Need based loans doesn't work for everyone My dad made too much to qualify since he owned his own business but most of the profit went back into the business This prevented me from getting any help paying for college I managed to work 40hrs a week and finish my AS degree without debt Now I'm grinding to save and invest before finishing my BS Comment from : Flat Stanley |
Is filling out the FAFSA required? My son is looking to apply to several colleges soon (I make too much to qualify for any aid) and I don't understand why I'm being told that it is REQUIRED to give my tax returns etc in order for him to apply to a college Comment from : G Delete |
If only I wasn't barred from putting my fafsa through due to being a dependency override transfer student I qualify for Cal grant but I probably wont get it till next year The fafsa system isn't for people with different circumstances Good thing I've been on beans and rice for a while lol Comment from : Kacy Deyoe |
Why would I pay for school when FAFSA is helping me to go to school? Absolutely nonsense Comment from : Keira Portillo |
I understand about poor people but I disagree there many that do meet criteria Comment from : Donell Williams |
🇺🇸 I didn't qualify for a penny! Been investing since my son was born I told my wife we won't qualify but she did it! Waste of time it's marketing for banks! Comment from : Seymore Fact |
Some states require this for graduation from high school Comment from : john jones |
hmmm maybe not you rich in NY right 😆 brBless Comment from : Hyki_- DW |

I'm self-funding my degree However, FAFSA is required to receive most scholarships and federal work study I filled it out, knowing I will not need the loans but to qualify for future grants Comment from : LadyDraconus |
Pell Grant is for students who have low EFCs or Expected Family Contributions Comment from : Lady Liberty |
Only an idiot wouldn't fill out the FAFSAbrbrAnd the value of your house has nothing to do with it Comment from : Jim Klemens |
In SC, FAFSA is also used for our state life scholarshipbrbrI think he needs to tell them that federal scholarships through FAFSA is not determined through how much they have saved, only through income and family size Comment from : brian heyward |
Use FASFA people His advice on this one is ridiculous Comment from : tfit tread |
I got over 8K this year because I filled out FASFA! Apply to FASFA Comment from : Oluwatobiloba Odebo |

What's the option? Lie about your income or saving? C'mon, think this through All the people commenting about "fill it out"- he never said not to Listening comprehension By the way, no one "takes away" your savings You either spend it on your kids or you don't Your choice Comment from : James Hough |
This video reeks of privilege Comment from : agreedboarart |
Say yes to free money and stay out of student loan debt? Why would anyone do that? Comment from : Nick Hill |
Dave, I disagree with you Many colleges use information from FAFSA to determine how to distribute institutional need based grants and scholarships, regardless if a students receives Pell Grants or federal loans, in fact some colleges won't even give scholarships to those who don't fill it out Either way, fill it out because you don't have to take any federal loans offered, but have it ready for any college that asks for it Comment from : Joey Crasher |
Thanks to Fafsa I was able to graduate with my bachelors in business management Comment from : Mike Flo |
Lol it is for Comment from : Eevee Lover666lol_JK |

FAFSA is a must for attending college Should you completely depend on it? No, but definitely take advantage of it! Comment from : Josh Is On A Mission: PR Real Estate & Finance |
It’s not that expensive for college Save for a year and Go to a state community college and get an associate for around $2000brNot horrible price brGotta work and go to school but it is possible It’s hard and takes work but it’s possible Comment from : BEAR777 |
I spent the first few years in college paying out-of-pocket thinking i wouldnt get anything from it This semester I applied just to see The application was super easy and i was able to afford 2 classes Its something! I barely get anything back from taxes and I pay about 20 percent of my yearly income in taxes Comment from : Alexandra Heinstein |
Dave is closed minded for this one Many colleges require it to be filled out for their own merit based scholarships Mine did Comment from : Sam Yazz |
But you're required to fill out the fafsa for subsidized loans and work study Also some school scholarships Comment from : Samwise G |
