Hello Semingson! Thanks for the video and it really helps I just wonder if you can share your presentation, or the complete video of this workshop as I find it very relevant to the subject matter I am searching for now a days to design a training program for ECD teachers on all what you are talking about It would be a great help if you could generously share one of the two; the presentation or the whole workshop video Thanks! I'm sorry, but I have to correct you on your phoneme vs sound explanation Linguists draw a distinction between speech and language Language is virtual, for it exists in our heads and can't be studied directly, while speech is physical, and it can be heard (speech proper) or seen (written speech) Basically, linguists study speech, the only medium available to them, in order to understand language they have no access tobrbrA SOUND is the smallest unit of SPEECHbrA PHONEME is the smallest unit of LANGUAGEbrbrEg Take the following words: cat, caught, keep, kit The initial letter represents 4 SOUNDS (because the exact pronunciation is affected by the sounds that follow) but only 1 PHONEME - [k] In other words, the 4 sounds correspond to just 1 phonemebrbrIn summary: you have 44 phonemes in English, yet the sounds you hear in speech are a lot more numerous Your students would go crazy and would never learn to read if you tried to teach them sounds (which have to be taught on a word-to-word basis) instead of the 44 phonemesbrbrSorry, English is not my native language, so I hope I managed to highlight the difference Comment from : Richard P Franklin |
