As New Zealander I find it extremely annoying that we have had previous governments that have screwed up the economy and taken us from one of the wealthiest countries in the world to middle The current government also have overspend and been corrupt Hopefully in the future we can get back on track Comment from : Michael Atkinson |

I've lived in NZ since 2007 and actually became a citizen in 2016, renouncing my US citizenship It is indeed the best country in the world in which to live, and the natives ALMOST speak English! BUT, if those other countries in Europe and South America try to replicate our road to prosperity, I do not think it will work The difference is scale: there are only about 5,000,000 Kiwis, and those countries you mention have dramatically larger and more diverse populations They also have large cities and urban populations and their attendant problems, which would make many of the proposed reforms VERY hard to implement Think about it: Madrid has 30 more people than our whole country, in one compressed area! So, all you other people, come here and enjoy the great weather and the fabulous countryside and the safe and friendly atmosphere Even move here, if you qualify (it's not too easy), but don't think you can easily copy the changes that have made this country great! A few people here have mentioned that there is a housing crisis, which there is and homelessness which is also true However, the main thing is that there are many people here working towards sustainable solutions so the future is not as bleak as they might realise The government is now funding the Housing First model to go out and find homeless people and people living in emergency housing and to put them into warm, dry, safe, permanent homes If this is something that really concerns you, you are welcome to come and help us I got my job by googling homelessness in NZ and going from there The housing crisis is also real, but there seems to be a growing national consensus (especially among the younger generation), that the government needs to honour the treaty that was signed in 1840 by most Maori tribes and the British Crown One significant change I hope to see in the next few years is that regulations will be freed up to allow residential homes to built more easily on collectively owned Maori land as well as the vast tracts of council owned land in Auckland which is currently being used for a small minority to play golf (and is being subsidised by tax payers to the tune of millions of dollars every year) The answers are out there and we're continuing to move forward I just wanted to offer up a positive (but realistic) take on some of the genuine concerns expressed below Comment from : Jason Penny |

Hhmm, the discourse has shifted a bit in 5 years I'm sure there is plenty to criticise about the way things were prior to the monumental changes that came about in the 80's and 90's However, I hope we can zoom out and look at the bigger picture to see what the results of those changes have been on a macro and micro scale - stagnant wage growth for decades when compared to the rising cost of living and property prices, a widening gap between the nations wealthiest and poorest, erosion of the middle class, further concentration of wealth, influence and power in the hands of an elite few, declining biodiversity and a collapsing natural environment Definitely need a more nuanced analysis of the policies enacted by the 4th Labour and 4th National Governments, a deepdive into the immediate short term benefits vs the long term trends which are seen today as largely detrimental would be great! Unfortunately the Labour government has gone out of its way to bring back Moldunism (state control of everything) The state service has increased, health and education results are terrible Literacy rates have fallen to 70!!! I have to get private health insurance because I can't even get into a public hospital and why would even want to go to one! Doomed to repeat our mistakes over and over again Comment from : Kiwi Busa |

Yet look at NZ now we have no govt assets all owned off shore the banks all off shore billions a year sent off shore NZ now in more debt than ever thanks to Jacinda more child poverty abuse than ever before more suicides more homeless families living in cars Price of housing still 10x incomes And govtbringing more regulation on our farmers and taxed than pre 84 Also Rodger Douglas got rid of tradeschool so early 2000s we had what's called leaky homes And I could hit you with way more facts that show you that the Liberal way hasn't worked out for Joe average The only positive is NZ being the last country to be settled wether that's Maori 800 yrs ago or Birts 250 yrs ago Comment from : Colin Cameron |

Lots of miss information The Rogernomics era of neoliberal so called reforms has left terrible scars on NZ society and ecology and it still continues to this day The NZ landscape is an ecological disaster The apparent beauty is almost entirely based on invasive weeds and very damaging exotic fauna It is a con job This eulogy for Rogernomics is not shared by all The inequities are far worse today The abuse of the environment by farmers who captured the regulatory institutions as a result of the gutting of the civil service Education levels are actually not so great The local school board model just mean the rich got richer and the poor schools got screwed The opening up of the boarders has meant that there is now almost no industry in NZ The only industries left are tourism and agriculrure which has an insatiable appetite for low wage workers who change bed sheets and serve coffee or pick apples or milk cows Vast numbers of low wage immigrants have been imported The brain drain of the 1980s is more like a brain tsunami now brSo , although NZ has managed some things it has done it at great cost Some of the apparent benefits are really a sort of Ponzi scheme which creates benefits now but expects the next generations to pay dearly Comment from : Andrew Paterson |
|
I'm glad I'm in NZ but things are corrupt asf here They kill our children, our old folk with no regard for the law or human rights If you pop up too high they'll take you out and the taxes just keep getting ridiculous And don't get me into the conflicts of interest in regards to politics and business They are constantly poisoning us 1030 is dropped on us at around 25kg per hectare It keeps increasing yet the pests are still rampantmost of them are sitting in the beehive attempting the fleece as much money for themselves as possible The list is endless at how corrupt our govt is We have pedophiles involved with the running our countrythe personal crimes and silencing of the people is endless by these criminals Comment from : Kathleen McKay |

