Without the XRF machine you're down to looks really The reason the bar is thicker is it's made of a less dense filler (copper for the most part) If they're smart, that filler will be Tungsten, which has an almost identical density as Gold, and can be used to core a fake and produce an indistinguishable difference in thickness while maintaining the correct weight So don't rely too heavily on the thickness of the bar

the general rule of thumb I go by having worked at a precious metals dealer buying and selling to customers is NEVER to buy from unreputable online or in person sources Always buy from a reputable and licensed seller of bullion and a partner of the mints I'm not surprised these are fake because it was bought off of a random seller on a Australian version of Craigslist Don't buy your stuff from Ebay, Craigslist, Gumtree, Kijiji etcAlways buy direct from a licensed and reputable dealer either in person or directly from their website

The fake ones look gold plated they're actually too shiny mirror-like now I don't have a ton of gold bars from Perth but I have a couple and they're more of a matte gold finish I always thought the matte finish was from the press I didn't know they acid wash them to get that Even so Plated gold always looks to shiny u can tell difference between plated jewelry and real 14k because to most people the plated looks prettier

One thing you didn't mention at all was the weight Gold is significantly heavier than copper and the other bulk elements contained in the fake bar So couldn't you just simply weigh the bars and see how much they weigh? The real bar that is 50 grams would obviously show 50 grams plus a couple more for the packaging, but the fake bar would weigh much less than 50 grams
