I taught myself a second language (my 1st is English) and have been gradually expanding my use of it and I have found that it has also expanded my mind I don't think radically differently, but enough to notice it and I feel that my overall acumen is enhanced So, I think he missed the boat on that one His second point is absolutely true that you can "become" part of the target culture and enjoy the many benefits that accrue from that understanding Yes, it is a lot of fun to speak another language Comment from : Warren Berckmann |

I’m trying to be quadrilingual I’m in the Philippines and speak English and Tagalog I learned Spanish from my late mother, but neglected it when I moved away, and have to give it some serious review Now I’m learning Korean because our company was bought by a Korean conglomerate It’s not required, and the Korean executives are taking English and Tagalog classes But I was impressed that they are making the effort, and would like to meet them halfway It’s a huge challenge, especially since I’m already in my late 50s, but I find that having already been multilingual makes learning another language easier This might not be as true if you’re bilingual but both languages are structurally similar (eg, Spanish and Italian) But English, Tagalog, and Spanish have very different grammars, so the concept of differing word orders that he cited, which is one of the more challenging aspects of learning a language, is something I’m already used to For another of the very challenging aspects, pronunciation, I have the multitude of videos on the Internet to thank for helping with 🙂 Comment from : Joey Indolos |

I am fluently in three languages, and one of the most enjoyable experiences is when people speak about you, assuming you don't understand their language, while in reality, you understand every single thing they are saying😊 Comment from : M |

I agree with Mr McWhorter about his reasons of what we leand a new language, specially about his second and third reasons that he said: " if you speak two languages, dementia is lees likely to set in, and that you are probably a better multitasker and languages are just an waful lot of fun" another type of great information as important as another type of subjects - such as the world of mathematics or the world of science - that serve us for the contiguous challenges we face, daily An example would be, if we did not know how to face a conversation with people who do not speak our language - identify their gestures, their intentions -, we could not relate to them because it would make us the tool of language Also, if we relate to other people, the person is happier and has fun We MUST learn a new Language!!!brbrby Francisca Comment from : Patocalvo |
Mr Mcwhorter said that they were tickets to being able to participate in the culture of the people who speak them And I agree with this
brAlso, it is a practice that is beneficial for health, because Mr Mc Whorter said that If we spoke two languages, this could have a positive impact in reducing the possibility of dementia With these two reasons I agree with him
br Also, because I love learning new languages, even though I'm not that good at speaking English, but I really like it And I would like to learn French, Japanese and Greek very well brBesides, language is part of a culture In fact, languages are mutating as the years go by and cultural movements and cultural syncretism that is increasing due to migration But, if we want to preserve the native languages, it is important to generate strategies and policies that allow these languages to be preserved as part of the culture of a country, generating access to this knowledge and also the protection of these languages Comment from : Benjamín Inostroza |
I agree The way wich we could use to blow our brain is know new languages The video has been quite interesting and funny Comment from : Mauricio Ortega |

As John addresses in this video, I totally agree about the importance of learning new languages and how technology has given us a unique opportunity to improve our skills from everywhere we could be at the time Besides that, in my experience it has been the only way I could take the chance of doing something I couldn't do it in some other way Another highlight I can take from John is the relevance of learning new languages in order to imbibe the culture I have a friend who showed me how learning languages could open doors in so many ways In fact, I saw him growing up in his job and getting new opportunities just because of this He is a guy whose appetite for learning has taken him further than many of our colleagues at this time I'm sure that he had not being able to get through this, if he hadn't had taken english classes or if he hadn't noticed the important of going further than you had already known For me, my friend's experience is another reason to agree with John's opinion in terms of the importance of learning new languages Also besides all I said before, I totally agree with how much fun it's the process of learning new languages, and in my case, the english language specifically Comment from : Nicolás Labarrera |

The content expressed by MrMcWhorter have many interesting topics focus on learn a new language and in my way of thinking it´s a wonderful way to connect with people who have a different cultures Actually you can understand further how it works some things in other countries I´m a Spanish native person and I´ve seen some improvements in my capacities while I´m learning a new language like do more things at the same time also I´m getting more sensitive when I read or when I´m talking with people The tools wich you apply in your daily live are stronger when you are learning a new language Comment from : Jocsan Herrera Matus |

