I'm a bit late, but I want to have some words herebrx86 has almost a decade of stagnation, the first half from AMD and the second from Intel Let's look back a little bitbrCore-per-core, how much faster is the i9-13900K over the i7-5960X? About 24 timesbrHow much faster is the FX-9590 vs Ryzen 9 7950X? About 32 timesbrHow about the Apple A7 vs A16? Almost 7 timesbrAnd the custom Krait core in the Snapdragon 800 vs the Cortex-X3? Hohoho 10 timesbrThat stagnation is putting x86 in an even more intense competition The fun has just begun

The amount of power that Nvidia is requiring Is insane! 600w Look guys I know you like 4k but think of the earth! For one damn second:( I you know we take a lot of power but Jesus I feel like 600w on a graphic card alone is a crime

Look I respect the love for tower PC's Tho I prefer laptops, and even handheld PC's I noticed that in a big tower They said you can upgrade it without changing everything Well not anymore If Nvidia releases a 50 series with even! More power to hog, you gonna need a new motherboard, PSU and probably storage and ram X86 It's needed! Until the end of times I hate apple, but the Towers are in danger, coz I can't justify buying it if your plan is the save space, and not upgrade for a long time Coz that's not the case anymore

Dustin Satterfield
I think a middle ground can be found between fully integrated and modular systems Possibly one where CPUs are still socketed and ram slots still exist, but the CPU die is much larger and contains its own integrated memory and GPU, with the slots acting as a second level of memory similar to how page files work so that there is some level of upgradability, while keeping the main benefits of an SOC Having high speed PCIE slots available may also mean the return of tech like crossfire/sli, as with a powerful enough SOC I can imagine it being possible to more effectively manage slave devices, as long as there is software support Honestly just using ARM on a socketed chip would likely net a huge performance bump as long as applications can be properly ported and optimized ARM is incredibly powerful, it's just been overshadowed by AMD x86-64 because despite it's efficiency, there was still headroom in the older architecture we are currently using, so why go through the extreme pain if switching everything over to a very different architecture if you don't need to?

First off, the presenter/speaker - one of LTT's best I'll even allow him to jibber-jabber about jibber-jabber and watch the entire video Yeah that goodbrbrThe future of PCs is not going to cloud/servers Think for a minute how long the client-server model has been around for (since the 70's) If something can be put into the cloud, it would already be there There's just not enough intercontinental bandwidth for this to service the ever-expanding customer base Just take video streaming services for example Why would these entities even bother with technologies/topologies such as a CDN (Content Delivery Network) where they cache the frequently accessed server data to servers local to the customer base that they are serving? Sure, the value of money is going down and the price of goods are going up but this doesn't apply to digital services due to the extreme competition in the space Price over time needs to come down even - all the while the demand just increases People may store their files online (photos and vids for example) but there's still that need to download them and get a local back up where it applies (for redundancy/peace of mind, security and accessibility in general) Centralizing compute power and storage brings in more problems than it solves In the era where privacy and data ownership gets increasingly important, that's the whole cloud gaming stopped on its tracks People that's pushing this in the corporate world (looking at Windows 365) need to wake up or get fired Gaming DLCs needs to be decentralized - badly and stat This will give a chance to have the true ownership back to the masses

Right1994
This won't happen The reason is simple: PricebrbrApple archieves those performance per watt numbers by just using pure die space to compensate and die space is getting more and more expensive Apple can do that because, and lets be honest here, they are only really competing with themselvesbrbrThe reason other manufacturers go for higher clock speeds instead of increased IPCs is because die space is expensive and they need to compete with other manufacturers They can choose: Higher IPC, which costs them more and thus makes their products either less profitable or less competitive for a given price, or higher clocks, which "only" increases power drawbrbrAn APU that can actually rival modern x86+dGPU-Systems, at least right now, needs to be a lot bigger when it comes to die size and that's not going to change any time soonbrJust look at the M2 Ultra It gets handily beaten by a NVidia RTX 4090 and a AMD Ryzen 9 7950X system The M2 Ultra has 134 billion transistors, with the 4090 and the 7950X combined only running at about 93 billion The CPU part is anywhere between 3 and 25 faster, with the GPU being 150 faster in OpenCL Compute (in gaming the difference is probably even larger)brbrOr in short: While I can see x86-64 loosing out to ARM and RISC-V in the long term, I cannot see the dGPU leaving with itbrNo manufacturer would just "eat" the additional cost for a more efficient system when the performance is lagging behind I mean, Intel is still selling CPUs and those draw a lot more power than comparable AMD offerings Nobody bats an eye If they instead would draw, say, 40 less power than AMD but lagged behind by 20 in performance, almost nobody would buy Intel

Intel recently proposed dropping all the old stuff from the architecture in what they call X86-S which is probably motivated by the need to reclaim the die space, lower power consumption and render any competitor that uses their expired/soon-to-expire patents immediately obsolete

