Dave had an opportunity to clarify the difference between an HDHP (High deductible Health Plan) with HSA (Health Savings Account) and a PPO or HMO which has lower deductibles but higher premiums, but didn’t :)

I typically look at the deductible amount I believe hsa are offered because the health plan offers a high deductible I'd rather pay more monthly to have a low deductible than pay a low premium and have a high deductible Its a peace of mind and yes its a math thing but each family is different

I verify insurance for a living Literally thousands of plans across the US Never heard of a max out of pocket of 500k The most I’ve seen is 12k (which is also ridiculous) Also - we always (if we can) go PPO We have always always had a PPO I have 2 kids under 4 and we go the doctor a lot I can’t give them all my money to meet the deductible on the HMO/ HSA A plan with an HMO/HSA can be very limiting on who you can see With a PPO I can see anybody and I don’t have to get insurance approval Also HSA is not an insurance - it’s just an account you put money in to pay medical expenses (which they also have for the PPO , they just call it the FSA) When I was pregnant i wanted the best coverage with the lowest out of pocket and that’s what the wife wants I had a HSA/ HMO when I was first pregnant and every time we went to the doctor “that’ll be $694,$312,$456” depending on what I was getting done On my PPO I paid a flat $50 copay every time The HMO/HSA almost broke us at the beginning

Dave has the right idea, but he's incredibly confused about how health insurance works There is no copay above max oop He also confused max oop w annual coverage limits AND somehow doesnt know that ACA compliant plans like all HSA's will cover all costs above max oop The coinsurance happens between the deductible and the max oop This guy needs to find a good broker, not call dave

HSA is designed to eliminate early benefits but provide a tax shelter whether you have medical bills or not With a premium savings of $2088 per year and a max out of pocket difference of about the same ($2k) this becomes a bit of a no brainer Take the HSA you aren't saving "a bazillion" dollars (more like $1200 in tax liability) but there is very few circumstances that would justify the guaranteed cost of the PPO premium and the risk of a possible max out of pocket medical event vs the possible HSA higher max out of pocket and the guaranteed tax savings

Did you really just say the max out-of-pocket could be up to $500,000? This is the reason you should let insurance agents discuss this ACA limits the max out of pocket And there's no way to calculate a person's better scenario without seeing the premiums HSA are not always less expensive

Do you mean HMO? Because HSA is in addition to health insurance not an insurance plan And, it depends on the plans We have a PPO because it is actually cheaper due to what it covers and lower deductible HMO had a lower monthly contribution but you were nickel and dimed on every service But, you need to look at your actual plans to figure out which is a better because it varies a lot

An HSA isn't an insurance plan You're referring to an HDHP (High Deductible Health Plan) which can be an EPO, PPO, or HMO HSA (Health Savings Account) is just a feature in some qualifying plans That PPO his wife is talking about might just have one This call made me laugh as an insurance agent Insurance is freakin confusing, isn't it? :-D

Unless you are sick all the time the HSA is usually better than the PPO HSA typically has lower up front costs like premiums and ongoing costs like max out of pocket The PPO typically has higher premiums and higher max out of pocket but it's cheaper when you get health care for things like doctors appointments The PPO is the way to go if you are really worried about your health and tend to spend a lot The HSA is better if you don't see the doctor often Also HSA has a tremendous tax advantage with the savings account
