Goldie! You are my last hope! Why do we as dancers accept that we have to side hustle, while we are breaking our backs dancing for free? The stipend of a hundred bucks or so at the end of the week, in my opinion doesn't count because it has no relation to hours worked If a company is making profit off our labour power, why in the hell are we not compensated like every other job? We need to stop accepting this For a thought experiment imagine a person works eight hours a day, seven days a week at an Amazon distribution center, and at the end of the week that person receives no paycheck or Amazon being benevolent hands out $250 - and this person thinks to herself/himself - " Well, this is perfectly fine because I do it for the love of the work Never mind how I will eat, pay rent, handle insurance, medical bills, etc I will get another job that pays for the essentials to live in America " No one says this! Is it fundamentally different than working in a professional dance company? You sign a contract You are required to show up at a particular time wherein you exercise your body and brain to execute what is required of you If you don't you are fired It is a job my friends! The professional company is stealing the dancers' labour time Full stop Dancers have trained so hard throughout their whole lives they are willing to accept just about anything in order to dance on stage ( in no way am I excluding myself from this mindset ) Companies are very well aware of this so they take full advantage Hey! Why wouldn't they? It's great for the company! And there is an implicit understanding that the dancer is not to say anything lest they want to be sent packing - PAYING to audition around the country for another company This has gone on for so long it has become accepted reality We, as dancers need to gain the strength to say NO!
