Both of my parents are extraordinarily bad with money and I've spent a lot of time shaking off some of the bad lessons they taught me I think the most important thing mentioned in the video was explaining how you are fixing the problems you've gotten into and not trying to scare the living crap out of your kids about debt, taxes and savings Comment from : TurkeyProphet |
|
I do not understand the rationale behind " Do not associate chores with allowance" The idea behind it is sound if explained to the kid If they want something , work for it By giving them an allowance without chores , you are freeing them from mundane chores but conditioning them into thinking it is ok to have a monthly salary instead of building your own paycheck I have my doubts about this video Comment from : Snapi Lifestyle |

This has always seemed like common sense to me, but I'm a bit too young to have kids at the age of 25brbrDon't treat your kids like fools; they're humans, and they deserve the respect due to a human They aren't incapable of dealing with problems, and being real with your kids is far too rare nowadaysbrbrBasically, you're raising an adult, not a kidstop looking down on them as if they'll be helpless forever; It's patronizing and condescending, even if that's not your intention Comment from : 3lit3gn0m3 |

I believe that economic principals should be integrated into Math and Social studies curriculums maybe as early as the 4th grade, maybe even earlier And I think that personal finance should be taught in conjunction the same way starting at the 6th grade level, and developing into its own course in High School This kind of financial literacy would do so much to help people be able to manage their money responsibly at an age when they actually begin to work, usually between 16-18 That little bit of knowledge would save so many from falling into a poverty spiral from which there is likely no escape As Suze Orman said, "there's a highway into poverty and not even a sidewalk to get out Of course that would require schools to go back to actually providing students with an education, and not just "teaching to the test"brbrThe lack of financial education in the US is such a huge problem, we don't even realize it exists Whenever you hear the talking heads or politicians talk about problems in our education, they never address finance I grew up in a financially stable yet very irresponsible home in a very poor area of town My grandparents, who raised me, rented their house even though my grandfather made over 80k a year in the 80's/90's in a city with a very low cost of living They purchased things from rent-to-own operations that inflated prices They never did anything to build their credit score besides buy used cars financed on the lotbrbrAnd now my grandmother is living on a fixed income because they had no retirement plan She is still renting the house I grew up in, even though she has made payments probably equal to 150 of its value Poor people have absolutely no idea how even the most basic principles of economics work, and its not their fault The rich, the investors and the bankers thrive off of that ignorance They don't want their 'secrets' getting out It's that ignorance that allowed them to get away with the blatant mortgage fraud that led to global economic collapse in 2008brbrThey guard the most basic principles of finance like they are the 'ancient Chinese secrets' that used to be ubiquitous throughout martial arts It gives them an air of superiority, that we could never do what they do And it's disgusting Financial education can't start in a home where parents don't have any themselves Comment from : August Greig |
