|
The reason the three-cent coin was introduced was at the same time, Congress reduced the price of mailing a letter from five cents to three That caused a problem: with the price of a postage stamp at five cents, you would just put down a small half dime; but at the new price, people would have to put down three rather large pennies Back in 1851, the penny was four times larger than the pennies we have today, and just as expensive to make; so Congress alleviated this problem with a three-cent coin that was as small as a half dime Comment from : kenmograd2009 |
|
1865 is by far the most common 3 cent nickel date Rick's is only in VG condition You can buy a better coin on eBay for $10 including shipping Rick doesn't know coin prices Comment from : brushcreek42 |

Yeah, these odd-ball coins are called silver 3-cent pieces, or nickel 3-cent pieces Referring to the coin as a "3-cent nickel" sounds like a nickel (5-cent coin) that's being valued at 3 cents, based on metal value (damaged) That's really a bad, confusing term to adopt The show should make a correction to avoid propagating the error
Comment from : Oahu Hawaii |
|
Face value: 50 cents
Metal value: consult sites such as PCGS, Coinflation, XE, etc for metal compostion, bullion metal spot prices
Numismatic value: consult sites such as PCGS, NGC, etc or visit coin shop
Comment from : Oahu Hawaii |
|
The US Mint doesn't produce "pennies" -- they're "1-cent" pieces or coins "Pennies" were made in the UK
There's no such thing as a 1985-D Kennedy penny or 1-cent piece The US 1-cent coin design, from 1909 to today (2013), uses a portrait of Lincoln on its obverse The "D" under the date means the coin was made at the Denver Mint
FYI: 1809-Lincoln born;
1909-new design w/ "wheat" reverse;
1959-new reverse w/ Lincoln Memorial;
2009-four new reverse designs;
2010-"shield" reverse design
Comment from : Oahu Hawaii |
|
Maybe you should call them and ask Comment from : LostTranslation85 |
|
In the past, 5-cent pieces were called half-dimes When the mint changed the metal composition from Ag-Cu to Cu-Ni, people started calling the coin a nickel because its color is unlike 10/25/50-cent pieces and older half-dimes BTW, "nickel" is only an informal term, and the coin isn't stamped with the word "nickel" on any side (or edge) of the coin The coin is more Cu than Ni (75-25), but its faux silver appearance misleads many people now to think it's mostly nickel, or even silver (0) Comment from : Oahu Hawaii |
|
Officially, the US uses 1-cent coins, not pennies The founders of the US made an effort to avoid calling the coin a penny because they didn't want to adopt the British system [Funny how we're stuck with the English inch/feet/mile units, and not metric]

|
