You have to understand how global currency's valuations are calculated, what buying a foreign Nation's debt means and does to that nation's trade with the debt owner, and how everything is interrelated China wants to keep their currency devalued in order to achieve a favorable trade relation Since they are primarily a manufacturer/exporter country, they want the USD stronger than their CY If they were to try and cash in on our debts, which they have bought, the USD devalues, the CY goes up, and no one buys any of their products They fall into an export trade deficit, people lose jobs, their economy suffers Nations buying other nation's debt is one way to keep currencies relatively stable and somewhat equal Nations have to walk a fine line between trade negotiations and the effects of those agreements in relation to how trade and cash flows This is a big part of that whole "World Economy" stuff they talked about in the early 2Ks There's more to this, but look into the PRC, China's purchasing of other nation's debt, selling it to other nation's/individuals, and the BS they pull when it's time to pay those bond holders back on their investments Even the act of paying out on those bonds can create economic issues when the foreign debt owned is from the same nationbr to which the bonds holders reside, as was the case in the 80's (I think) with the UK, where the UK suffered some major economic obstacles caused from this However, China doesn't invest in US companies, land, or tangible-type assets, they buy the debt that the US owes, so no, they won't be marching in to take over large swaths of the US ala Red Dawnbrbr(Not bothering to proofread this, just my two cents while spending some quality time on the can)