Why is he talking about fafsa as if it is a negative thing? He also sounds condescending when he discusses how pell is for “poor” folks He sounds ignorant Comment from : muse me |
College ain’t as cheap as it was back in the day Dave Comment from : CJ |
Fill out FAFSA, be smart and ignore the loans, taking the pell grant u get and take the scholarships your university gives you which can be blocked by NOT filling out FAFSA Comment from : Jose Manuel Herrera Sebastian |
He never said to not fill out the fafsa, he just explained how it worked Comment from : D D |
Always apply! Pell grant paid for my college classes and it did not encourage me to stay poor It helped me to be debt free with a 4 year degree I had no parental support for college and FASFA made it possible I also worked while going to school and I am not poor Comment from : Annie Curtis |
Fafsa helped me graduate without debt They covered about 75 of my courses I only had to pay a few thousand out of pocket Bless Up Comment from : Saul Reyes |
All Dave did was ramble on about the ethics of the matter Clearly the caller (or the person he was representing) is not going to be swayed by that argument Comment from : Jason Roos |
I got married early on while in college which made FAFSA based off of mine and my wife’s income We chose a school that was cheap and because of that both of our degrees were practically paid for through FAFSA It might not play out like that for everyone but it sure worked for us! Comment from : Ben Platt |
Lots of people saying this is bad advice but I know more than one person that quit their jobs so that the next year they would qualify for Pell Grants Dave is saying that you should not intentionally stay poor to qualify for Pell Grants Which I certainly agree with Pell grants give a maximum of what like $11000 a year and only if you are just absolutely dirt poor Even the cheapest University costs more than that a year so you are going to have to work or get money from your parents anyway My buddy quit his $30000 a year job so that he could qualify for $11000 worth Pell Grants the next year The math just does't make sense when you see it like that Comment from : Joseph Ditton |
Fafsa can also be used for school need based aid Comment from : Robert Hovenkamp |
Really stupid advice Comment from : Liam Maple |
Yesyou are a millionaire Dave We know that Comment from : Richard davis |
I love Dave, but this is the dumbest take I've ever heard You don't automatically get disqualified from financial aid based on parent's income There's so much more that goes into it and I'm shocked that none of his children even filled out an application Comment from : Jacob Stanziole |
Not a good advice from davebrFafsa is good just apply and see it's a gov grant Comment from : Halfway Trucking |
This guy literally hates poor people Forgive us for not being born with a silver spoon in our mouths Some of us didn't have the opportunity to stupidly lose a million dollars in a bad business deal to learn how to manage our finances 🙄🙄 Comment from : Dria Lathrop |
You have to fill out the FAFSA for work study Comment from : Adrianne Sills |
This is a bit misleading When I went to college, I was unable to even begin to qualify for a lot of scholarships without filing a FAFSA Even if you don’t qualify for free grants from the government, you should still file one because many scholarships require it Comment from : C J |
Poor people get all the breaks at the cost of middle class Bunch of BS Comment from : Mr Gilmore |
I don't get any FAFSA because I work to support myself FAFSA didn't work for me because I made "to much money" even though I was living off unemployment lol FAFSA is a scam for working human beings Comment from : Attack Chopper |
Please do not listen to him He is not informed abour this topic If you do good at school You have good grades Good ACT and SAT scores You make 100,000 a year You still can qualify to go to top colleges like Stanford for free Comment from : Maria C LopezdeAvelar |
First line of his answer and I'm gone Not sure why these videos are usually the top result bc he's full of it Comment from : saikanonojutsu |
Dave is wrong FAFSA is good Just fill out Dave's doesn't have experience with it poor advice Comment from : Halfway Trucking |
When I filled out my fafsa, the loan offer was in two parts: One to offer the tuition and the other for living expenses I always just chose the tuition If I hadn’t, my loan would have been 50k instead of 25k I paid that 25k off in 10 years Comment from : KRISIS1451 |
