I find it amazing in these discussions, it’s always just assumed that the parents are going to pay 100 of the college expenses of their kids We always saw that as irresponsible

We have a Junior in a State College and a HS Senior Our boys know they are responsible for 20 of college They can go in-state, private or out of state They learn quickly which to choose!brOur college student used scholarships to pay for 80 of his college So glad we have a younger one to use up the funds in his 529 fund

If you want them to stay in a dorm with a meal plan at a 4 year you will need at least $100k in the 529

I think what puts my mind at ease about over funding 529's is that they can be passed down to the eventual grandkids if the kids don't use it all I also hope for the opportunity to one day reward my kids, using 529 money, for getting scholarships Would love a new car purchase for my kids coming out of a 529 plan!!

I read that you can even use the 529 plan to pay for your child’s laptop and WiFi costs There are many ways to leverage this money - I’m a big fan, especially since my children might attend private elementary schools for a few years

Thanks to the Trump Administration you can now use the 529 for high school tuition which I have had to do since the public schools went sideways

This is a difficult decision with many unknown variables At least it’s flexible if you overshoot Some states have alternate plans like Michigan Education Trust that pays 4 years of tuition at public universities in MI
