I favour Daiwa In South Africa Shimano is ridiculously expensive compared to Daiwa Penn on the other hand is like a Harley too fat Comment from : Dr Evil |
+1 I believe is the anti reverse bearing Comment from : Joe Kassay |
I always liked brass gears they are strong and last Comment from : Melvin |
I also like a pinion supported with a bearings such as Lews uses and the Lews inshore you should have reviewed Comment from : Melvin |
You know the problem everyone's bearing problems , It's simple just use totally sealed bearings but people are too cheap to put them in So when I get new reels, I put totally sealed bearings in them and I never have no problems Never have to lubricate him because they're totally sealed, build and nothing ever gets in them Comment from : Melvin |
I plan on buying 1 Penn reel and 1 Diawa bg Comment from : Melvin |
a stradic at a sale price of 159 with free shipping imo is the best you can do out of these three Though I do want a small spinfisher or slammer Comment from : bcp5296d |
from what ive understood the plus 1 stands for the anti reverse bearing thats why they all pretty much have it Comment from : Dragster Mike |
If i was reeling in fish more often than my lure, I'd choose daiwa, otherwise shimano Comment from : Rory ODonnell |
What gear oil do you use or recommend Comment from : Chris Magory |
Because only Penn, Shimano and Daiwa make fishing reels Aren't you doing your visitors something of a disservice by ignoring EVERY OTHER brand of fishing reel available to them? Comment from : chuckschilling |
+1 just for antireverse bearing instead of roller Comment from : Tomas Janicek |
Question!! Can I remove my penn level wing casting reel with a penn fierce4 spinning reel?? Comment from : Michael Dow |
any mechanical device you use for hobbies need a maintenance program, moving parts wear out, if you maintain things they'll last you your life time, and in reality its part of the fun, but if you have money to burn buy a new one, if not make maintenance part of the fun Comment from : Owen Bell |
Have 5 stradic have never been disappointed, and not had problems with the line roller bearings, and the new 3000, I think is assume, keep getting better Comment from : Stephen Colantonio |
Thank you very much, is 👍, but I only love shimano reels Comment from : user 1962 |

does anyone know if I can replace my Penn spinfisher 6 6500 spool with a 6500 longcast spool Comment from : American Patriot |
Considering its all Daiwa boxes behind him I am going to assume the final choice will be DAIWA overall lol Comment from : BJJ and BS |
Plus one refers to to the anti-reverse bearing Comment from : Alucard Hellsing |

Shimano Ultegra enters room at $50 cheaper Comment from : James Stewart |
Shimano stradic and penn clash 2 are my favorite I’ve never been impressed by Daiwa Comment from : Dawson Fayard |
How do I buy this Comment from : Abdulkadir Ozkan |
Excellent video thank you Comment from : Eric Corse |
Hi great info, how ever Daiwa has to realize that anglers need to service themselves their reels regardless of pricing Daiwa will loose customers due to their mag seal technology as well as NOT SELLING or making it possible to customers to be able to buy special tools and supply for all their mag sealed reels I purchased Daiwa Saltiga 20000 size significantly expensive but returned when I learned the Hassel with non self service ability Went with Shimano Stella instead Daiwa needs to learn that its us consumers as Angler that support manufactures product with our hard earned money It is very undemocratic to force consumer to not having choice when it goes to maintenance Comment from : m-reza abazar-Ghafari |
KastKing Kapstan Elite 3000-size, IPX6 waterproof rated, all-aluminum construction except the rotor, 30# of drag, and only $12999 Comment from : LI Archer |
I really appreciate the IP ratings I hope all reel manufacturers go to that system Great video, you guys are awesome! I just bought a stratic I can't wait until the spring comes around to use it Comment from : Carrie P |
I have a spin Fisher 6500 ll from about 6 or 8 years ago or more I got it because a neighbor didn't want to replace the pinion gear I was 90 sure it has a zinc main gear I remember thinking it would be great if it were stainless like the next line up Comment from : Eric Stone |
Shimano all day by far Comment from : arturo capone |
