I absolutely love this video Now I know why I like to dress like a dandy It's because I don't like to wear a uniform everyday being boring Now I can see all classes of people are just wearing uniforms based on their class or group that they identify with We need to bring back and encourage the emphases on the individual Comment from : Jordan Bittner |
A gentleman’s dress is “boring” because the purpose of his garments is also to show off the dress of the ladies 😄 Comment from : SG Roadie |
Very cool information, but I must say I never put Beau Brummel and "boring fashion" together I always considered Beau Brummell to be very well-dressed and even a bit fancy as he was a dandy brVery eye-opening video Comment from : Joseph Nebeker |

how can you find those men's illustrations of fashion in the websites you provided? i can't find a single one and only women's come up :( i really would love to have the higher quality version of those images, instead of screenshots Comment from : saaros |

I’m a goth, so while I kind of follow the “boring” menswear colours by wearing mainly black and grey, I’ve always been more interested in doing interesting things with silhouette, different cuts and materials, etc I’ve begun transitioning from a “jeans and band T-shirts” wardrobe to a historically inspired wardrobe, particularly that of the turn of the century Learning about and getting to wear menswear that I actually enjoy is important to me too, as a trans man clothes have mainly been a necessary evil but now I feel comfortable enough in myself to wear what I really enjoy rather than what will make me appear like a “regular guy” Comment from : Trassel242 |
22:34 okay I literally was heavy breathing and stroking my screen at this waist coat, it is so fucking beautiful and I love it so much I dont even know if I want to wear it myself or just convince my partner to model in it its just so beautiful and amazing aaaaaaaaaaaaa Comment from : TheKawaiifan |

I've been actively interested in the history of fashion for about three years now (mostly through the videos, you're just amazing and I'm really grateful for all the information you and the community of fashion history YouTubers provide), so when our arts history teacher (in high school) gave us an assignment to go through her presentation on Google Classsroom and summarize the historically-societal circumstances when the men's, women's and children's fashion changed (without a single lesson from her, might I add), I took it upon myself with the promise that I'd put it together and send it to my classmates I began with Beau Brummel, the single person I knew about who could have some significance, watched this video, and halfway through told myself "Fuck this," because I realized how complicated everything is and in most cases there just isn't a simple way to explain what exactly changed fashion - It's ten or a hundred things all at once and most of all, society reacting to them collectively You can describe the shift in silhouettes and specific garments used but not *why*, there's so much context at workbrNext time I see the teacher, I'm temped to ask if I could summarize the history of warfare for her as well Comment from : třeba něco napíše |

Thank you for the essay! I always blamed the blandness of menswear on two world wars that made people poorer and also brought army uniforms of boring colours and made men shave their heads - thus creating the image of a manly man Add awful quality of fast fashion to that brbr1970-1990 were an improvement from that, although the colourful and wild styles were not for everyone - there are caricatures of "men looking like women" because of bright colours, long hair and high heels And that's where the problem of toxic masculinity comes brbrI believe everyone should be able to wear whatever they want I know that there are a lot of guys who want something more than just jeans and t-shirts, but there is just not much on the market Even in women's fashion when you wear something that stands out you get weird looks or even unwanted comments from strangers mocking you for being different I want people to not be afraid of looking different, and it's becoming easier and easier, but still far from idyllic The idea of what people "should" look like is still deeply embedded in minds of many I recently had a passionate argument with my bf about modern fashion - he prefers casual or sportswear and thinks that nonconformist clothes make men less manly I really love styles from Jojo and fantasy series and RPGs (witcher 3 for example), but he said they're either too gay or too fancy like it's a bad thing I literally cried for half an hour afterwards - that's how much I hate toxic masculinity Comment from : Lemon Greed |

I still blame Beau Brummel because he was against any ornamentation in men's attire and fostered the boring austerity that characterized men's attire ever since Comment from : Chico Penteado |

Correction: Tartan wasn't banned by "the English"; the way you phrased it was very misleading
br
br1) The ban only lasted a mere 26 years between 1746-1782 It wasn't a centuries long suppression leading to Scottish people forgetting what tartan stood for, which you seem to implybr2) Scotland and England had been governed as a single nation since 1707: almost 40 years prior Any decisions made by the government were British decisions Neither Scotland nor England had it's own parliament at that time
br3) Tartan was banned for civilians, however members of the Highland regiment of the British (not English) army could still wear tartan
br
brThe reason for the ban was that the Highlanders had been key in instigating a civil war (in both Scotland & England) against the current monarchy Tartan was a part of Highlander culture (ie the Gaelic speaking people The Scots living in the Lowlands spoke Scots/ English and had so for centuries) It was not the culture for the majority of Scottish people at that time, so the banning of tartan was an attempt to punish Highlanders specifically for rebelling against the British (not English) crown
br
brA more accurate statement would be: The British crown + government banned tartan for civilian use in 1746, but repealed it 26 years later due to pressure from the Highland Society of London Comment from : LA Marshall |

