Only this guy could survive an encounter with Anton Comment from : Joseph Kelly |
Any shop keeper worth their salt would have had a double barrel shot gun full of buck shot at the ready especially in po dunk Texas Comment from : Ray Medina j |
I think it’s the opposite that he’s suppressing his rage at the shop keeper and that him doing the coin toss and sighing is that he wants to kill this guy but in his twisted morals there are rules so he gives the guy a chance to live with the coin he was annoyed the whole time but he suppressed his instinct to just get rid of him kind of like you’re lucky the coin saved you it’s your lucky day Comment from : _____h |
POV you engage in small talk with a sociopath Comment from : Ty Crane |
You do realise they are just acting? Comment from : Myth Great Britain |
I think one should be more cautious when it comes to explaining the motivation and behavior of a character It's not as simple as it seems to know if Anton is frustrated or becoming friendly Comment from : Fernando Daniel Bruno |
This guy could have the right-half of his head chopped off and we wouldn't notice Comment from : S Rly |
i would pass the fuck out Comment from : fancyson |

Your lighting doesn’t work It’s spooky and makes it look like you’re trying to hide a deformity or something Comment from : Quin |
Are you a student of Psychology and cenimatics?brbrNever mind, you apparently don't know what you're talking about Comment from : DEATH the GOAT |
The shopkeeper should have had a silent foot alarm for the old bitch in the house She keeps a loaded sawed off 12 ga shot gun by the stove and can appear without making a sound Click Ka-pow-eee Anton's head comes clear off his neck They grab a beer from the cooler and laugh it off Comment from : GENDER HAPPY |
What movie is this again? Comment from : Jamere Jackson |
what happened to the right side of your face? Comment from : Law |
Can't remember when I saw this movie but it's absolutely gold or it just might be that I like seeing blood and people getting killed brutally lol I'm that crazy 🤪 Comment from : YNGDMND |
One thing I never understood was: He doesn't just flip the coin for everyone So if he "didn't want to kill" this guy, why did he feel compelled to flip it? Comment from : natman2939 |
1:47 "throat tenses or swallows which could be taken as a way to suppress speech or as a suppression of a pacifying behavior"br--orhe's swallowing the peanuts in his mouth You do realize that plastic wrapper he puts on the counter was from the peanuts he was eating, right? The scene starts with him eating the peanuts He swallows to avoid talking with his mouth full Comment from : natman2939 |
He didn’t make eye contact until the shop keeper assumed to know where he was coming from If not for that, that he would’ve stayed largely invisible Comment from : Rustin Cohle |
I believe Anton just didn’t approve of how the man was married into his good life and believes everything should be worked for to be kept wich is why he gave the man a Choice of luck and he was a lucky man to start with Comment from : SirPopSticks |
If you haven’t already, start making movies on big brother house Comment from : SirPopSticks |

This scene is one of the many reasons why you should mind your own business Comment from : Jan Paul Garde |
“That became your lucky quarter”brI would have a heart attack right on the spot Comment from : BLUE _SHOGUN |
The store owner belittled him and (from a IP man perspective) it's a threat say like this if I disagree with your spiritual system openly U will lash out Comment from : Alexander Crocker |
I disagree Anton's not stressed, he's an asshole All this shows is the need for a shotgun if you run a service station Also Anton is literally the producer's and hollywood's contempt for middle American rubes, scoffing at marrying into the place, telling him to keep the quarter, etc There;'s no grand analysis here, it's just an asshole scene from start to finish with a strong character torturing a vulnerable one Hey but its well acted! Comment from : Mark Morris |
This scene stood out to me, it hints that there is some depth and subtext to Anton Chigurh that he can be triggered by some random guy trying to be polite to him Also if the shopkeeper would have lost the coin toss, this would have been the only kill Anton made that was not necessary This scene somehow ties together with the last scene where he has been involved in a car crash and refuse the kids offer to just give him a shirt and his insisting on paying for it A way of cementing this guy as a Psychopath by showing that he somehow cant relate to or cope with kindness Comment from : Sohave |
I found the way -(in -which); he talks (and eats); strange (though; I can be/am rather: -strange; myself: amditedly; LOL)!! Comment from : MK S |
Hmmm the lighting is a choice Not sure If I want to subscribe if all the content is lit thus Comment from : Carol Dier |
As great of a scene this was There were several problems with this script Comment from : North West Palm |
Anton is a man of few words The words he does use, however, have a purpose He’s not one for small talk In my opinion, he would’ve left without incident if the shopkeeper hadn’t brought up useless topics, as implied by the “you don’t know what you’re talking about, do you?” This scene was executed perfectly Comment from : lxcky 😟 |
Anton choked because he realized the shopkeeper didnt work for what he had , he married into his wife's family business making the shopkeeper in Antons eyes less than a man Anton is the quintessential Alpha male in the room Comment from : GODSTOMPER |
I'll have to remember that: If confronting or confronted by someone, if I don't want to look submissive and wary I need to keep constant unflinching attentive eye contact If the other person keeps diverting his eyes, especially downwards, it's a sign that he is being intimidated or submissive, either trying to be non-confrontational or on the defensivebrbrI suppose it could become a literal staring contest Comment from : WarpRulez |
I know that the half face lighting is a thing, but im going to not watch this video any further Comment from : Steve Butts |
When Anton looks to the ground after the coin toss its not because of frustration its because of empathy and sadness that he might have to kill another one Comment from : BT GREENHOUSES |