Stradic not a SW reel! br Better comparison would be Spheros 5000 SW Comment from : Brian Christy |
Great video 👍 Comment from : Truck |
Nice video guys I appreciate you all showing the different manufacturers at this price point This video is a good example of what I'd like to see more of in your product reviews Unfortunately, the majority of the Salt Strong product reviews being made now seem like they're pushing the gear you guys sell in your store In my opinion, if you guys don't review and recommend more products that aren't in your store - I feel I can't really trust the advice from you guys on which products to buy Show us the bad stuff too If something is junktell us, make fun of it, laugh about it, and send feedback to the manufacturerbrbrAlso, it would be nice to have another video like this one at the $100-$130 range A lot of us like to stick to that range for our second or third reels, or as a primary if we're on a budgetbrbrbrbrI really like most of the videos you guys make, just wanted to provide some feedback Comment from : Dorsey |

Which one most durable when being dropped or knocked around in a boat on rough seas Comment from : Nathaniel Bourque |
ANTI REVERSE BEARING is the +1 Comment from : Michael Chapman |
Should have used the penn clash or penn conflict 2 Comment from : Carson Anderson |
Is 5000 or 6000 for east coast surf Comment from : Darren Nicholas |
I just managed to destroy my bg reel trying to fight some over torqued screws in order to clean out sand and salt after letting my niece fish with it in OBX surf 🙂 From what I understand there is nothing drastically different in ballistic and saltist mq takedown So not sure what is difficult in servicing them What am I missing other than over torqued screws? Although this time around I am checking on them before I start using the reel Most important screws are bearing retainer screws Otherwise worst case you can still wash out gears from the side window and apply new grease, although not very clean or convent way (I should have done this instead of breaking a screw and ruining the body trying to drill it out) Comment from : KoShu Fun Works Unlimited :-) |
I’ve worked part time for a long time now at a local tackle shop My main function is servicing/repairing reels All I will say is buy a Shimano Comment from : FlukeAllDay |
What would you recommend for fishing off the boat in Alaska? Spinning reel Halibut and Lingcod from 20 - 160 lbs I just purchased a Penn Battle 3 5000 with 40lb Braided line is that good are bad just asking Comment from : ulysses bullock |
The Penn will most likely outlast them all Durable and simple, easy maintenance and available parts Precision CNC machined geartrains and not 'just aluminum', but high-grade strong corrosion resistant aluminum I do love my Stratics smoothness, but they won't take the abuse and corrosive environment long term like a Penn They are salt strong, Justin Comment from : strayed cat |
Curious why did you leave out st croix? Comment from : Jane C |
You talked highly of the material of this fishing reels! Why don’t you do some stress test like put all tree in to salt water or fresh for weeks and reel in a 50# weights for several yards etc and see which one is bulletproof of all 3 Comment from : Rudeman 1 |
Is Shimano 3000 fl is of same size as Daiwa BG 3000/MQnot in line capacity but looking at its overall body size? Comment from : Aroshan Rai |
Late to the party but the "regular"/ long cast spin fisher are sealed higher than ipx 5 but penn didn't want to confuse people having the bait runner version at 5 Comment from : keevisgoat |
IPX rating is non relevant in a product with outside moving parts Stationary things like electronics is valid, something with a handle in it, goes out the window A rubber seal when it moves let’s water in, reason vaanstal use 2 rubber seals Daiwa works best but it needs to be serviced atleast once a year, Shimano doesn’t work all that well, hydrophobic coatings haven’t worked in any of the Shimano that I own, I like the fact I can service them Dust destroys the coating Comment from : T |
Must laugh, the plus 1 bearing is the anti reverse bearing Comment from : T |
MQ because it rhymes with one of my favorite foods -- Bar-B-Q! But seriously, it is the best reel out of the bunch and Stradic is a close second! Comment from : Truth Sower |
