What about general mechanical engineering? We do some fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and material science stuff There are many people with a bachelor's in mechanical engineering who went into petroleum or material science Based on that, wouldn't you say that getting a more diverse major like mechanical engineering would be more beneficial since there is no telling how industries can change in the future?

I'm pretty deep into my cs degree now and I'm pretty sure the vast majority of people will not be prepared to actually go for this degree without extremely lucky financial circumstances, and even if they are able to it's a such a hard degree because of the deep levels of intuitive logic force you to thrust off emotion basically That is something the vast majority are unable to actually do or desire to do, along with the natural affinity you need to progress at a reasonable pace, this really isn't for 99 percent of people, and tons of times you're going to find your life defined by your homework with nothing but they future as a prize, I'm sure many other stem majors are similar but go ahead and skim an algorithms book and see how much you actually desire to study it
