Dad was a bank manager in the bush at the time and they (the banks) received the new currency a few days early He gave me a dollar note (no doubt against the rules) and I was the most popular kid in the school showing the other kids the note a few days before changeover

It is smart to change and Australia made the right move Funny how people laugh when us here in America cling to English units like pounds, feet etc yes we have metric side by side if needed So the saying is we have English measurements but metric type system for money since it is based on 10 While England has metric measurements but a wacky monetary counting system

I was 10 years old and I remember my Uncle who came around to my parents place and showed us the new coins and dollar notes brAs a kid I struggled with Pounds and pence and foot and inches, but with the new decimal currency and decimal measurements, it was so much easier, everything was in 10

What a lot of people forget is that there was some serious shopping basket inflation during the change A shilling was 12 Pence and so with (for example) Apples being a Penny each you got 12 apples for a shilling When the change came they gave you a 10 cent piece for your shilling, Apples stayed the same price, 1 cent each, but now you only got 10 for the "shilling"