Bad advice 1 Fill out now so that in case of a change in circumstances (say an unforeseen medical debt) the kids have the option of getting loans 2 A few colleges make you fill out a FAFSA to get merit aid 3 If you attend a private school, the combination of the FAFSA and CSS Profile will get used for some middle income scholarships -- not necessarily just for poor families Dave is correct that it doesn't make sense for people in HIS tax bracket But even low 6-figures can benefit from aid at private schools Comment from : Santiago Mejia |
Wish I could’ve worked while I was getting my 2-year degree Life isn’t always that straight forward Comment from : kashfortheking |
I know this video is from 2016, but here's something I don't understand: My 76 year old mom is retired and receives Medicaid with her Social Security because she doesn't work anymore I thought that Medicaid was Welfare and Medicare was for people receiving Social Security, a/k/a retired or disabled people This is news to me! Mom and I don't consider Medicare as Welfare She paid off her home and car years ago and this is a big surprise to us Thank you to any responses Comment from : Jennifer Roshto |
JUST STOP BEING POOR!! Comment from : SilvioManfredDante85 |
Terrible advice, private colleges look at your Fafsa to determine need based aid packages that are from privately funded scholarships, buddy clearly doesn’t know how this works Comment from : Kyle Caudill |
Even if you do get Grant's from FAFSA you should try to have an off campus job to help with other stuff and you can get a few tax deductions if you are in college if you pay out of pocket for college expenses which can be very helpful as well Comment from : Michelle Marie |
Dave’s so out of touch with reality Comment from : Jake Gentry |
Completely wrong about most of this Schools use the FAFSA for their own need-based grants and merit-based grants for middle class people Comment from : Sean Benak |
I’ve never disagreed with him on anything except today FILL OUT THAT FAFSA! It’s helped my “poor” self Sooo many times Do it!!!! Comment from : Perla A |
Do you know where ee live sir? Most of us are not able to afford collage, but want out of the struggle!! Comment from : Autumn Martin |
TERRIBLE advice Dave You need to learn more about FAFSA There isn’t JUST PELL grants Comment from : Kim Asaro |
I was just excepted into a college in Quebec Canada I have 40 of 90 credits from here in the US that will transfer there I found out I might get Federal student loans that I can use in Canada The tuition is cheaper there but I don't have quite the money I already have a BA degree in Computer Science and working on a second degree in French I feel with both degrees from the US and one from Canada I would have a big leverage to be able to work anywhere and make more money Comment from : 2380Shaw |
Pay taxes but dont take advantage of government assistance for college? Horrible advice! Comment from : William Gettings |
FASFA is not a tool poor adults are using to send their kids to college, it is a tool their kids are using to get out of their parents situation ❗️❗️ Comment from : Sheyanne McKinney |
The thing is, I paid for my education and contributed for my kids' schooling too I voluntarily contribute to my old schools and their scholarship funds, but federal aid comes from resources they took without asking me And now that I took care of my own, they use these aid programs to pay for other people's kids Is that really moral? Comment from : Michael Woods |
Fafsa is not only for poor people Fafsa is also made for middle class people who can afford to live comfortably, but cannot afford to take their three children to college It’s kind of ignorant for multimillionaires to brag about their kids going to college debt free because guess what, dad can pay for it Comment from : Pitufo |
Dave you’re a millionaire, we get it you cash flowed your kids’ college But that’s not the reality for most Americans Fasfa is necessary Get real Comment from : Alice Azzun |
This was eye openingbrThank you Dave! Comment from : celia olarte |
I grew up poor, so I got the free ride for my associates,I’m using this to my advantage while working This is saving my life Comment from : Shucky ducky Quack quack |
6/17/19Well paid parents with good jobs would rather BUY A NEW CAR than help pay for theirbrkid to get thru college with NO DEBT! Comment from : Eileene Clark |
why are you not eligible for any type of scholarships if you don't fill out the FAFsa??? Comment from : mimi7914 |
The most messed up thing about FAFSA is that you have to report your parents income until you’re 24, even if you’re independent for tax purposes and otherwise Many students ARE broke and get nothing because of what their father that they haven’t seen for years makes, etc FAFSA helps poor students who have poor parents, but not poor students in general People are falling through the cracks all the time with FAFSA You can be 100 supporting yourself in pennies and get nothing What a joke Comment from : Mikayla Woolley |
