Whats the model number, im considering one like it and want to make sure or the model Comment from : JR Armstrong |
How much do you pay for that motor? Comment from : Francisco Rodriguez |
Your biggest problem is you dont have enough room for anything to breath and cool Instalation instructions even state that the whole unit needs to be a minimum of 12 inches away from walls in all directions Yours is directly against 2 walls no room for air circulation yo keep everything cool Move it away from your walls and out of the corner You will stop burning motors Comment from : Joe Hudak |
That’s pretty sad 😞 To pay $890000, or whatever for this unit One ☝️ thing ya could do, is buy another air compressor, and use the receipt 🧾 to it, to take the original air compressor back I understand that the one ☝️ year warranty was over, but the company should have warranted the next motor I think 🤔 there’s a defect in the manufacture 👨 of the motor I know it would be way less of a hassle to go buy an equivalent motor from a reputable supplier, than to tear your air compressor out, go buy another one ☝️, install it, and take your first air compressor back I’d probably be trying to get a settlement out of the company, or the store 🏬 I work for our Tractor 🚜 Supply distribution warehouse, but I’ve never 👎 heard of the motor on these Ingersoll Rand air compressors going bad Sorry 😞 about the long comment (and the emojis) Belt tension may have been a factor Being too tight, it was probably imposing too much of a load on the motor I’m also surprised 😮 that the motors on these are not thermally overload protected Your friend, Jeff Comment from : Jeffrey Hickman |
One guy I saw had one this model and his was running high amps (in excess of the 21-22 it says it pulls) at 175psi It was suggested that perhaps his pressure switch may have died as a result, so he got another switch (Square D, NOT the Ingersoll oem replacement) He had a regulator on his outflow that was rated for 155psi so he lowered the pressure on the compressor to 150 and that dropped the amperage pull down around the @21 that it was rated for I’m not really sure how excess amps affect the pressure switch, but thought it might be relevant Comment from : Russ Jordan |

The BBB is a jokenothing more than a private corporation that "rates" a business Like if YOU made a list and said good/bad company They can't DO anything Talk to your local state consumer protection dept THEY can actually DO something under the state laws and file a case against the business even a class action suit Comment from : MrMotofy |

Cheapo compressor sellers use garbage motors from overseas but you can install an American-made quality motor easily I've done it on several compressors for self and friends The GE motor on my old 5HP Sanborn from the 1980s runs great but the mystery shit it came with died after about eight years hobby usebrbrSaylor-Beall are a very old industrial compressor maker (who really needs to advertise better, I mentioned that to them) who make (not merely "assemble" their compressors in the USA I learned about them by buying two 5 HP units used at auction for next to nothing because the other bidders didn't know it's easy to replace three phase motors or run them off an RPC or VFD like I do my lathe brThey're rugged and durable machines, and of course new single phase SBs are available They are the answer to my air questbrbrAfter owning two I'd absolutely buy a new one if I needed to but now I want more used Saylor-Bealls In order to get 10HP the seller ran two 5HP units for blasting or just one for general shop work which is common Compressors are neat because you can plumb them together with large ID hose and Chicago fittings to use them together or separately feeding one header tank (with or without its own compressor) Comment from : Ob Fuscated |
I have had the same unit for 4 yrs and use it in my farm shop Mine has worked well with literally no issues Your motor is definitely dying prematurely, very strange Comment from : TheRice07 |
Get a TEFC motor Also, sounded like your centrifugal switch was stuck open Easy fix to get a new one but should last a lot longer than 6 months PPS, it wasn't the belt Comment from : David Chavez |
Most compressor manufactures want to make their specs seem better than the next guy One way to do this is to run the motor on the service factor If the motor is 100HP, SF is 115 , they will design the compressor to run at 115HP when fully loaded This WILL cause a shortened motor life Comment from : Mark Elliott |
Normally, when a part fails under warranty reputable manufacturers will at least extend the warranty on that part Interestingly, Ingersoll has troubleshooting videos on YouTube! brI buy "Made In America" when the quality and overall value is on par with a similar product made in Europe Sadly, most of my stuff is made in Germany, Italy, and Japan Comment from : Juan Esteban |
Tighten your belt properly and install a magnetic starter Comment from : RICHGCOOP1 |
I was shopping for a new 80 gal IR and 2 of the 5 places I went to told me they have been having ALOT of returns for everything from motor failure to pressure switches "Assembled" in USA is the word-smith version of they're still using chicom garbage parts 10-20yrs ago it was different, but IR made their name now have gone cheap I wont go near them Comment from : swede760 |
Would you mind giving the model number and bran if the motor? The link isn't working anymore Comment from : James Dixon |
I agree I bought mine 15 years agothe condenser fell apart, that was never put on properly in the first place IR wanted $400 to replace the condensertheir customer service suck Comment from : Brian McLees |
I have that compressor The new one had a rattle to it I have used it with a die grinder for head porting and it will run constantly for about two hours straight Ingersol replaced it in my own shop with one of their techs I still have the 60 gallon compressor from Ingersol that I’ve had for 18 years Comment from : David leary |
Air compressors are expensive, for the average Joe it might be the most expensive piece of equipment in his garage The bad news is that good quality air compressors are REALLY expensive which puts them out of reach for many average Joe's I fault the compressor mfg's for trying to put out a unit of this size (80 gal/2 stg) unit with only a 5 hp motor I personally think the smallest motor they should put on a compressor that is pushing 15+ cfm at 90 psi is a 75 hp But the mfg's put the smaller motors and less accessories to keep the price at a point that Joe can tell his buddies he's got an 80 gallon compressor in the garage Comment from : 92xl |
Thank you Comment from : Jimmey Mcgee |
A bit too late, but the biggest issue I see with all of these supposedly higher horsepower compressors is that the manufacturer doesn't include or makes optional a magnetic starter This is the majority of the problem accounting for the numerous pressure switch and motors burning up This is what costs with other manufacturer when included You can add one yourself for less, but marketing fools many into thinking otherwise Comment from : Boss Hawg |
the start capasator is out of it replace it and you are good 2 go Comment from : james johnson |
Usually that loud buzz when you try to start it means the start capacitor is bad Comment from : daubendiek |

