Handel invested in the South Sea Company as well Comment from : Suzanne Tevlin |

So The slavery aspect of the company wasn't actually particularly connected to the crash after all? I wonder why it's not brought up when discussing the crash specifically Dear lord, why, we also don't speak extensively about the fact that they practiced whaling for a while! the horror, clearly that's also relevant? What a silly fixation Comment from : Dexter Dextrow |
|
Nothing has changed, really It's a story a story as old as time Wrist slapping for the guilty and business as usual, for the guilty Crooks are always going to crook There will always be tweaks and differences, yet the core stays the same An excellent lecture Much appreciated Comment from : Yomodojo |

:-( I thought a flat speaker, who made rather a number of assumptions, eg re the role of women came straight out of the feminist book of cliches, and never explained a great deal Alexander Pope told Joseph Spence that he had lost a considerable sum in the crash, but that it was only 'paper money' ie money gained in the initial inflation But it was great to have the illustrations so visible for once, most of these lectures are poorly edited to show only the talking head and miss out the illustrations Comment from : Kelvin Kersey |
|
Rather disappointing Although the lecture explained why the stock was an attractive investment, it did not explain why the market price spiked so high and why it plummeted just as quickly Comment from : Kevynuk |
|
I thought this was a lecture about the south sea bubble Not a lecture about whether or not the south sea company practice slavery That's a fine subject for a video, just name the video "slavery in the South Sea bubble" so people don't think they're going to get a general history of the South Sea bubble I learned almost nothing about the south sea bubble But I did learn that there's definitive proof that the South Sea company practice slavery You should retitle this video Comment from : MattCellaneous |

These lectures are so cool Comment from : Coastwalker |

Hey Thomas Gresham is my great^7 grandfather No joke Why didn't I get to go here for free? Comment from : Nic Gresham |

Wonderful talk! Debunking the “madness” theory, bringing in the long-neglected slavery business, connecting the SSB with the war debts, discussing the connection between the SSC and the Mississippi company, and John Law’s parallel operations, also for war debt, in France, in one talk less than an hour long, is a remarkable summary Comment from : Gustav Derkits |

Britain should have grabbed the Southern Cone (present-day Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay) by the 1710s after the Treaty of Utrecht and transformed these areas into a settler colony like the US, Canada, Australia, or NZ The reason the South Sea Bubble burst in the first place was that Britain never controlled the Río de la Plata region that would have been the center of the South Sea Company Comment from : Joseph Solis Alcayde Alberici |
