Mr Ben
WRONG! This is how the CHALLENGE COIN started The challenge coins started by The Special Operations Executive (SOE)brbrThe Special Operations Executive (SOE) was a British World War II organisation It was officially formed on 22 July 1940 under Minister of Economic Warfare Hugh Dalton, from the amalgamation of three existing secret organisations Its purpose was to conduct espionage, sabotage and reconnaissance in occupied Europe (and later, also in occupied Southeast Asia) against the Axis powers, and to aid local resistance movements br brOne of the organisations from which SOE was created was also involved in the formation of the Auxiliary Units, a top secret "stay-behind" resistance organisation, which would have been activated in the event of a German invasion of Britain br brFew people were aware of SOE's existence Those who were part of it or liaised with it are sometimes referred to as the "Baker Street Irregulars", after the location of its London headquarters It was also known as "Churchill's Secret Army" or the "Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare" Its various branches, and sometimes the organisation as a whole, were concealed for security purposes behind names such as the "Joint Technical Board" or the "Inter-Service Research Bureau", or fictitious branches of the Air Ministry, Admiralty or War Office br brSOE operated in all territories occupied or attacked by the Axis forces, except where demarcation lines were agreed with Britain's principal Allies (the United States and the Soviet Union) It also made use of neutral territory on occasion, or made plans and preparations in case neutral countries were attacked by the Axis The organisation directly employed or controlled more than 13,000 people, about 3,200 of whom were womenbrbrHOW THE COIN WORKS: A person would be sent deep into enemy territory and would be given the name of a contact he or she would be meeting One of the best ways to know that person was who they said they would be was to ask for change of a note or coin This note or coin would be (for example)1p, 2p, 5p,10p, 20p, 50p, 1pound or 2 pound coin Each coin has a date So if the person was the right person and you are to give him/her a 2005 50p as he is expecting and in return gives you a 1992 20p, a 2001 20p and a 1999 10p as he/she was meant to, then you both knew you have the right person brbrIf any of the coins had been wrong then either of the persons would have aborted the mission at that point brbrHENCE the CHALLENGE COIN brbrThese tactics where used by the British Special Forces SAS and the US Troops who train under them toward the end of WW2brbrDuring the Korean War, The US Green Berets where formed and the stories where handed down to them by their TI's (Training Instructors) and as such the young troops adopted this as a means of knowing who is who among the Special Forces as a status of pride and also a bit of fun with new recruits Coins where used from places they had served they told their stories among themselves as they did mostly at the NCO clubs or bars they would drink atbrbrThis became more common among the other branches of the US Military during the Vietnam War through AMMO troops as Special Forces would need AMMO and AMMO troops of the USAF and US Navy new everyone brMore and more branches of the US Military adopted the coin idea as the war progressed Coins where starting to be struck personalized with each Branch/Regiment/Squadron/Platoon brbrThe drinking game had began with the idea of the person who did not have their coin had to by the roundbrbrIf a person of the military was to pull a coin on any other, the other pulls a coin back in return, the first to pull has to by the round UNLESS someone has no coin to pull Then he/she who has no coin is the person/persons to buy the round of drinksbrSometimes it is the last to pull his/her coin buys the drinks pending on the branch brbrThis works well on a New Recruit as he or she has not yet had time to earn his/her coin It became a Challenge to get one and to try and pull one to get that free beer brbrThe coins started showing up in large numbers a lot more as a fun bit of thank you from CO's with the US Military around 1991 onward from Desert Storm Now everyone has them and most who do have 5 or more brbrEven Military family members have coins these days brbrAlthough so many have these coins who have served Not many I come across carry one Not many I have met know how they work or have any idea as this young man in the video has to why they started in the first place brbrThank you for taking the time to learn the true facts of the CHALLENGE COINbrbrIYAAYAS !
