For an open course, the language style of the presenter should to take into consideration the online viewers ability to comprehend spoken references to things off screen Pointing to something off screen on a board and saying to the audience "if you don't include specific information, you get that" What is the "that" she is pointing to? For the online viewer, it is an incomplete thought The presenter does this repeatedly This leaves uncertainty for the learner It lacks quality, and risks poor outcomes and inequalities for those in your blind spots who need a quality that is consistent This is the challenge in presenting courses with such a knowledgeable and excellent in person presenter At 14:07 a student makes the exact point I am making about the slide of laundry process consideration description Comment from : Broken Ruler Labs |

My big takeaways:brbrAre the learning outcomes Specific, measurable, and realistic? brbrWould you know if a student achieved those learning outcomes? Comment from : Michael J Morgan |

This has some very interesting points about teaching that I'd like to incorporate into my autodidactic learningbrbrHowever, what is up with all those comments that just ape the title of the course and how great it was? Is this some kind of AI experiment, or were some people just told to write a bunch of meaningless comments? Are these bots?brbrThe title is "3 Designing a Course: Developing Learning Outcomes", and like 80 of the comments might as well bebr"I like how you 3 Designing a Course, especially when Developing Learning Outcomes"brbrLooks a lot like attempts to game SEO rankings, but I somehow doubt that MIT OCW has any need for fake SEO Or does it? Notes:brbr- Dominant learning theories are valid but the one you should be exercising depends on who your students are and what you want them to learn br- Coming up with learning outcomes is really important Once you have a set of learning outcomes, your course syllabus is easy to design br- If you write a good syllabus, you'll get fewer questions (when is the test, what do we need to know, how will we be graded, etc) br- Most tests don't do a good job of validating that students actually "get it" They tend to validate other things that are easy to game br- You need to define: What does it mean when someone "gets it"? br- She has the students read a detailed procedure, and then guess what the activity procedure was describing: br - This was used to demonstrate how important it is to convey your desired learning outcome - your students are gaining something from this What superpower are they gaining?brbr- Your learning outcome has to be clear and concise Your course needs one, as does every module For example: br- By the end of this course, you'll be able to: br - Describe constructive alignment and backwards design br - Classify the content of a course you're teaching br - Create measurable, specific, and realistic learning outcomes br - State the components of a syllabusbr- Constructive alignment is really important! It's when you have alignment between: br - Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs): What should learners know or be able to do? br - Teaching Learning Activities (TLAs): How will the learners learn? br - Assessment tasks: How will learning be measured? br- Learning outcomes are the hardest part; they require the most thinking because they need to be measurable But once you have a solid learning outcome, the learning activities and assessments almost take care of themselves br- Every assignment needs a learning outcome - "after completing this assignment, you will be able to"brbrFull notes with images of Bloom's Taxonomy: wwwkarmafm/p/FXZIqVn/designing-a-course-developing-learning-outcomes Comment from : MackMaker |