Why do people use valuable garage space by putting their air compressor right next to the door? Put it in the back, or a remote location and pipe the compressed air to multiple outlets Comment from : Eric Johnson |
Looking into purchasing this air compressor and stumbled upon this video Your problem might have to do with how close to the wall you have it mounted and possibly limiting cooling air flowjust food for thought Comment from : Anthony Lorek |
If it was out of warranty you have no complaint Maybe you should purchase a Balder motor instead Comment from : Mustang Ecoboost HPP |

Some of the motors they use cost around $200, or somewhere in that range If you’re running an two-stage compressor pump, I’d recommend purchasing a better motor Anything in the $500 range, and above is good Frankly, I’d recommend purchasing a Baldor motor They’re beasts!!!!! Comment from : FYOF |

Ingersol Rand and Rigid Tools have lost their credibility with customers Goodyear Tire licensed their name to Titan for farm tractor tires which should be considered false advertising This compressor head is made in China ,the motor is made in Mexico , the tank used to be manufactured in the USA This unit is assembled in the USA Want a Good air compressor , buy a Quincy Comment from : VIC Petrishak |

Same here I have the very same compressor New motor installed under warranty This time the reed valves blew The part is 400 bucks USD It’s half the cost of a new one What is it about air compressors failing? I used mine for lightweight home garage duties Tires, bike lift, etc So disappointed Comment from : Cliff and Howie |
I watched your more recent video that Ingersoll Rand finally responded to you We should all know that they did because you are on Youtube and they know the damage this can cause so they did Good luck for most other customers that don't publish their bad experiences on social media This line of compressor are clearly the typical consumer grade craps out there Comment from : V Sohn |

IR tech here, the other bozo talking about 13 amps is incorrect Those motors are rated for 208-230/1 @23-25 amps, clearly has no clue No compressor under 75hp needs a contractor , the motor has an overload built into it That’s what the red button is Now I agree with the tech that came out, those motors are TRASH We replace them all the time to the point that IR came out with a separate CCN if your voltage was 208 That SS5 pump? Also trash, wait until the valve plate to head gasket blows internally between the stages and the unit quits making air properly With a recip compressor ALWAYS go with a pressure lube over a splash line Comment from : Air compressor training |
you cant over breaker it, 50 may be to big, and allow to much amperage to it, Comment from : Legacy Garage |

What was the ‘run’ current of the motor, at cutoff pressure? A digital meter will NOT give an accurate load measurement You could have a bad compressor, that only shows excessive load only at higher pressures Good luck… Comment from : Duane Baalson |
Bad capacitor Comment from : Jesse Robinson |

I thoroughly enjoyed your video (and the follow up) and your down-to-earth presentation style Great job! I do have one question though: What is that white stuff that shoots out of the motor/belt/pulley area on top of the compressor towards you every time you turn the compressor on? It seems to shoot out at the exact same time you hear the chirp from the belt slipping I was thinking maybe frozen condensation (ice) created by a release of the compressed air to atmospheric pressure??? You can see it at 7:31 and 9:10 Just curious Comment from : William A Zinnikas |
We have let China kill American built, to save a buck, while telling each other to buy product from the company "WE" work for I don't mind manufacturing defects, but Ingersoll Rand should have taken care of you, period! To offer you a "Credit" for more product? They should have sent you an apology and a check Or better for them, they should have replaced it, to study what happened instead of you doing all the work You shouldn't be the one trying to figure out why they failed They owe you a check for this video lol But I want to finish with saying thank you I'm disappointed with them and you have sent me in another direction Now get back to building cars lol Subscribed :) Comment from : James Doyle |
He pretends to take it apart and fix it when in fact there was never anything wrong with it just wanted to make a video Comment from : Kevin Hlavati |
