Even if the new company tried to make the MMO, it would have to start from scratch as everything in the game is clearly dated at this point Comment from : Arische Setmses |

Thou art wrong MMOs are dead Because MMO devs, mostly game designers, to be specific, don't have the faintest idea what they're doing which was always the case, but somehow, with less streamlined game systems, stuff was better before the challenge of those barebones systems was fun, now it's all just a chorebrCrafting is 99 of the time utter garbage,brGathering is in support of that and also garbage,brWorldbuilding is almost always a fail one way or the other,brQuests are well ye olde faithful uninsipred bs Talk, fetch, killbrBut the most annoying thing, I think, is that we don't get any agency What pisses me off more is that Palia, a game that's in beta with only 2 maps that aren't all that big gives you more agency, and sure, it has no actual combat, and there's a lot of dumb limitations, but I am genuinely stoked at the idea that I can make shitloads of cool furniture, expand my house and have my own little dream farm AGENCY! Allowing people to set personal goals and allowing them to pursue them along questing and whatever story you're trying to tellbrMMOs are deadbrI've played them all Have some fond memories, but they are dead Comment from : Arthank |

The only difference between Reckoning and Re-Reckoning (the remake) is that Re-Reckoning has one additional DLC that continues the story of the base game, which isn't avaiable on the old versionbrbrThat said, i love KoA and bought both versions with all of the DLC It isn't on the same Triple A level as the Fallout or Elder Scrolls series, but it's still a damn great game Like you pointed out, it feels a lot like Fable so anyone who likes that series will get a kick out of KoA as well I never knew about the background of the studio though, it's a real shame that such a great game didn't get the recognition it deserves because it was made by the wrong people Comment from : High Demon Elgrim |

Is anyone at all surprised that Curt Schilling turned out to be as disgusting and bigoted as he is incompetent and hypocritical? Comment from : Wobbles And Bean |

22:00 I once worked with a guy like this ×1,000 Strap in, this is gonna be a long read but goddamn if it isn't entertaining, if only for how ɓαƚshìƚ insane it isbrbrHis name was Yosuke For some reason, Square Enix thought he was the right choice to be handed the reins to develop a AAA title that was bialso/i/b a new IP They did this despite him never making a game before, his only industry experience was making a dinky little minesweeper appbrbrThe power went to his head instantly, and how I was the producer for the game, when I joined the team I was the 3rd one assigned to the project Spoiler: I wouldn't be the last, either Turnover was ludicrously high, as anyone who iwasn't/i fired during one of Yosuke's many megalomaniacal mantrums, would quit within a matter of weeks Not even the owners and top execs of the studio Square contracted out to develop the game, were safe from Yosuke He had the power to fire them, too So they just shut themselves in their offices and avoided him as much as possible, essentially throwing us employees to the wolves with little to no support from thembrbrWhat made Yosuke so insufferable wasn't just that he was a tyrant, but he was also a manchild Like, full blown meltdowns, screaming fits, and throwing objects level of manchild I had nothing to do all day, because Yosuke wouldn't let me create a production timeline He said he wasn't done with preproduction yeteven though the game was supposedly in post-beta Even if I had gone ahead and made a timeline though, well first he'd have fired me, but he would never adhere to it The guy was submitting bitwo hundred changes to the design doc, every single day/i/b Post-beta Two hundred changes A daybrbrThose of you who have worked in game development before all just had a brain aneurysm brbrLet me explain why that's so bad The design doc is basically the game development bible, it's the foundational document from which everything in the game is built upon It's one of the first things you do when creating a video game It's kinda like a blueprint You can't build a house when the blueprint isn't drawn up yet, you could finish putting all the walls up, only to find out the architect changed his mind and now wants an open floorplan You'd have no choice but to tear it all down and start over again, wasting an obscene amount of time, resources, and manpowerbrbrThat's exactly what happened with the game Devs just played Minecraft all day, and the art team would dutifully work on creating art assets despite knowing it would all get scrapped the next day, cuz at least they could add the unused work to their portfolio for the inevitable job hunt they knew they'd have to do soon enough No one ever got any actual work done under Yosuke because of his incessant changes One time, he even scrapped the entire design of a main character, so everything that had been implemented at that point, from art assets to the AI programming, pathing, mocap work, bieven voice lines,/i/b all thrown away Months of work and millions of dollars, wasted The studio owner tried to justify it to himself by saying the character looked too much like me (which admittedly she did, out of sheer coincidence) and that after I got canned they were worried about me coming after them for using my likeness, which is nine kinds of BS The owners frequently played mental gymnastics to justify Yosuke's obscene levels of incompetence, even as he singlehandedly ran the studio into the groundbrbrYosuke would always see something in an anime he liked (because of course he did) and demand that it be implemented in the game The problem was, anime isn't real life, and the futuristic technologies he saw in the anime didn't exist When the lead developer told him that, he fired them on the spot I think that time, he wanted the game to send calls and text messages to the player's phone It took us several hours to finally get Yosuke to understand that such a thing was not only impossible, but also very very illegalbrbrSomething similar occurred one other time during our weekly touch base Yosuke wanted some kind of peripheral accessory for the game, some odd contraption that would spray mist in the room anytime a ghost was nearby in-game Obviously, we all told him that wasn't gonna happen (we'd taken to telling him no as a unified front, cuz he wouldn't fire all of usin theory) Yosuke put his hoodie up, sharply yanked the cord so hard it engulfed his entire face like an adult japanese Kenny, turned his chair to the wall, crossed his arms, and sulked for the rest of the meeting He just sat there pouting, blatantly ignoring anyone who tried to ask him a questionbrbrObviously, the game ran WAY over deadline and over budget There was no way in hell this game would break even, let alone make a profit I can't understand why Square never removed him from the project Even if they had a contract, surely Yosuke had failed to hold up his end, Square probably could have replaced him easily with any of the experienced people on our side It's like they didn't even care how much money they lost, or how badly they were screⱳing over the studiobrbrI really tried my best, but with no way to do my actual job, I only lasted 6 months before I was fired We'd been trying to get out a vertical slice demo ready for E3, and were in serious crunch The dev team consisted of 10 guys, so I ordered 8 extra large pizzas I thought that was ok, it was new york style so one extra large pizza was the size of a wagon wheel Lol nope, the dev team gobbled them all up within minutes and claimed they were still hungry So, I got fired Fired over goddamn pizzabrbrYou wanna know what the real kicker is, though? That wasn't even my worst experience working in the video games industry HeII, I wouldn't even put it in my top 3 I have way too many horror stories Comment from : Wobbles And Bean |