I am Venezuelan, but I have lived in Santiago de Chile since 2017 I agree that technology helps in a good way to improve my level of English and improve people's lives I use daily visual and auditory material on the Internet to improve my understanding of English and in the comfort of my home, which has led me to have job opportunities and conversations never thought of in the past by me Comment from : Wilson Riquelme |
I agree with Mr McWhorter in the first argument when he said that if you want to imbibe in some culture, if you really want to feel it, you have to control some degree of the language of that culture, because how will you learn about them if you can’t talk with them? I think the culture is born from the interaction of someone with others and if you can't talk with others, the culture isn't being transmitted And I liked when he said who learn a new language will have less probability to have dementia, and is true, my great-grandmother was having problem with his brain and her doctor told him to learn a new language can be a solution for her problem and during the time that she was learning german, she began to have better results in her exams Very good ted’s talk Comment from : Martin Valenzuela |
I like the video and the reasons for learn new languages brI agree with the reason that learn languages is fun, because you can sing in other language, listen to music, watch movies; activities that feel like a hobby brAnd the reason that the languages is part of the culture is true, because say a lot the sociaty is: if the people is more cold/serious or happy Comment from : camila peralta |
It was interesting, when you started to study a new language its always more neutral, but when you improve it, it is time to get more close to some particular culture and start speaking more colloquial and with slang and even a different accent, and actually learn about those different cultures Even with your own language Comment from : Sebastián Alvarado |

Learning any new language has always been very useful It gives you new job opportunities, one feels fulfilled , cultures and idioms are learned Speaking English is already an official language in many parts of the world and allows you to communicate with different people Comment from : Horacio Maino Mujica |
It’s funny because it’s totally true At the moment I’m learning other two languages (English and italian) that are not my native tongue (Spanish) and the particularities that another language has makes them so special, today they come to us in an easy way thanks to technology and greatly increase our knowledge of the world which it would be a pity not to take advantage of the benefits of our timebrAnd the best part of this incredible reflection was as he said if you spoke two languages dementia was less likely to set in Bilingualism is healthy, is amazing how our brain can change and our perception can changebrIt was a very good reflection Comment from : Valeria Sandoval |
I am from Peru and I speak Spanish, for a few months I set myself the goal of being able to speak English fluently to meet professional goals, watching this video has completely changed my goal of learning this language and continuing to learn others too I found the health benefits you can get from learning and speaking two or more languages very interesting Finally, it also seemed so important to me that the fact of learning another language involves learning and understanding about the different cultures of other people This is my favorite phrase from the video (The language channels the culture) Comment from : Alejandra Cabrera Pérez |
I’m from Chile and I love English language since I can remember I was really annoying so my mom made me watch movies like “Grease” over and over in English and without subtitle (I was a 3 years old kid so I wasn’t able to read 😅); and my dad loves music so I grew up listening to Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley, Madonna, The Beatles, Queen, Aerosmith, etc, etc So when I was in school that language was always easy for me It is everywhere brbrI think people want to learn it to have more job opportunities nowadays For me is because I always loved it and made me fell in love with others languages and want to learn them because I want to experience what John said at the end: blow my mind Comment from : Pía Riveros |
i'm native in spanish particulary chilean spanish, a complex and rare derivation of spanish, with a lot of new wordsbrand new ways to speak them, different meaning for same word, depends the tone that you use when you speak can be bra nice word or a word to start to fightbrnow i'm trying to learn new languajes, i can read and write in english (i think) but try to speak in a country where brthe people don't try to learn new languajesbr it's dificult to put in practise and this is the principal problembrto learn new languajes in LATAM for examplebri think that the best way to test your skills is in a travel and live 24 hours using the languaje skills that your learned in this new languaje i think that it's give's you a lot of confidence and fluence in a short timebrbrbrregards to all! Comment from : matias rojas |
I liked this video and I agree with Mr McWhorter about English is the world’s universal language so it’s important to learn it brI believe that speaking another language permit grow up, open your mind and know the world and the people whose live in theirbrIn my personal experiences learning english had been difficult, especially talking with another person, but I know that is not impossible, so I won't give up Comment from : Catalina Morales |
stunning!!!!! definitely one of the best talks I've ever heard John said in the video that if you speak 2 lenguages dementia was less likely to set in, pretty interesting, I'm probably gonna be searching for more information abaut that after whatching this video i end up seeing like 10 more related to this topic I'm a native spanish speaker, and if i had never learned english, I'm sure i would have been five times less smarter than I am today, being able to speak english had led me to masive amounts of information (like this video) that if i had never known English, i wouldn't be able to understand no wonder this video has been seen by 17 millions of people, its fantastic thanks to the person who uploaded this to the internet Comment from : Scraxsg |
I would add a first condition to these 4 reasons to learn another language As a non native english speaker, learning english for me is more a necessity rather than a hobby As the presenter said, English is the language of globalizationbrbrin fact, it can be beneficial to learn other languages instead of english, not only to socialize with other cultures, but also to train the mind Comment from : Camila Francisca Manques Macuada |