I change the gears in my stradic for the ones of the stella and its good Comment from : Joaquim Araujo |
Daiwa-bias Comment from : Pete Cardona |
i had a battle 3 dx 2500 that just couldn't spool right and kept making knots in the spool I would have to take the spool off a few times a day and that would fix it temporarily My tackle shop took it back on warranty and I upgraded to the clash II But once it was spooled reeling it a lure was not smooth and a little grindy The drag system and spooling line on the clash II are awesome They took that back too and now I have the 2500 BG MQ and so far its awesome I have a battle 3 dx 4000 and its great Long story longer Ive had many penn's spin fisher 5's, battle III, and clash II, even the 200 squall bait caster When they are great out of the box they are awesome, but so far in my experience their inshore reels are like 50 good Quality control just isn't there If that clash II was smooth, it would be my favorite reel Comment from : bobbyd41c |
CNC gear, (yeah just aluminum, nothing special)brBro do you understand anything of what you just said?brCNC is a machining process in which a machine cuts a part to exact measurements dictated by a computerbrThere is no machining process more exact and precise than CNC Comment from : Aco |
Bud, you need to do more research before you make a video like this Way to much misinformation Comment from : Aco |
The clash would be a better choice for comparison IMO Comment from : Khoa Tran |
For mechanical wise MQ vs none MQ , shimano stradic 5000xg vs certate 5000d chx , the torque almost the same if not abit better with stradic fl although the main gear drive of daiwa is relatively bigger , locomotive mechanism is not adding any support to the overall torque that what i guess n i could be wrong I have them both amony many reels , stradic fl is just a bit better for castibility n i do cast good enough MQ body + longer spool along with worm gear osc would make any regular spinning reel shines among any company there is , yet the closest is stella fk 2022 Comment from : Maasai |
takes forever to get to the point wtf Comment from : krazy bzs |
I own the stradic and spinfisher I like spinfisher but I love the Stradic FL Comment from : Wicced |

Penn pursuit 2500 and 3000 has been right for me LoL Dollar for dollar they are hard to beat Caught several snook, reds, flounder tons of gator trout, giant ladyfish, jacks, blue's on them since I bought them last year I just haven't had good luck with higher end reels over 100$! 🤷 Comment from : davidsanders81 |
Just wanted to drop you guys a line, and tell you how impressed I am with your content I fish in the north east, and I happen to own all 3 of these reels A couple in different sizes, and I have to say, you are spot on My favorite out of the three is my BG MQ I use the Stradic 3000 for fresh water, a Penn IV for chunking, and a 6000 size MQ for a little of everything The Daiwa is truly special It has way more power than the other 2 When I canal fish the MQ is the best tool I always feel like it has very strong, but effortless power It’s rock solid It would be nice to crack it open, but you make a great point If it’s engineered right, frequent service should not be an issue Thank you for your honesty, and very thorough review I just subscribed, and looking forward to checking out your library Comment from : Tommy S |
would have like to seen the clash 2 in there for penn off the yak I've dunked it and it still feels super smooth hands down my certate is my favorite would trade all 3 for one more of those I have not dunked it yet though there may be a day we shall see! Comment from : rod_in_the_reel |
Great video! Comment from : Edward Branch |
Thanks for this informative video I haven’t bought a newer reel in 20 years My reels are cheaper 1970ish reels I’ve bought with old lures They don’t last so I just pitch them I need to bite the bullet & buy a good reel Thanks for your advice Comment from : Randy Runey |
The Penn Spinning reels They have a conversion kit for them to make them a Bayless system And penn reels are straight up salt water reels And they are US made Comment from : Corey Arendt |
Vanford No question Comment from : JD Leslie |
I have used all 3, and I have to admit none are perfect but the Vanford and Stradic better for mecasting distance and weight are driving facture All are good and much better than what I was using 10 years ago Just my 2 cents Comment from : Clay Jones |