He is looking at the floor to check how much time it will take to reach the blood in his shoes (considering the material of the floor) Comment from : Utshaw |

Can someone explain to me why anton is so schocked/irritated when the guy says he married into the family? Comment from : Graveyard God |
He's not frustrated with the coin toss He's not bothered with the outcome of the toss and the result that the outcome, he is merely following the rules of his philosophy The sigh is one of boredom and going through the motions he would kill him but for the ritual of the coin toss He's saying here we go again Everyone gets their chance Comment from : David Morrison |
The actor that plays the shopkeeper was amazing in this scene It looks like the crew hid a camera in the store and put Javier to talk to an innocent person Comment from : Octavyo Carmo |

Yes! Well, you haven't read my review of the scene on (Rotten Tomatoes) Here, I provide a copy of my take 'The Coin Toss' - I can't recall a scene in film that exhibits such intensity as this one Javier Bardem is flawless in this portrayal of the epitome of someone who might resemble the looks of a male Madusa I've seen this scene countless times, and always seem to fine something fascinating as this all plays out What makes this whole scene as mesmerizing as it develops, is the superb attention to detail and the minute and subtle inflections and props, which are all great acting tools that Bardem musters up to project the chilling vibes that evoke fear and trepidation And yet, we must reciprocally commend Gene Jones - the recipient of Bardem's terrorizing aura - to complete the successful eliciting of every nerve racking moment And yet, there is even more diversity of emotion packed into this bone chilling experience Bardem uses so successfully props and quips A rather gruesome smile, as he states he could come back later The slipping in a piece of candy that seems to punctuate or emphasize his or Jones comments - making this scene looking like it was a natural, realistic event pulled right out of a time capsule This isn't an acting scene - one might think - but something that actually happened in a day in the life of a notorious and brutally crime minded individual Note, that this is not a monolog of verbal intimidation, but also gestures that totally enhance the effect of a hair-raising interaction - as though comprable to meeting the grim reaper himselfd my review of the scene, but here I will provide my take Comment from : Doug Obujen |

When I was watching this scene, I thought for a moment that the shopkeeper would just faint out of fear At one moment, he really seems like overwhelmed, especially at the moment when he started speaking about closing the shop He seemed like losing touch with the reality for a moment He was incredibly terrifiedbrAnton is one hell of a psycho Comment from : Don Kovi |

How accurate is reading body language of an actor in a scene?brbrDo actors make sure their subconsciously acting out with their body? Comment from : Michael Antonio |
6:22 I have to disagree again When Anton coughs he is showing disgust He’s actually disgusted by this shopkeeper at how pathetic his life is It’s at this moment he decides he deserves the chance to die Comment from : Gitfiddle 7766 |
I have to disagree The lack of eye contact at the beginning of the scene is dismissiveness, not confidence Anton doesn’t give a shit about the shop keeper and he’d like to keep it that way Unfortunately the gas station owner interrupted his day which sets him off Anton can’t stand dealing with petty things and petty people (that’s they way he judges people) Anton has a very high opinion of himself He gets to play god with a quarter Anton believes this mans life is so pathetic that he’d be doing him a favor by giving him a chance to die He also relieves himself of the actual burden of judgement by leaving the murder up to chance In Anton’s mind if he leaves it up to chance it’s not really him causing the death It’s more of an existential threat It’s sick and twisted logic Comment from : Gitfiddle 7766 |
