I think fine points of language are almost impossible to learn Example: how do you explain the different meanings of "dude" as an expression Like "Dude!" as in disappointment "Dude!" as congratulations, "Dude?" as in what are you doing? etc I remember that one time I was with friends and a woman dropped a huge bag of coins that split open and went everywhere I immediately yelled "Dude!" and it cracked my friends up Hard to translate the senses of the thing brI really like your videos They have very practical advice
Comment from : seewaage

Hello, Steve,brEnglish is my second language, Croatian is my first I wanted to give you a new term for language learning I call the process “ assimilation” I think that is the closest term for what happened in my case Reading, with a dictionary by my side, going to lectures, more reading and constant listening I love LingQ and could not agree with you more about your method of learning brI am learning French now, just the way you suggest, and going through acquisition/assimilation process Thank you so much I am a permanent fan ❤ Sanja

Comment from : Scrappy Bob Barker

Vinicius Villela
I think that it is particulary brilliant the idea of at least waiting a while before showing some particular grammar details to a learner Without some reference, even a very unneducated one, the grammar is astouneashing abstract If that is true even for the grammar of our native language, its goes without saying how hard it will be for a beginner student of a second language
Comment from : Vinicius Villela

Gizamalukeix
This is a lot of good advice because I've been studying Japanese for almost 9 years and can barely have a simple conversation and only understand about 10 of what I hear

Thomas Robertson
My brother studied languages at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in California The pace of study was intense Students had to master the language course in 36-64 weeks Psychologically it was very difficult, but fortunately he was helped by Yuriy Ivantsiv's book "Polyglot Notes Practical tips for learning foreign languages” The book " Polyglot Notes" became a desk book for my brother, because it has answers to all the problems that any student of a foreign language has to face Thanks to the author of the channel for this interesting video! Good luck to everyone who studies a foreignbrlanguage and wants to realize their full potential!

Brian Saltmarsh
Absorbing a language is a process of osmosis Let it sink in at a natural rate We should give our brains more credit for remembering stuff we feel we've glossed over It does, and will bubble up , and if it doesn't today perhaps it will tomorrow
Comment from : Brian Saltmarsh

didemkilinc
Thank you for all the information Steve As an Esl teacher I find it very useful and it totally describes my approach to learning languages One thing I am curious about: What are your ideas about the stage of learning that is called “the plateau?” This is where most people stop improving
Comment from : didemkilinc

Haryadi S

I have a hard time getting over the beginners hump because most beginners material is just so boringbrbr"Hello, Tom"br"Hello, Jane"br"Where are you going?"br"I'm going to the library, how about you?"br"I'm going back to the dormitory"br"Bye"br"Goodbye"brbrNobody actually talks like this
Comment from : freebie

What were those Intermediate + materials you used for Mandarin? I'm looking for that next step
Comment from : Sam

TraxisOnTheLines
You mention Persian, Turkish, and Arabic - Could you look into Kurdish? Personally biased towards the Kurmanji dialect, but hearing your process on any of it's variations would be incredibly interesting It's a much less known language, and has fewer resources, so it would be interesting to see your strategies when the available content is limited

How much and often do you review your vocab? I'm on LingQ for French and listen to a story by Alice Ayel daily (she's great) Do you print a vocab lists daily and memorize new words, or do you mainly just keep listening and reading? I learned Russian, somewhat, at DLI years ago and wasn't sure vocab lists were good for long term retention Thanks

I am currently learning Spanish and Mandarin I am Puerto Rican and my parents did not teach me any Spanish I know bits of other languages (German, Tagalog, Japanese, etc), but I want to stop and learn the two I just put up My reason for learning Mandarin is because I just learned how they use tones and I understood it better
Comment from : Jon Plaud