The thing that drives me crazy about American Men's suits & fashion in general is that it takes plain to the extreme The suits are just a simple rectangular block with no taper in the waist or the shoulders, and this is horrible for fit men who take care of their bodies and lift weights I don't see this problem in Asia or Europe and they have well fitted suitsbrbrI wasted hundreds of dollars trying to customize an American suit, but I ended up wearing that suit once But I bought a suit on a trip to London at the French Eye store for 100 quids ($130 in 2009) and it was the best suit I ever owned I go down the street and it turns heads of women & men I go into a restaurant and men will compliment me and ask me if it's a $2000+ tailored suit and I will laugh and say I got it for $130 in London Comment from : George Ou |
Thanks for doing a video on men's fashion, it seems to get dismissed as boring so oftenbrI'd love to see a side-by-side of those "what is a dandy" articles and some of those "so hipster doesn't actually mean anything" clickbait think pieces from a few years back Comment from : SharktoothJack |

Oh my gosh OH MY GOSH! I inherited an old 1842 copy of The History of tartans book!!! I bet my grandparents thought it was the gospel truth🤣 I love that I own this historical hoax! 😂❤️🤣 Comment from : Crazy Artist Lady |
Regarding men's clothes, I only see that they are either extravagant or dead boring, especially in the business and business casual segment I have yet to see any clothes that visually ruin a man's figure worse than a suit, especially if one looks at an unbuttoned suit jacket from the back A wide box, and the arms look like two disproportionately thin broom handles sticking out Comment from : Svetlana Lvova |
I always though men and women XIX fashions were ugly and disgusting compared to XVIII, XVII, XVI or even the XX century, the two extremes of the century were the ugliestearly and late I hope i'm not the only thinking that That's English thing Comment from : Carolus |
As someone who is a plane jane I love modern men's fashion, I like the cooler solid colors and the loser fits, not to mention the functional pockets Women's clothing now has to much going on, so many ruffles and designs all over, puffy sleeves, long v necks, a lot of it is tight, also much of it is for a smaller chest sizes Comment from : Marikroyals |
Oh my word I would love to have a bed in the same size & style as yours! 😍brbrAnd it's been so much fun to learn about all of the interesting styles in men's fashion around the 1830s & 1840sbrThank you for making this video and showing SO many examples 🌈 Comment from : Merry Moss 🌿 |

The ending part is so much adorable and cute Thanks for the profile on some reasons men's fashion has been "conventionally" boring Such format really takes the research a step further and without just putting a "boring" label on a topic Comment from : Артем Гірман |

my takeaway from the macaroni part was that the lyric "stuck a feather in his hat and called it macaroni" is that time period's equivalent of saying "he put a spiked choker on and called it punk" Comment from : thelemoncoffee |

Great video, & my first experience here on your channel Its great to see someone as enthusiastic as I am about history, and period specific clothing & attire Mens fashion used to be almost over-the-top for the better part of 18th century brocade, stockings, high heels, powdered wigs, tricorn hats, “dandies” and of course “Macaroni”etc There was a departure from this as the textile industry commercialized & in the 19th century, it was still quite over-the-top but mor refined Long, tall Pantaloons, waistcoats, long coat tails, tall stove-pipe hatsA mans silhouette became quite tall and lanky I, personally love the mid 19th century mens clothing and style Very classy, but also very lively! I say bring back the busy patterns & colors, the waist coats & especially the stove-pipe top hats! I try my best to incorporate vintage style into my look when i can just for the pleasure it gives me Great vid! 🎩 Comment from : Beatnik Records |