My thoughts throughout the video:br - oh, hey, a documentary on a game I have never heard ofbr - oh, hey, a rich person I have never heard ofbr - oh, Amalur, I remember that That was fun Not the best RPG, but not bad either It did some really interesting things Now I know why if felt a bit mmo-esquebr - oh, the spending habits of the video game industrybr - oh, politics that could never happen herebr - oh, now we're properly into money laundering and false promisesbr - oh, now we're into croundfounding stretch goal lies territorybr - oh, now we're adding uncomfortable political positions on social media Comment from : HappyBeezerStudios - by Lord_Mogul |

I was practically drooling over KoA before it released and once I got my hands on it, the excitement quickly began to fade Because of gameplay I chose mage and honestly, at the highest difficulty, I was just meteor-ing mobs and boss monsters alike and it got boring and uneventful very fast Its sad i honestly wanted to know what happens at the end Comment from : Lemonidas of Sourta |

I remember taking WoW seriously:brOur glorious leader saw my potential and I was pointed towards an active battlefield When I arrived, Alliance and Horde were fighting in fierce battle and flaming rocks were falling from the skies, just as I was toldbrThe NPCs were just wailing at each other, without doing any damage to each other Rocks would fall unto me, but they did no damage, nor did they make a sound impactingbrImmersion: 1/10brUninstallbrEnd of story Comment from : Fones R Phunny |

Funny that an "objective failure" of a game got a pretty successful relaunch as Re-Reckoning and still looks and functions better than a number of other games made at that time Comment from : Tobias Nexus |

Dunno when you’re gonna get to do another video like this since the popularity wasn’t that great, but the development for the game Oni, a game made by Bungie West just before the release of the first Halo, also had a pretty interesting development cycle that might be worth your time Comment from : Meganimanic |

If Curt's investment in big names for the sake of his project seems strange, remember that his only business experience was in the world of baseball American sports teams in major cities are not run like any other business on earth, because they are established industries and cultural mainstays where success is certain So, quality is irrelevant because there will never be a lack of investors or profit, and you can absolutely sign on multi-million star athletes for no other reason than it will get more butts in bleachersbrbrAt least, that's the classic baseball philosophy, the "Moneyball" philosophy: Spend huge amounts of money because more money is guaranteed Actual businesses are run by something more closely approaching the Sabremetric approach, balancing investment cost and the output of said investment The New York Yankees can absolutely afford to spend ridiculous amounts of money on superstar players who may or may not live up that amount, but a smaller city's baseball team can't, because they need wins to justify their continued existence When you're too big to fail, or more accurately too big to be allowed to fail, you have different priorities over someone just starting out or struggling to survivebrbrLikewise, a new video game company can't be run the "Moneyball" way, especially when they're putting out a new IP as their first project Where an established company putting out a new entry in an established IP can more or less expect success, a new company with a new IP has no such guarantee of success Ambitions have to be kept small because there's every likelihood that regardless of quality, the product may fail due to factors outside of anyone's controlbrbrWoW was from a known studio and a known IP Ultima Online was from a known studio and a known IP Most successful MMOs are Curt was expecting to make WoW levels of money off of an unknown IP from an unknown studio the instant the game was released That was never going to happen, even if Copernicus released as planned However, because Curt's business experience was only with a major American baseball team, he assumed that WoW money was promised from the start Comment from : First Last |

It's a real shame how all this went for the company The actual game they made was a decent first outing and they probably could have moved on to far better releases I'd also like to say that Chafee actively trying to tank a large company in his state, which would benefit greatly from the company's success, just for political clout and self-satisfaction should send him to prison Comment from : DarkChiron |
