I want to thank you for your videos They are informative and helpful to my students I am currently in the Master of Education program at GCU I already have 3 other degrees, including an MBA in Marketing Research I must say, as a child, I had a stuttering problem with my "W's" and attended speech therapy once a week I remember, in my first-grade class, I wanted to read aloud with other students; my teacher said, "Sarah, you can't read because of your stuttering You can't read aloud in class again" I remember this very clearly From that point on, if any teacher asked me to read aloud, I would shake, stutter, stammer with anxiety This followed me clear into my late '30s to early '40s I had teachers say, your parents are poor; you have a 70 chance of dropping out of high school Freshman year in high school, a Spanish teacher looked at me and said, you are wearing a handmade sweater; you will remain poor and go nowhere in life My mom knitted a sweater for me, and I loved it You are not as bright as the other students It was not until 2008, when I graduated with an MBA in Marketing Research (Honors), that I realized all these teachers were wrong I listened to teachers who thought children who came from poor families would remain that way Yes, mom was a young mother, but I was a police officer and Registered Nurse during my childhood We did not stay poor I want other educators to know that reinforcing positivity and encouraging students who live in a low socioeconomic area does not mean they are stupid or end up on welfare living off the government Children take the words of a teacher to heart, which stays with them for life Sometimes the terms will affect a student's self-esteem and self-worth negatively or positively, depending on the child I am 46 and determined to motivate children to be all they can be I refuse to look at a child from a poor neighborhood as worthless Children are our future All children need to know they are loved, wanted because we do not know what is going on at home Comment from : SLN74 |