Yeah you forgot to make a section about the pricebrPCs as we know them will never die as long as they are so much cheaper than the stuff Apple producesbrbrDollar for dollar, PCs still beat Apple in all aspects, and that is all that matters to most peoplebrI ain't paying $4000 for a brick that I will have to discard completely once the thermal paste cracks or an accidental hit makes a component failbrbrMaybe for the super top high end users or for people who do not have to pay their own hardware, like professionals in a company, it is worth itbrBut I can ensure you that I would rather go back to playing in 144p than paying $4000 for a brick
Comment from : Dr Plasma

Zerato
the vast majority of average pc users dont have the knowledge, interest or time to custom build their pc Especially in emerging economies There is great incentive to get as many users online as possible and for those populations ARM seems like a great solution But it also does open up more opportunities for user exploitation Also compared to phones, pc's have a wider range of use cases so i asume there will always be a need for at least some customization
Comment from : Zerato

We are way past the point of diminishing returns for enthusiast builds There is no reason to have a high refresh 4k game with Ray tracing when the games are optimized for way more hardware

Eric Halverson
I have to disagree with this video simply for the fact that a huge amount of profit will indeed be lost and a lot of people will start making their own variants and selling them to people A lot of people don't want something that is toss away and buy another one, hence they will just stop buying computers and use what they have already You can believe whatever you want but it could very well crash the market of computers This move would also be a way of controlling how much power people can have
Comment from : Eric Halverson

I doubt it, they make far too much money from enthusiasts Their profit will cut in half when ppl cant buy the lastest whateverbrbrThey've tried arm and risc before, it didnt go well

everything is getting cheaper and worse Win XP vs WIn 11, TV Shows in 1960's and 70's 30-40+ episodes per season, 90's-2000's'ish - 20-24 episodes per season, old days computers were fun, these days - the is almost hostile to it's user ( Microsoft)

Ian Kelly
Looks like a fairly bleak future Surely they will never be as good as a separate CPU and GPU Also there is the fact that you can upgrade your good old custom pc when a faster CPU or GPU comes along without buying a whole new device If this is going to be the way forward developers are going to have to start scaling their games back instead of constantly pushing the envelope Personally I'd rather have full control over my hardware as opposed to a locked down device tied to some manufacturer who has control over what updates I can or cannot download and thus the lifespan of my 'most likely expensive' machine Yes, I have an M1 Mac mini as well as my trusty self built gaming rig so I know somewhat what I'm talking about
Comment from : Ian Kelly

Here's the thing My £200 recycled xeon sff workstation (music) for me is doing everything I need it to With the benefit that if the hard drive lunches itself, I can just slip the clone in and continue Ditto Ram, Ditto Absolutely anything on the board Couldn't buy a Mac mini if I wanted to because I still have windows only programs that need to run And If I can't change the HDD & add Ram if I want I'm not interested

Engineering Vranyo
Im missing the part where this really gets in the way of builders - we have a chip, fan, gpu today; tomorrow well have some universal blade chip We dont customize those today, just drop $7-2000 If these start getting sold direct to consumer, they will have more variants that range cpu speed and gpu speed, just like the ram Ok, so if it dies youre replacing all of those SOC components at once So? The power savings along can amortize that cost And thats what I’d call out; all things being equal, bigger chips mean more work for the fab They use a LOAD of water to produce, energy, bla bla And without comparing properly, one may say ‘oh no, climate!’ But the reality is that 4070, ballistix ram and cpu, require more and dont benefit as greatly from scaling It may be easier to think of SOC as a second motherboard-like component We dont customize them - we just buy the chipset and features we want We still customize pic cards for video crap, storage preferences based on need Batteries can be smaller, machines can be lighter, and the machines shrink requiring less material for each case If this wasnt advantageous, it would go the way of itanium

Of course companies are always going to try and shut down competition and control a market, doesn't mean we should let them If it wasn't for people not letting them in the first place, we would have never got the current PC space of being able to pick and choose between different parts from different companies in the first place

MS
Without even watching the videoclip, based on the title alone that seems very unlikely Removing the ability to change individual components like the cpu, gpu is like motherboard of a laptop brbrWhy would you want that exclusively on a desktop computer aswell? Given that the market is moving towards integration it makes sense to some degree to move some of the market there But there is also an indication as you know to move to more upgradability This to make the product more green and sustainable which this wouldn't give if you at the same time want to keep the market running at the same pace brbrUnless there is a clearer advantage technically to "glew" everything together like Apple, and only a market incentive for short gain, it won't happen is my takebrbrOf course in the long run it is going to be integrated But it will take some time

It's been obvious to me for a while Custom PC building has peaked and we'll all switch to console gaming whether we like it or not There's been diminishing returns on PC hardware upgrades for at least 10 years It's become increasingly boring while performance plateaued, prices went up, heat went up, availability went down RGB-everything is the death throws of this hobby