I'm sorry but it IS Beau Brummel's fault😂 Comment from : Chico Penteado |
This concept is analogous to the modern style precept that we must look like we made some effort in styling ourselves, but look effortless, too Huh? It’s interesting how feminine, and feminizing, the men’s fashions of the 1830s - 1840s look to modern eyes, the wasp waists, narrow shoulders and full skirts of their suits Comment from : Kimberly Perrotis |
The extremes of fashion are often what tend to be remembered and preserved When I searched online for 80s fashion, for example, it was all rainbow tutus, the most extreme shoulders, enormous hairdos, etc Nothing that we actually wore in our daily lives showed up at all Many of the elements of 80s style were very classic, feminine and flattering, and I really miss the quality of items from that time Comment from : Kimberly Perrotis |
Why is men's fashion boring?brbrbrbrc a p i t a l i s m Comment from : Ridley K |
I think familiarity has also somewhat blinded us to the extremes of men's fashion at the time of Brummel? Think about how tightly upper-class dandys' coats were fashioned - one of their valets duties was to help them fight their way in and out of them! The range of fairly weird & wild neckcloth (cravat) tying styles is pretty startling, nor to mention how high those and their shirt-points got and as for the tightness of their pantaloons! 🤦🏻♀️ Comment from : Anna_ in_Aotearoa |
It reminds me of the kinks song 'dedicated follower of fashion' about a male For females there was a rolling stones song 'she's a rainbow' Comment from : Herbert Albrecht |
This is a wonderful, fabulously researched gem of a video! I feel like it somewhat talks around the elephant in the room though the major global and cultural shifts of the 19th century! Suffragists, abolition and liberation movements, increasing resistance in occupied nations, and the class upheaval of the Industrial Revolution were provoking a ilot/i of reactionary anxiety about whiteness, class and gender roles It's ifascinating/i how this came to redefine and codify white masculinity, and how it influences European men's fashion right to the present day Comment from : E S R |
You say macaroni but all I hear is hipster Comment from : Shade Dragon |
I definitely think that the hiv epidemic had a lot to do with modern american fashion There was pressure for men to not look "suspicious" if you get what i mean After the 60s 70s and 80s there was a nosedive in the creativity and flashiness of mens clothing Comment from : Marley Mars |
bell bottoms at :08?! omg thats wild ! Comment from : A H |
I had this thought recently after watching your wonderful video I wonder if the invention of photography had anything to do with men's fashion I was thinking that people might be seeing people they admire, celebrities, the president etc in photos yet regardless of what colors that person was wearing it would appear they are wearing grey, black, brown, white So if you wanted to emulate these people that you admire you'd too buy clothing of those colors, even if they weren't the true color your heroes were wearing to begin with Anyways just a thought I don't really know anything about this field so I could be way off Comment from : Ethan Wassink |

Just wanted to leave a short appreciative note saying how much I love this series I have been binge-watching it twice by now Comment from : Anska |
Eh I'd buy the premise of the last 10 min, but for the fact that while menswear became essentially a uniform (from office to red carpet, where I've many times called it a uniform), womenswear has not only retained interesting and varied clothing (cf offices and red carpets), it has very much increased in those metrics So why bis/b men's fashion boring? Women's isn't, so the question remains Comment from : Peregrine John |
I'll take tartan pants (and a "mis-matched") waistcoat over skinny jeans and an UnderArmor t-shirt any day! While we're at it, can we bring back the kiltplease? Pretty please? Comment from : Distaff |
Puppies was mentioned in Jane Austin book, Mrs Elton had a distinct aversion to puppyism of any kind brBeau Brummel brought us pants for men All during the British Regency, (cause the King was mad) so the Prince of Wales took over and everything was fine until Beau and George didn't get along He called him fat Phat!brListen: later on Ralph Lauren did try to spiff things up with fat ties, polo live the dream shirts and fancy Western cash wear for men and women Comment from : Book Mouse |
I blame the 70s Powder blue leisure suits, checkered jackets with striped pants Let's just say it was a disaster Men said, "Yeah, no" and went to plain black or brown and live it up with the tie No-one wants to risk the 70s again Comment from : Larry Roux |
I dunno I feel like mens fashion has had plenty of interesting stuff from around 1970s to now Comment from : Kilian Alexander |

Those silhouettes were not feminine, they were recreating the silhouette of armours from late renaissance and early modern age Comment from : edraith |
Thank you for your effort on making this video, subscribed and bell Comment from : cyberrinkie |

My personal theory is that men refuse to bare their throats, to avoid anyone's seeing them swallowing when they say something false, or are unsure of And it also hides a very subtle throb in the throat which also alerts humans as to veracity and nervousness when speaking with another human The shoulders padding also hides a shrug of uncertainty Men cannot be seen as unsure about anything, so all properly tailored clothes had some padded shoulders, except for dandies Interestingly, women were considered as becoming powerful in the 80's, when a suit worn with various high-necked blouses, that covered the necks, and shoulders were padded out When that style went out for women and since, women have again been "less powerful" Comment from : Mary St Amand |
"Why is Mens Fashion Boring?"brI ask myself the same thing since I was a teenbrWomen get to wear all those cool clothes, hair styles, accessories and other things while us men get a jeans and a t-shirt? brThat's what got me into sewing Comment from : Soluco |

Why are women so obsessed with what men have done or are doingbrbrWe can see it happen throughout history, women have this looking up to and desire to replicate mens fashion and modebrbrHorse riding is an example, or the military traditions of boots and overcoats etc Comment from : judo k |

Beau Brummell, Regency influencer who wasn't quite as influential as he thought And omg a Sartor Resartus reference! Comment from : Mary Eckel |
I love/hate the lack of academic integrity the Victorians had They absolutely would just make things up, say them with their whole chest And centuries later, people still believe like half of it to-day That powerbrbrAlso, my rule of thumb is “blank changed fashion history single handedly!!” brNo No, they didn’t Comment from : N Rizzo |

I absolutely love your channel ❤️ Comment from : Miruna Brehui |
