Listening to what Brahams created, people may want to consider why God decided to descend and chose his permanent residence among those he created Nothing surprises me when I realize what people create Comment from : Michael Steiner |

As a boy soprano in a Cathedral choir in a major city some 50 years ago used to sing choral excerpts from this usually in English at funerals and the like One chorus from the Brahms that was frequently requested was How Lovely are thy Dwellings Fair which I noted even as a callow lad was deeply moving and comforting (I included it in the music for my father's funeral 20 odd years ago as it was a favourite of his as well as Stainer's 'The Crucifixion' - once equally as popular as the Brahms but now largely forgotten - a pity as it has tremendous choruses) Loved the Brahms as a boy but as an adult tended to listen to orchestral performances rather than choral Most of my concert going has been orchestral as well (excepting the ubiquitous Messiahs ever couple of years at Christmas) Have to admit to having lost myself somewhat in this sublime performance (although with similar reservations over the Bass soloist who is not bad but who suffers in comparison to the spectacular contributions by orchestra, conductor and chorus) Quite a revelation really hearing this in full (Another 'secular' religious work we used to perform back in the day to an enthusiastic response was Beethoven's Christ on the Mount of Olives A scandalously overlooked work these days which also has superb choruses (including a Hallelujah Chorus to rival Handel's famous one) Anyway kudos to the fine musicians and singers from Frankfurt and maestro Zinman for this wonderful, moving performance Comment from : Rick Dorian |

[Portuguese-Br] Obrigado canal do YouTube hr-Sinfonieorchester!!

Comment from : Fernando Emanuel Correia |
|
(piada) Comment from : Fernando Emanuel Correia |

I don't know how true it is, and correct me please if I'm wrong, but I'm sure I read somewhere that this was Karajan's first work after being allowed back in the profession by the Allied Control Commission If memory serves it was in Salzburg in the winter of 1947, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf also on stage I wonder, because I cannot imagine, what the feeling in the theatre was like considering the colossal tragedy that had just befallen Europe Comment from : Michael Greenwood |

My favorite performance! Comment from : Siena |
|
This work, written by an openly atheist composer, proves both an open-minded spiritual attitude (in spite of a crude and harsh aptitude to human relationship) and a form of musical nationalism The contrast between the parts is extreme Listen for instance to the second section while keeping in mind the atmosphere of the first one, or the only intervention of the harp Comment from : Gérard Begni |
|

Wow! David Zinman was the conductor of the Rochester Philharmonic while I was at Eastman circa 1984-1986 and we sang a rehearsal with the RPO of the Cosi fan tutte finale of Act 1 A great experience and a very compelling conductor What an amazing thing to see him here 30+ years later, and to think I sang in the Alte Oper a couple of times as a soloist What a great hall! I first heard this sung at the National Cathedral in Washington, D C in 1970 and was emotionally transported to a different place It made such an impact on me, I made a promise to myself at the time that somehow I would become part of an organization that would perform this incredible piece of music I have a sort of singing "Bucket List" and this was put on that list A few years ago, I was priviliged to be able to sing this with the Virginia Symphony Chorus There is no doubt whatsoever that if I ever have the opportunity to sing this again, I would not hesitate Comment from : Linn Mullin |