As I understand the Daiwa has that plate on the bottom and once you take that off you will notice water can easily get in through there if soaked in water or am I wrong? Also as far as the Spinfisher it gets smoother with time as the excess grease starts to loosen up with use With other brands, the smoothness goes away with time Comment from : Adrian Molina |
+1 is the anti reverse roller bearing Comment from : Tony Bishop |
Daiwa failed with that reel when they left a cast zinc main gear instead of putting one of the aluminum ones in it There really isn't a better built 200 spinning reel than the FL If you want a Daiwa with a gear worthy of the 200ish dollar price point the Back Bay and the Ballistic both fill that roll Comment from : None |
Penn Clash II is the better comparison in this price point A little less sealed than the Spinfisher & a couple more bearings For my $, that's my choice Comment from : Julian Stolz |
Wonderful comparison, thank you so much for explaining differences between them Comment from : Gary Wood |
Quite happy with my Stradics! Comment from : Andi Zgarta |
Awesome overview Justin - nice video and great information Comment from : Pablo Diaz |
I’d like to see a saltwater baitcaster review This season, I’ve really gotten into throwing swimbaits in saltwater on baitcasters Comment from : Aaron Higgs |
Great breakdown I have all these reals and I’ll take my Daiwa BGMQ all day It’s a tank It’s smooth like the stradic , and tough like the spinfisher The bushing in the line roller for the BG is preferable to me I’ve replaced TOO many line roller bearings from shimano, especially in the ci4 There’s a reason the vanford has a bushing now Comment from : Aaron Higgs |
Shimano all day for me Comment from : Cal Allen |
Shimano is King of reels! Comment from : Henrik Sjölund |
Fun review I have a bunch of Shimano Stradic’s (1000 & 2000 size Ci4 and F models) and a couple of 2000 size Shimano Vanfords too All used primarily in freshwater but catching 1,000’s of smallmouth and largemouth Bass A few weeks each year some are used in saltwater For some reason, I prefer the Stradic over a Vanford but can’t even really say why! I do think a Vanford reel is better in saltwater but not surebrbrMy priorities are Smoothness (I have to “feel” everything the lure is doing), Lightweight (more cast equal more fish so you have to avoid fatigue), Consistency (my 8-year Old Ci4 reels feel brand new still) and Customer Service I pack my most used Shimano reels and send to Shimano once each year They are expertly cleaned and any necessary parts are replaced free of charge I find it interesting when the Shimano repairman will call to report on what parts he recommends replacing All free which is nice I was told they use three different lubricants (grease and oils) so they say I do “surface” lubricant my reels during the year I do not tear them downbrbrPenn and Diawa make great gear I just find comparable Penn gear heavier, less refined and not smooth or crisp Early on I had several Diawa failures but betting they are great nowadays If I was stuck on a lifeboat in the middle of the ocean, I would choose a Penn reel as I just feel they are bulletproof In the meantime, I’ll stick with ShimanobrbrBe wellbrLife is Good Comment from : Muskietime |
You should include the Daiwa saltist back bay 3000 Comment from : Salty Lawaia |
All I have are spinfisher and saragosas in my collection I’ve been thinking about getting a Stradic 3000 maybe for sheepshead and sabiki Comment from : Joey Lopez |
Stradic is King! Comment from : ryan helou |
Plus 1 is an anti reverse bearing Comment from : The Loose Moose |
I have the Shimano Vanford that's my go to reel Comment from : Light Tackle Enthusiast |
Love my stradics! Still have one with the wooden handle knob lol Comment from : ChasinTailTampaBay |
Mq kills it and it’s not even close Comment from : Jay Zhou |
I love this comparison! Thank you for all your hard work! Comment from : JWest fishing |
The +1 in the bearing count is NOT the line roller bearing how are we supposed to take what you say seriously when you dont even know that the +1 reffers to the AR clutch or anti reverse bearing, they count it as a +1 because it is still a bearing, but its a different kind of bearing Comment from : Gabriel Duarte |
