I have very lofty ideas and sprawling concepts; I've been somewhat frustrated with actually making a game But I found a hands-on learning site for gdscript All I have to do now is learn hard and contain my idea sprawl Sitting down and being an info sponge is not the way to learn, doing short lessons that have practices at the end is way better I'm not advertising gdquest but it's helping this person with a small amount of adhd turn it into a game

Jammahan
Thank you sooo much for saying this! I love how you just talked about the daily tasks and skill sets of each role, along with what kind of person/interests align with the role Everywhere I see, people attribute this a race war between game art, game programming, and game design when they're all supposed to work together Even in college, by teachers, everyone had to validate why there tribe was the best and for the longest time I never had a concrete understanding about what they (especially game designers do I would love to see more videos on game design and all the other stuff that go into the process (pre-planning, producing, quality assurance, etc) Love your insights

Funny Guy
I've done programming, level design, 3D design, cyber security, etc One question I always had that is mentioned MANY times in this video alone is "Getting in the industry" After 10 years I had zero luck finding any jobs for programming, design, etc How are people finding these jobs and where should I be looking?

Do what im doing and learn both, make this video irrelevant 😂 in my opinion though design is more important than code especially for games with abilities that arent real The code should mimic what you want the design to be, code can be done in countless ways to do what you want it to do but design needs to be perfect and is a lot harder to redo if you get it wrong

I found this video because as my sons get older, I want to start nurturing and encouraging what they can do IRL to support themselves while doing things they’re currently interested in For my eldest, perhaps game development and testing and my youngest who’s really into mechanical engineering in the sense he is an artist and draws allot of vehicles, weapons and accessories including armor On the game designer, development front, can you recommend or offer some advice as to where to get started? I’m wanting to send them videos that can help guide them to where they need to start My eldest is 16, so I’m trying to send him stuff that will peak his 16 year old mind

Where would you suggest to start if you have none of the skills (yet Think blank slate) but many ideas in different genres of games As in, game play, how it looks, how it progresses, dialog, etc It sounds like this is more game design than programming I guess I just don't know the next steps

Great video Jason! I'm so happy to have stumbled upon your video My name is Tuyo from NigeriabrI'm very very very interested in Game Developer (I've been for a very long time) I just recently transitioned from a Biological Sciences field into tech, in 2022 Currently on the path to becoming a Cloud Engineer (started in April 2022 at Altschool Africa, will be done in March and go for internships, I hope I get somewhere related to gaming)brI chose cloud because (1) I couldn't find a more defined path to learn game design like I did for cloud here (2) I read about cloud gaming, researched, and wondered if being a cloud engineer would help leveraging cloud resources for gamingbrWhat I need is a defined path to becoming a game developer Would appreciate your help

As an new indie game developer who is having to do everything, what I learned from this video is I really REALLY wish I could afford to hire a game coder to help free me to be just a designer brI'm having to learn to code enough to finish my first game Hopefully at least, if I can grow my company for future games my coding knowledge will just make it easier to work with programmers and be a better designer for them to work for

I tell people designing is what makes the level come alive and coding is what builds the level So designing is like the lipstick and mascara it dresses up the levels with trees , rocks , grass , building textures so on Coding is what creats the level

I'd definitely be very interested in a video about pay differences between designers and programmers/coders How the entry level and top pay varies from designer and developer I'm starting school soon and want to make sure I'm going to take the correct courses for what interests me more If you could also go in depth on what skills or personality types are better for both too that would help give me great insightbrPlease make the video!! This is a great explanation of the differences and benefits of game programming and game design Game programmers do get paid more and have better job security/growth, especially since you can transition to different industries outside of gaming And I agree game programming is hard And even harder than many projects that don't involve games But I don't know if I would agree with the claim that it is harder than 90 of the projects out there It ultimately depends on the project itself and the goals one is trying to achieve with that project I would argue that programming distributed file systems, operating systems, and artificial intelligence/machine learning, are just as hard, if not harder, than game programming

Doing game design is similar to being a fantasy author Imagining cool situations and characters in your head is one thing, getting it down on paper and hashing out every single detail in a way viewers/readers will enjoy in reality is another

Alan Curson
I curently am in university and 4 months away from my Bacholers degree in Game Design I want to say thank you, this has helped me see the difference between the two because though I have learned alot about game design I learned what is probably considered basics of coding and I am not very good at it but I was really hoping I would be better at coding comeing in to my degree, I was under the impression that coding was synonamous with game design and I did not really understand why I did not have more classes going over C#/C++ or any other coding language for that matter I am not saying this because I feel that the university has done wrong, I love where I am going to school I think it was more that I didnt understand and I my classes are very fast paced It was not obviuos that they are quit different jobs So again thank you for this video
Comment from : Alan Curson