Instead of actively engaging in the reason why New Zealand's economy started to collapse throughout the 60s and 70s, a large part being our largest export products were wool and sheep meat, the former's price crashing somewhat to do with the movement towards synthetic fabrics globally and due to some of the major purchasers of New Zealand wool (like the US armed forces) having less demand for it, and a another large part being one of our largest trading partners entering the EEC and decimating our export industries, both of which - when in conjunction with rising oil prices during the shocks in the 70s - led to the New Zealand Dollar crashing in terms of purchasing power globally and thus we weren't able to buy foreign goods which our standard of living relied upon any more, this video propagandises for largely rejected economic visions and analyses of the 1980s and early 1990sbrbrThe large levels of taxation and government regulation had been in effect from the First Labour Government in the 1930s and onward, and those self-same built the robust economy of the late 50sbrbrThis is libertarian garbage which ignores that the deregulation and privatisation of the economy in the mid-80s to mid-90s caused New Zealand's standard of living to continue to fall for all but a few until the late-90s when reaction started to change course again away from Rogernomics and RuthanasiabrbrThe amount of people in poor households - taken as earning 60 of the median income or less - went from 9 of the population in 1984 to 23 in 1994 ( archivestatsgovtnz/browse_for_stats/snapshots-of-nz/nz-social-indicators/Home/Standard20of20living/pop-low-incomesaspx)brbrIf anything, the cautionary tale of New Zealand in the 60s and 70s is that it was an economy reliant on too few trading partners exporting too few products and was thus beholden to fluctuations in both the trading partners willingness to conduct business with them, and the prices of those few export goods It was diversification of both these things rather than deregulation and privatisation which started to reverse the crashing living standards Comment from : David Parfitt |

Kia ora Visual Politik EN, thanks for the video, I know it's really old, but I just wanted to mention you got a series of things wrong in this video and it is pretty concerning, Aotearoa did not benefit from NeoLiberal Politics in the slightest our dept rate did not drop after it was introduced in 1985, it just became privatised, in fact it doubled in the same year and kept doubling until 2017 when the coalition government began to reintroduce some of our Social Democratic laws As a result of neoliberal politics in Aotearoa we had one of the highest child poverty rates in the OECD, unemployment tripled, we have the highest suicide rates in the world, we are facing a housing crisis we previously weren't and we are now facing a meth epidemic Comment from : Michael Pudney |

The government let too many people into the country and caused a housing crisis Comment from : M Laffey |

In actual fact, during the Labour governments of 1984-1990 (David Lange being Prime Minister, and Roger Douglas of "Rogernomics" fame being the Minister of Finance for most of this time) unemployment more than doubled from over 100,000 to well over 200,000 Not big numbers by world standards, but we only had 32 million people here at the time brbrThe election campaign of 1990 was unusual as it seemed that neither of the major parties wanted to win - things were so bad that no-one wanted to clear up the mess By the time I left for the UK in late-1991, the Jim Bolger led National government had destroyed worker's rights, and admitted that unemployment was at 24 !!! When I returned in late-2006, things had improved so much, it was hard to believe it was the same countrybrbrThe John Key/Bill English led National governments of 2008-2017 were much loved by economists etc, and did get the budget back to surplus - but at huge social costs Their main idea for economic growth was to allow immigration to run rampant and not spend anything on infrastructure - house prices going through the roof making it impossible for people saving for a house deposit to ever be able to catch up, crowded roads hospitals schools etcbrbrHere we are in 2020 Many of us only have jobs because of a government wage subsidy paid to Covid-19 affected businesses - but the subsidy will end about a month before the election And of course, due to the effects of Covid-19, many tourism related businesses have already folded and those that are left will depend on NZers traveling domestically - a difficult situation given job insecurity, low wages, & high costs in NZ Comment from : Leon Theaker |

I just looked up Purchasing Power Parity GDP for New Zealand compared to the rest of the world They are #32 and have $42,000 per capita, which puts them BELOW Spain and most other European countries The US is #10 at $67,000 High wages are not that great to have if your prices are also extremely high, thats why one needs to look at Purchase Power Parity when comparing countries wages and standards of living Simon only reads from a teleprompter what some one puts before him and mostly it is not well researched Comment from : Derek Marlowe |
|
It has some nice scenery but Auckland is lackluster and rather boring Otherwise there are only a smattering of small towns and once you get out of town most of the roads are gravel and so there is really nowhere to go when you get bored with the small town you live in You can go hiking or camping but that gets old after a while Simon talks about how high the salaries are but, as usual, he has never been to most of the places he talks about and thinks he is an expert New Zealand prices in store are at least double or triple the US prices I shopped for some sports clothing and a simple T shirt was $68 and shoes were double what I usually pay The country is a long long way from everywhere except Australia and it can cause feelings of isolation and depression for many who move there Comment from : Derek Marlowe |
|
I'm a Kiwi who has lived in two other countries and have visited many more I'm glad I live in NZ again now, especially under the Covid-19 crisis NZ has a lot going for it Comparatively we are a less corrupt, better educated, freer and fairer society than most, but the gap between rich and poor is getting wider, and we're not as green as we advertise Our tax system was simplified and our highest income tax rate is now 33, but we have a Goods and Services Tax (GST) of 15 on almost everything We need it, because most of our social services, including universal healthcare, and infrastructure are tax-funded NZ is a social democracy, a free market economy with a social bent, and generally a great country to live in, but like every nation it's better for some than others, and there is always room for improvement Comment from : Margaret P |
|
Misleading video clips You would think those protests related to what the commentator was talking about, but I suspect they relate to protests again rugby tours and Maori land protests I don't recall any economic protests of that nature Comment from : Margaret P |
