Royale Crafts
How can I purple patina coat a piece of copper?
Comment from : Royale Crafts

Michael Lapore
I believe you've got it backwards! Dilute hno3 dissolves Cu fast, and 100 hno3 will only make Cu turn green , until h2o is added! At least in my lab!
Comment from : Michael Lapore

joete piolin
Why does the idiots wear masks? And i meant not chemical protection masks there
Comment from : joete piolin

fisk7aal
Ohh man, I thought there had been a coin forgery

The reaction displayed was not balanced for concentrated nitric acid Cu+4HNO3 is right
Comment from : Jig Vig

Yute Hube
In 2016, a silver 2p coin was discovered in a charity collection tin and sold at auction for £1,350 What if this just had the copper layer dissolved away? How could anyone know?
Comment from : Yute Hube

Dee
Oh my gosh the professor really looks the same as his school photo, same hair and everything
Comment from : Dee

Yute-Hube
What if the one at room temp was in a fridge at 5°C? Is it possible to end up with a stripped 2p with no copper coating but, it's preserved well as a silver looking coin? One more question - I have seen that silver 2p coins have turned up in public and they sell for many times more than their face value, in fact I think only one has ever turned up like that and it was found in one of those plastic charity collection tubs but what if that was just made with a slow (cold) acid process? Coins could be faked this way?
Comment from : Yute-Hube

Don E Kern jr
Lol great demo 😂

Todd Cooper
Where do those fumes go after the fumehood?
Comment from : Todd Cooper

John Wilson
If you ever get hold of an American one cent coin, please try nitric acid on it! The American cent is copper coated like the British penny, but the inside is zinc rather than iron
Comment from : John Wilson

Great man you are! Thanks for being so passionate
Comment from : Eracer

King Wesley
I disagree with the common approach to Science I believe hypothesis is pointless You don't need to know what will happen, only that you think something should, or that you know something should There is always information that can be evaluated as influence on the experiment that can be isolated Just because we are not currently looking at it or think we have a bias answer does not change the outcomebrbrBasically: Hypothesis creates biased science
Comment from : King Wesley

What a great video and superb channel

Plot Twist: The professor wrote the book about iron and nitric acid!
Comment from : Derek

Not the Messiah
What does it do to limestone? IbrThe weathering on the Sphinx suggests it could be tens of thousands of years old but if combustion produces nitrogen dioxide and acid rain perhaps it happened in a short time during a cataclysmic eventbrIt barely rains there and the Sphinx was buried for a long time but the erosion is deep and it is supposed to be around 1/20th of a centimetre every 100 years
Comment from : Not the Messiah

Eldon Janzen
"When you read in a book that actually happens" that's why I like read older chemistry texts from 1820 to 1890's they don't glamorize the experiments with lots theories

Jeff Evarts
You have the two reactions backwards: The concentrated acid is slower because of passivation You should probably fix that
Comment from : Jeff Evarts

Roy Kenyon
Dissolving Iron (Fe) in Nitric Acid at high concentrations creates an exothermic reaction which in turn creates high levels of NOx, cooling is required to slow down the reaction to create iron nitrate and reduce the runaway effect you’re seeing thus reducing the NOx created
Comment from : Roy Kenyon

Trimbak Narote
Sir which chemical in world thos application makes on copper metal push iron metal
Comment from : Trimbak Narote

CRAZY DAD
Wish I could get gold of some concentrate nitric acid,so hard to get hold of without a licence

Ben773807
Naughty Naughty, The Coinage Act 1971 makes it an offence to destroy / deface metal coins that have been current in the UK since 1969, unless a licence to do so has been granted by the Treasury
Comment from : Ben773807

Paul Oakwood
This 'professor' (and his haircut) are straight out of Central Casting
Comment from : Paul Oakwood

farpointgamingdirect
I hate it when people say that an experiment fails; an experiment does not fail; the scientist doesnt meet the requirements needed

wernergraff
Additionally interesting: even though only a thin piece of the coin remained, the queen was still visible So can we assume the embossing reaches very deep into the coin (deformed structure of the lattice)?
Comment from : wernergraff

burgersnchips
If you leave the copper-stripped steel coin for a while I presume it would get some surface rust How similar would it look to the original once it's started to rust?
Comment from : burgersnchips

Blockstacker561
Don't react organic substances with a mixture of nitric and sulfuric acidbrbrbrWorst mistake of my life

Comment from : Иван Иванович

Zank Garage
Wonderful video as always, i have a weak point for oxidizers and explosions i noticed that Neil was wearing nitrile gloves while handling the RFNA Please don't, it is really dangerous, they spontaneously combust like the aniline does in a matter of seconds i tried it for myself and i was shocked!
Comment from : Zank Garage

Jonathan Weinraub
I remember in lab my blue gloves had yellow stains from the sulphuric acid and I didn’t see any splash on me So glad, the gloves

Frank Hauser
This video explained a lot! 40 years ago, a classmate of mine performed this experiment unnoticed We noticed it when he caughed and fell to the floor, the beaker standing on the lab desk The reaction was extremely violent with dark brown fumes I managed to hold my breath and put the beaker under the hood, while others took him out of the room That was the last day I saw him, we later heard he lost 50 of his lungs brEveryone please be warned
Comment from : Frank Hauser

Bisht ji
Hats off to all of the scientists risking their life for our studybr(◠‿・)—☆