Fill out FAFSA since colleges give grants even if is not a lot Our son went to a public state school They gave everyone at least 45000 per semester to say they give aid to everyone We made 96,000 and still got 1,200 We did not qualify for PELL My job gave 3,500 scholarships and they wanted the FAFSA They gave over 300 scholarships Comment from : busy mom |
They are programs that allow the household income be up to 200k Comment from : Yahaira Florentino |
Fill out your fafsa! Many colleges require it for merit based scholarships! Comment from : Jillian McAllister |
Most schools require that you fill out a FAFSA Comment from : Jim Roscovius |
There are Pell grants and Cal grants At least in California Comment from : HueTubeR |
I’m curious to know what Dave’s GPA wasI don’t think working 40 hours a week while being a STEM major would work for most unless your really smart and don’t have to study at all Especially if your in a major like biology and using that to get into med school, dental school etc you need a high gps on top of it I know I worked part time when I was a undergrad bio major and that was tough I was always studying, and doing lab reports I didn’t even have time to party on The weekends since that’s when I worked my part time job Comment from : Zach Walters |
Either way college is not affordable Too many students take out way too much debt to attend and that's the real problem College is just too expensive Comment from : John Dyer |
It's for State aide too, not just Pell Grants You are penalized by saving Dave is so wrong on all accounts here Comment from : teeduck |
I'm attending a community college and I'm literally getting paid to go there, since I get a $2900 refund from both the fed and state gov each semester Comment from : victor garcia |
Comment from : Turnpost2552 |
The money I got from FAFSA was enough to cover my entire tuition for the first 4 years I was in college The last year when I was finishing up my BSN degree I was already a nurse so I paid my way through that last year myself But I could not have imagined going through college without my Pell Grants Comment from : Simply Fit & Healthy |
If you or your folks make a lot Applying for fafsa just means taking loans Comment from : Knockout Investing |
I read it does not matter how much you make, filling out the FAFSA aids in what scholarships the specific colleges will consider for you, and to estimate the family contribution, which is required for many applications I have done Comment from : Nayeli Arredondo |
💖💖💖 Comment from : Rosa Bawono Wenas |
Wow Dave really?brI am debt free now following your plan that believe in so much MY mother honestly couldnt afford college for all of us and FAFSA helped us out tremendously No student loan debts I thought you would appreciate that We never lied or cheated the government Thank God Im able to follow your baby steps so I could save for college for my children My mom is listening to you now wishing she knew of you when she was raising us to make make smart decisions Comment from : Shermaine |
I think Dave did spend time listening to the real concern of the caller BUT ALSO many commenters didn't get Dave's point brSo all of us are confusion LolbrbrDave is not bashing people From doing fafsa,brHe's bashing the people that lie to get some aidbrbrWhen he says "is for poor people" he is not saying it in a derogatory way brHe feels some people are taking the $$ away from the real people in need, if you are tricking the system by making it look you are poorbrThat's why he made the nursing home examplebrbrAnyways brHe should of saidbr"Let them file with an open mind, and be blessed either way" Comment from : Taga Way |
What if you can't get your parents to get the taxes from the IRS? Comment from : Autumn Maynard |
Thanks to the FAFSA, I've gotten close to 20k a year in grants Combine that with my merit and private scholarships, and private school has become less expensive than public school FAFSA would have given me a lot less if I went public and I'd miss out on those merit scholarships private schools can afford Comment from : Jacob G |
Take dull enrollment where you can take college credit classes for free Comment from : israel arechiga |
Absolutely you need to fill out the FAFSA It doesn’t matter how much you’re family makes, you definitely need to fill out the FAFSA if you need Pell Grants and other financial aid I’m sorry, but I disagree with Dave on this one Comment from : John Danielson |
