiority to a hub-and-spoke structure like in nature This gives every person sovereignty and body autonomy If you want to change the world you don't just shift the deckchairs
Comment from : Denise Ward

Solel Soleil
Funny: EU countries tax their people and provide services without advertising, nor astronomical CEO salaries, provide education with free or heavily subsidized tuition and feed and house their poor Even right wing governments in Europe have not and dare not dismantle the welfare state US and England are pitifully backward Are millionaires in the US necessarily happier No He is an apologist for a backward system

The problem with this video is that it seems that the logic of why there are so much poverty and other social issues it’s because non profits are not having enough money to help people in need I mean, of course money helps, but that is not THE final solution, it just covers the real roots of the many social issues we have nowadays brWe cannot solve what we don’t understand So actually I only agree with the man in the part of investing more in people education and preparation for innovation But to do that means investing not just in the school system, but in the teachers and opportunities for the new professional and in the social networks, and in better research, and……brSo, solving social issues is never and should never have a simple solution
Comment from : Arlene Sánchez

Austin Daily
Amazing
Comment from : Austin Daily

Katherine Bourdiline
Here's an alternate suggestion brbrIf an issue is important enough, we shouldn't be relying on private organizations to solve itbrbrFor example, implementing universal healthcare is better solution than relying on a charity to pay off someone's medical debtbrbrFor other issues like poverty and homelessness, we should address the root causes Income inequality and the rising cost of livingbrbrI don't trust the economic system and CEO's that created these issues to solve them

He says that private companies like Coca Cola can grow more easily than charities because they can spend more on marketingbrHis solution is to let charities spend more on marketingbrBut how about the opposite? Reduce the amount that corporations spend on marketingbrEspecially those which are already huge, and provide little social benefit
Comment from : maybepumpkins

Ewa OConnor
Mother Theresa did not ask for $ 05 mln salary to help the poorest of the poor That kind of money would prevent thousands of staving children from dying a year They only need $20 per month to survive… Let’s find both talented and compassionate people to run charities Also we can have one charity raising millions or a million people supporting their communities… I think we need both
Comment from : Ewa OConnor

Amanda Soares

A O
This would be great if throwing more money at poverty would fix it Poverty is very much a cultural problem that any amount of money won’t fix Look at Native American communities that were suddenly injected with huge amounts of Casino money, crime skyrockets, drug and alcohol use increases, productivity of any kind all but stops, and school attendance falls off the charts Money is not the issue, what would happen if we could give every impoverished person 100,000$? I promise you it would be a total disaster

I definitely don't expect people to all be volunteers but I don't believe that people should be making millions working for a non-profit Spending money on overhead when done correctly is absolutely necessary but making a $100,00-250,000 is more than enough

Actually Calvinists came to have a far more insidious belief that worldly success was actually a sign of Divine Approbation, that riches meant that one must be one of The ElectbrbrThere's a famous apocryphal story that when he gave money to the University of Chicago to build a chapel, John D Rockefeller requested that it contain a stained-glass window with a very big needle and a very small camel
Comment from : Paul Quinn

Paul Quinn
But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:brbrThat thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openlybrbrMatthew 6:3-4brbrModern English translations of the bible water-down that famous last verse from 1 Corinthians 13 with 'the greatest of these is love', and it is recited at sappy weddings ad-nauseum This was not the kind of 'love' Paul had in mind since the original Greek is the Socratic 'agape' The KJV translators were closer to the mark with translating it as 'charity'

If charitable giving stays steady at 2 of GDP, and advertising uses donated dollars to bring in more dollars, isn't that just taking money away from another charity?

Alex Yates
Overhead makes a product more expensive If I'm buying social good, you have to prove to me that your higher cost product gives me more social good per dollar than the competition I agree it helps you grow more, but does that mean more total good? You might simply be taking market share away from the competition If I'm going to pay a premium to watch you grow more I need proof that it sufficiently increases the total amount of that good, not just your share of that market I agree with a lot of your points, but you need to prove a charity's bang-for-your-buck somehow, and sadly overhead is one of the best ways we have to do that
Comment from : Alex Yates

IceFalcon
Still murky and hard to define exactly what these people are doing and much harder to prove if it’s a hurt or a help

M H
Thank you! Really clear point on the so far overlooked or downplayed importance of overhead costs in non profit organisations, I truly support the message that investment in overhead is just as important as the direct service delivery since both are indispensible for it I am a little surprised however that there is no mentioning on the government's role at the beginning when talking about "stuck" in social problems such as poverty for many years While this might go beyond the time frame of this video, not mentioning the government's role in tackling social problems sounds like leaving a central player out of the game

It's hard to justify such extreme overhead with huge CEO salaries in nonprofits such as United Way or Joel Olsteen's net worth of $50 million He's a preacher for a church that doesn't have to pay taxes or report their donors, and he lives in multi million dollar homes in the lap of luxury You don't have to spread the word of God by living a gilded life It's hypocritical and greedy I understand the need to invest in order to see your return and be able to affect change on a larger scale, but the extremes in financial spending on staff cast doubt about the true mission of organizations in the high profile churches and nonprofits

Sounds terrible honestly billions spend on worthless work if the donating amount never changes doesn't that imply the large growing charities just take money from the small ones that don't advertise?brDo the people who donate not also need money? What is the overall return on investment ie someone donates 100$ they lose out on quality of life but the idea is that some poor person can get themselves more quality for it, now you take half away to invest locally is the rest still enough to come on top in overall happiness? There isn't an infinite supply of money and spending money in an endless circle jerk of begging for donations instead of actually improving lifes is just wasted effort, not to mention the return on investment of the donated money is huge as well brYou donate a trillion $ as a nation to uplift poorer countries and grow their economies rather than producing endless garbage and said country will enjoy a good quality of life for it's citizens in no time, now you never have to donate to them again and they will donate some themselvesbrLeave it to a capitalist to say the best way to help people is to make ads and make sure donations never actualy go to their intended target, missing the target by a lightyear, his approach is to just make people donate more guilt them into fixing problems they are not responsible for just because corporations can't help themselves but ruin the planet in their search for unending growthbrReminds me of the Sci-fi story of the grey goo, where some nano machines infinetly reproduce turning all matter into more of itself, well it's allready here and it's allready hard at work

All fame, benefits, achievements and failures are fleeting like smoke We are born into the world bringing no material objects in our mothers' wombs and we will pass away unexpectedly bringing no material objects to heaven, netherworld or oblivion Unfortunately, we are born into systems where we require resources to survive and thrive Thus it will be unrealistic to liquidate our resources to bring pain and suffering to ourselves, our familia and future generations Why not make small charitable donations once a month or year? Even a few cents counts or volunteer time or expertise to the unfortunate?
