Out of the 4 skills I find reading is the most useful and effective I see eye to eye with Steve Kaufman and I think LingQ is a great tool The one I hate is writing I basically ignore it unless I’m taking a class and have homework I’m not sure how this affects my learning but man, I hate writing in a foreign language brbrI hope you go back to Japanese one day so we don’t have this one weird exception that comes up in your videos Also, I liked studying Japanese

No, Luca, the BEST way to learn a language (short of having an accident and waking up with Acquired Savant Syndrome speaking a random new language fluently, if that counts) is using Lucid Dreaming techniques, where you put on your headphones and start a complete audio language course recording You might run it on high speed, or you might use dream time dilation techniques You might also try and simulate an accident on purpose that turns you into a savant and gives you acquired savant syndrome in the language you had just played on the recorded course, with the expectation that you will wake up from the dream fluent in the new language Worked for me

I’m using Duolingo right now and my biggest complaint is it focusing very hard on writing It’s making me memorize that parle becomes parlez in certain uses I fail the test if I write somme instead of sommes or habite instead of habites In speech there is no difference in sound but it fails you Annoying

I noticed shots of Assimil books at a couple of points in this video It's interesting that many very accomplished polyglots use or outright recommend Assimil It's also interesting how most online reviewers of language learning programs more-or-less completely ignore text + audio based methods I guess comparing popular app-based learning tools grabs more interest and online traffic Glad I discovered your channel!

I’m in my mid 40s, I am getting scared that my brain is getting weary I want my brain to stay sharp as it feels like it’s dulling I’m hoping it’s not too late to begin learning languages For one, I’m confident it will probably be one of the healthiest things I can do for my brain Secondly, I want to travel the world and be able to communicate Im very grateful I found this channel I hope I can learn at least a half dozen languages I guess it all starts with picking one language and a date Thank you for what you do

I had a teacher who had a son who moved to Italy without any tools and he only knew basic phrases of Italian like grazie, ciao, and arrivederci Again no tools (books, class) and he would speak to people in basic Italian and people would reply and in certain situations he would learn and over the next 3-7 months he was very professional in Italian, she says he's been there, now about 8 years that was a while ago, when you're in a country you're immersed, you have a partner, and you have a need to comunicate He's right when he says there's no best way because it's up to you, you can never learn a language (perfectly) by memorizing words from a language dictionary because that's not how we learned English, just by illustratiions and real life experience can get you there

Lately I've been enjoying reading Wikipedia articles in my target language, and using Google Translate to translate and deconstruct the grammar of any particular sentence - which is surprisingly easy It is of course more widely applicable to languages that have a Latin writing system in the case of a speaker of an Indo-European language, but also with Chinese for example as you can download different Chrome Extensions that help to ease such reading Just a recommendation, try it!

Every languages I different, therefore different methods apply depending on the language you are trying to learn If the language has a different alphabet or thousands of characters (Japanese and Chinese dialects) you will most likely need to focus time on learning these characters

This is so true While duolingo and spanishpod101 can help you to start your journey quite well they are not worth it after week or two because learning will be slow that way and you're forced to repeat tasks about random topics you're not even interested in before you can move into next group of words Way to burn out quickly
