I think your step number 2, choosing the right supervisor, is by far the most important In Japanese martial arts we say you should invest at least 3 years to find your sensei; the PhD is not quite the same thing but still The PhD is an apprenticeship in research and you are going to be this person’s apprentice for a number of years You need to find a competent scholar, you need to admire and trust this person, but it must also be someone with whom you get along well, and who can bring out your best talents I always tell my students that finding the right supervisor is one of the most important decisions for the success of their PhD and for their happiness while doing it Comment from : Frank Stajano Explains |

Hi Simon, I really enjoy your videos Have you heard of the term 'Integrated Master of Engineering' before?brbrIt's what you get when you graduate from Polytechnic universities here in Greece It's a 5 year curriculum that (supposedly) has got Master's Degree equivalency and you do actually complete a master level thesis to finish your studies I'm not sure that many people bknow exactly/b that this is supposed to be a 3-year barchelor and a 2-year masters-like study plan glued together This is what I'm currently enrolled in (computer engineering and informatics) The thesis that I see presented on my department are more like a smaller dissertation than an actual thesis though What's your opinion on this? So how is it you decide what you will look into and what “original” research you are doing, for example, if I was interested in Gravitational waves, I would do something about interferometers, but how would I go into the subject and think of original research I could conduct or, like you said, show why something was wrong (Michelson-Morley interferometer) but there have surely been multiple studies or “theses” conducting the same research lol Comment from : Subhan Din |

Hello, I really really want to be accepted into a PhD program and start doing some meaningful work But the process of getting accepted, especially for a fully-funded PhD (also in UK) is giving me the chills! It is not like in my masters' application where I applied and got accepted only because I wanted to, I actually have to be accepted by THEM! So I have some questions regarding the application process and I really hope Simon or anyone with experience can guide me through these:brbrbr1 I am having trouble understanding what are all these titles Research Domain, Research Topic, Research Field, Research Idea and List of Themes What is the difference between all these and can you give me some examples as well please?brbrbr2 I am confused when they provide in the course description a list of themes Is that list for me to choose my idea of project to research? This PhD system really lacks a structure on what to do 1st, 2nd 3rd, etc!brbrbr3 Can I apply and have a topic allocated for me directly for after I finish applying?brbrbr4 What should I include in my Project Proposal?brbrbr5 When choosing a supervisor, is it necessary to have studied a course similar to their speciality in order to get accepted by them?brbrbrThese are all my questions ANYBODY who knows the answers, please comment below! Thank you very much! Comment from : IStandAlone Roronoa Zoro |

The education labeling strata is part of the long established economic-social control machine established by the British Empire Employment gates based on submission to system demands, not actual intelligence, creativity or genius Would Einstein or Gates be any more or less intelligent or privileged with or without a PhD? I like what James Hayton says about a PhD A PhD is structured very differently to other courses and is meant to prepare you for a career in academia So, "[i]nstead of thinking of a PhD as the pinnacle of the education system, it's better to think of it as the bottom layer of the professional academic system" - James Hayton, author of 'PhD - an uncommon guide to research, writing & PhD life' Comment from : Misha Purser |

There's also another way: PhD by published works Only a few places offer this route but it is particularly suited to those who might already have many research publications under their belt but never did a PhD brbrAfter the PhD there's the Higher Doctorate after the 'junior doctorate' (in your case, it would be a DSc), though not many people know about or bother to supplicate for them, even when they have become world leading experts in their field and have many publications under their belt which is the main criteria for being admitted to such degrees Comment from : CharlieHuang |

|
So I have a MSci degree and its an absolutely scraped 21 The problem I'm having is everyone I seem to talk to about doing a phd seems to say chances aren't great (I know this already) but the way it is said makes it sound like a miracle brSo I did very badly in my final year from a mixture of things, bad circumstances, bad headspace leading to bad quality of work and motivation The project I did seemed interesting at first but turned out to be quite different to what I expected My average in the final year is like 10 lower than my other years and I even failed a couple of exams ie my transcript is awful brSo as a lot of people say to speak about the final year project its quite difficult in my case brAlso to top it off I have done no research experience or internships and the applications need to be sent in roughly 2 months brbrI plan to use 1 month for reading and learning about the field (as I want to transfer fields) it makes it more challenging given I want to do theory and they are usually a lot more competitive brI havent found or heard anyone with similar circumstances as me who have been a successful applicant so I guess I'm just reaching into the void out of desperation and hoping for some guidance on what I can do brbrThank you for any help provided Comment from : Mujib Miah |
