DO NOT EVER clean your coins with olive oil!!!! The oils are organic and will rot and go rancid after some time and give your coins a funky smell Use MINERAL OIL ONLY!!!!! It acts more like a machine oil to your coins and preserves the luster without leaving organic compounds embedded in the pores of the metal!!! Mineral Oil will also help keep your coins from developing carbon spots while stored in flips!!! Also, a safe way to clean off dirt and sticky funk without cleaners is to suspend a strainer in a pan of really hot, but NOT BOILING, water a let the coins soak for a few minutes and most gum and other hardened grime will usually, soften, loosen and wipe off without scarring the coin!!! Keep the coins off the bottom of the pan to keep from over heating and causing unnatural tone discolorations My "disclaimer" is IF you burn your hand doing this, you have no business coin collecting!!!!! Ha! Ha! Later!!! Comment from : Seth Sponhower, American National |

I would never use olive oil on rare coins especially high-grade coins I am afraid that any oil residue left over from the olive oil would over time attract dust or dirt which over time could cause the coin to develop spots on it The safest thing I can think of to use on a rare coin is acetone Comment from : Chris D |
