While this comment is now 10 years old as I watched it, I feel that I should make this comment… my purpose is to demonstrate just how fast computer technology has progressed since these boards were made (and, yes, I was around back in ‘63…) I watched this on my iPad computer which is 024 inch (635 mm) I’m still reeling from the implication

Jumpstar
I have seen similar boards or very similar ones, either at Radio Rally meetups in the 1970' and also in Computer museums There is a very nice museum in The Netherlands that used to have some examples I believe At some point I had a computer systems design manual that covered many exotic architectures from the era, sadly long since gone I think it was either Wiley or Prentice Hall Just did a search and found a very nice blog post on Ken Shirriff's blog with a lot of info and plenty of links relating to the LVDC designsbrbrIt really is amazing to see the board, and crazy to think about the design and engineering that went into itbrbrThank you for showing it to us and a very nice channel you have here All the best

Paul V
is there any piece of tech from it, that is sine qua non for the entire board here? and who made it where did it came from? I wonder if we can trace some of the key techs that made the difference and where do they lead
Comment from : Paul V

John Kormos
How Impossibly Cool-that you have this incredible piece of history!! Fran, your deep knowledge with respect to this and the nature of what it is that you hold in your hands, transcends any notion of entertainment You are expounding on actual digital history As someone who has taught computer science, mathematics and such at several universities, you make this stuff the kind of fun I wish I could have exposed my students to!!

Ken Russell
All these comments commenting on this computer board, which is no doubt history, but failing to see that you are soooo hot, especially with the dark hair and classic nerdy glasses Perhaps I wouldn't be feeling so amorous had i not seen your vid with swamp ash tele, complete with benders And to think you built it! That is where you had me, hands down!! You see, I am sitting here staring at a tele I am building for the surgeon who did my back surgery, and I am thinking "I don't know crap about science" but this girl makes it interesting, and she loves Teles!!!!
Comment from : Ken Russell

Stronger & Wiser
They say we lost the technology to go back to the moon Maybe we need to slap that back into our rockets and we would be A-OK again?

Nicholas Maude
How is your LVDC project going, Fran?
Comment from : Nicholas Maude

By Wire 1964
Hi Fran,brI worked for IBM in the early seventies, and a good friend and colleague of mine worked on the LVDC at Cape Kennedy He said he knew they were serious when they brought a cot into his office BTW, the flip chip technology is called controlled collapse chip connection, or C4 for short
Comment from : By Wire 1964

Majik Glustik
Here you gobrAt&t tech channel is for youbrRope memory Who made all of this?brThe TELEPHONE COMPANYbrNo ca-cabrWestern Electric IS a major part of the NASA structurebrAt&t tech channel has videos about how these parts were made They should; George Kupzack is waiting to walk you through the advancements that made the bell system as stout as it was Satellites were first constructed and launched at NASA facilities by whom?brWESTERN ELECTRICbrLook & see 😘

Bo Huggabee
looks like a processor that you could control how many threads which would be kinda pointless but i'm not a expert on that stuff
Comment from : Bo Huggabee

effexon
Those 400 billion dollars spent on apollo program in 1960s were possibly best spent money ever by government, so much industries and companies and tech superiority, research progress from that not even universities have that effect despite quite big funding through decades
Comment from : effexon

effexon
Were soviets ahead in electronics during that 1957-1969 period or did they just rely on "manual tech" more? 1965 Korolev died so that was there hindering development, other than that they had pretty solid rockets early 1960s
Comment from : effexon

Mike Rootz
Hello Fran, I worked at a large aerospace company for 43 years one of my best memories was working on small circuit boards out of the F15 RADAR I have spent many hours soldering(repairing) Flat Packs Yes, the boards were plated through and had at least 8 layers BUT when the board broke due to flexing or heat issues, the plated through holes(traces) broke and I had to solder TINY jumpers to various points on the board to pick up the missing tracesThis was back in the 80s It's fascinating that the technology was for this type of computing was invented for the space program 15 years earlier AND we still use the same technology
Comment from : Mike Rootz

Xan Bell
How have I not seen your channel sooner, you are so awesome

J Mason
such a hottie with that dark hair!
Comment from : J Mason

Coda Alive
Nasa found out tiny connections between SMD start growing "whiskers", they kind of look like a crystals but are actually pretty conductive which makes them dangerous because of shorts, unwanted connections, etc Even satelites have fallen to earth because of this I'm not sure what they use now, maybe different solder composition
Comment from : Coda Alive

Jaroslav Henzely
Oh wow, I'm impressed 👀👀👍

Ricardo Bonelle
What is the meaning of this video?
Comment from : Ricardo Bonelle

Andrew Lohmann
The corners of the tracks are now 45' to reduce the inductance by a few tens of nano-henry's I used to track boards manually using crepe tape and scalpel There were 2:1 sticky IC footprints, dots for vias These were stuck to a clear stable film and I did two layers by using two films plus film for the silk-screen
Comment from : Andrew Lohmann

Nevin Loop
hi fran nevin from calf like the stuff had a tip you probably know the halogen lamp puts out radiation that melts salder

Comment from : Christopher Lawley

charles vanberg
Fran, I graduated in 1969 BSEE specialized in logic design A technique that was used at the time was to use logic nand, nor, and invert gates on the PCB and wire them into a functions like Flop flops, counters, shift registers, etc on the backplane The board you show is likely of this type Hard to know without a schematic I know that the Cray supercomputer of that era was built in this way
Comment from : charles vanberg

Cliff Ransome
Anyone ever tell you your hot?

Woogoo336
It's amazing how fast technology moves when the stakes are high The space program and even war pushed technology to the cutting edge but that hasn't happened in a very long time I wonder if we are lagging behind were we could be now

Eric Girard
Wow, I hope you follow Curious Marc and his Apolo AGC recent restorationbrSo little is known about the LVDC, thanksbrAlways great Fran!
Comment from : Eric Girard

Ric Cortez
Yes, but will it make a good distortion pedal? All kidding aside, how did you get your hands on such an interesting piece?
Comment from : Ric Cortez

Carl Franz
Where in the $#@ did you get your hands on that?
Comment from : Carl Franz

Buena Ventura Life
I realize this video has been around a while, it is nice to find it The Saturn's were the heavy lift for big payloads I worked on some of those and am happy to see you show one of the boards of that era It is important to talk about the durability of the build The vibration and stress of a lift off could be catastrophic for many materials When you look at the board you see special soldering and heavy duty chips If that board was a spare, it had undergone a lot of test time to ensure the parts and build could survive launch You have a very special piece of history
Comment from : Buena Ventura Life

Bernd Grabitz
I agree , this was very modern: surface mount, multi layer
Comment from : Bernd Grabitz

MGC
no entiendo quien se cree que la ciencia es de mojigatos