Richard Baron
This video really helped to clarify things for me I'm a web developer for a good company, but I really can't stand web or ui development I much prefer backend development I've been wanting to get back to game programming after 5+ years away with a friend of mine who is more the artistic type (design, modeling, etc) In fact, I called in sick today just because I didn't want to go to work Thanks for helping me to clarify what I already knew and put it in a better perspective!
Comment from : Richard Baron

I'm studying computer science, but always wanted to be a designer, after a while I found out that if you know how to code properly, getting into game design and really understanding what's possible or not is much easier for you Coding is such a valuable skill, you can't lose anything if you learn it After my bachelor in computer Sc I'm gonna apply for a short term game design program I don't love coding, I know it's not for me but I wanna push through all these mathematics and problems to understand what it really takes to make a game
Comment from : aXoL Niz

HachiDaime
At first you need to learn both, game programming is easy and long process but design is much more difficult, there are a lots of stuff in designingyou need to have good imagination and creativity when it comes to game designingOn the other hand game programming is more like physics and maths, you use real world concepts in your game,u can do a lots of stuff according to wat your game designer wants to have,in simple words they will convert the pen and paper work into reality

This was incredibly insightful and very appreciated!brbrI'm currently looking at going back to school and i've been wracking my brain trying to figure out what kind of programming/developing would best suit mebrbrIf the end goal is to be a game programmer, would you suggest starting in Front-End/App Dev and make the switch to game programming when the times feels right/an opportunity comes along? I have very little knowledge of coding currently, though I have made a basic 2D side-scroller in Unity with C# coding from a tutorial on YoutubebrbrMuch appreciated! Subscribed and will be consuming much more of your content over the next few days!

Nice video! With the popularity of mobile and live service I'd say it's much more valuable for a game designer to come in with a background in Economics and data analysis Being very systems-oriented becomes very important when you're constructing the foundations of a progression system, let alone balancing an entire player economy Poor decision making in the early going is going to have severe ramifications for your live ops and in turn the long-term health of your productbrbrThere's really no such thing as an "ideas person" game designer: every decision needs to be backed up by some kind of data and not solely driven by your whims and desires, or those of your colleagues or even superiors Being a great communicator is key as well, both in terms of selling your design decisions to your team and crystalizing the core tenants of your game so every other discipline is on the exact same page as you are Sadly there's no room for wallflowers in game design and that's coming from someone who is at their core quite reserved and found working as a game designer to be quite stressful indeed A big part of that stress also came from the constant uncertainty of not knowing if the choices I was making were the right ones and needing to wait many months sometimes until those ideas could be proven out And because of this game design can and will haunt you constantly even when you're not at work For some this could be heaven but for others it can become a living nitghtmare

What about combination of programming and design in one job? Say the design more focused on the game mechanics from the technical standpoint

DudeWat
"Gameplay programmer" and "game designer" should be the same role A game designer should code their own gameplay systems It's okay to be a "pure" programmer who only does the interface, the shaders, and the back-end stuff - that's all finebrbrHowever, if you're designing the actual core of the game, you should be the one moving things around in the World Space, doing the character skill trees, programming the AI, and making sure the controls work properlybrbrArmchair game designers are a fucking cancer, especially if they don't have a programming background They should be ousted from the industry

i think learning the fundamentals, databases, programming, networking is the best thing you can do before going into any IT related job, often times the software you are using is not even complete/fully optimized etc so knowing what you are trying to achieve on a lower level can really help a lot For me art and software are like completely different worlds but I could also see a developer having a decent knowledge and skill in art would be very beneficial and vica versa You don't even rlly need to do a course to learn IT fundamentals, its really piss easy if you just watch some videos and read some articles, and documentation once u have a good grasp

Alan Lee
"Learning to code" as a requirement for game designers is stifling the industry I get it Coding games is more involved than ever before But a lot of the revolutionaries like Hideo Kojima didn't really know how to code So as the industry gets more complex, it will continue to devolve and games will become generic call of duty clones designed by committee with no innovation You have to spend a lifetime studying the art and devoting yourself like shigeru miyamoto, hideo kojima, hironobu sakaguchi, john romero, Glenn Schoefieldetc to really make legendary innovative games But being able to do that is probably impossible in this day and age
Comment from : Alan Lee

Sejo
Programming If you lose your job in game programming at least you know how to code and can work for an IT non game dev related job