I speak English as my native language I'm fluent in French, having been born in Brussels and lived there for 18 years I am native level in Spanish, because I have lived in Spain for 25 years and my wife is Spanish I have self taught myself Polish, and I am now learning Japanese Language learning is one of the best things a human being can do for himself It's hard, it takes a lot of time, but if you enjoy the process it can be so much fun! Comment from : Christopher Fleming |
Well I wanna learn a new language but I really don't care about the reasons mentioned, it makes me feel like I'm wasting my time learning a new language Comment from : MrJlad |
As I see it, learning a new language is quite difficult and so time consuming I really admire people who master different languages and study them at the same time In my case, I’m just looking for learning and improving my English
brAs John mentioned in this video, nowadays it is easier to learn anything thanks to internet I think internet has given us the possibility to have limitless resources with just one click So, it’s up to us taking advantage of these resources and applied them wisely to get the best out of them
brI always wanted to learn English, but for different reasons I never had the discipline to do it However, a year ago I promised myself to do it once and for all! I’m not going to lie; Learning English has been one of the most challenging things I’ve ever faced Even though it’s been overwhelming and frustrating, I’d say it has been extremely rewarding I still have a long way to go, but I’m sure I’ll reach a good level of English There are a lot of things I have to learn, but I am committed to do it Comment from : Juan Domínguez Riquelme |

Hi people, this is a very good and motivational video to encourage you to learn other languages rather than English My native language is Spanish and right now I´m trying to learn English only because as John mention in the beginning of the video is the most common language spoken around the globe But is very interesting if you want to learn a little bit more about other culture try to learn some words or to understand the grammar And also if you want to learn other language, probably the time is the best because through technology you can easily learn in the comfort of your bedroom or Livingroom, you can pay for a online course or just ear videos with English subtitles without pay anything Comment from : Daniel Fuentes Olivera |
My native language is Spanish, but I need to learn English to be a bilingual person I think that learning English is very important to open my mind and get to know other cultures better It is true that if you know how to speak English you can communicate almost anywhere in the world and it is also very important for many areas of life, as it is a great tool when doing business, traveling and when looking for a good job I didn´t know that learning other languages was a great way to fight dementia and this makes it more interesting for me Comment from : Josefa Fernández |
My native language is Spanish and now I am trying to learn English, slowly and steadily achieving it The experience of learning has been difficult, frustrating but totally amusing, and at some times chaotic because I have to deal with my own frustration whenever something appears that I can't understand Still, in the end, it’s too much fun and comforting when I start to realize that I’m getting it In the end, speaking another language is a constant self-challenge, the important thing is to try to have fun in the process, so that the whole process becomes less difficult and more enjoyable- Comment from : Soraya Santibañez |

I recommend McWhorter to see the Ted-ed lecture of Kelly McGonigal In opposite of what McWhorter says, she actually gives some interesting examples of point of view or mind skills which depends on the specific language which the speaker has I especially liked the example of the language that doesn't contain words for right or left, and its speakers know from their childhood to identify their location in terms of North, South, East and West It was nothing less than mind blowing Comment from : אביתר גלצר |
