My top tips, brIf you have a hot water cylinder, only heat when your going to use it Saved 250 a yearbrbrIf you have a uninsulated hot water cylinder, buy a jacket for it or upgrade to an insulated one brbrBuy an air fryer- not wasting extra electric heating a large oven to cook smaller itemsbrbrSchedule heating only in morning and evening and boost heating if neededbrbrIf you can heat your water with electric or gas/oil, heat with Gas/oil as cheaper brbrInsulate coper pipes in your boiler roombrbrChange to LED lights as pays for themselves in about 4-6 months brbrUse curtainsbrbrClean radiators of dust Comment from : Aaron Moat |

I looked at the energy meter the other morning and it showed 100watts With everything off? This equated to £312per annum Decided to do a survey of every item permanently connected to the power I noted down 34 items continuously using power This ranged from outdoor flood lights with pir sensors, usb sockets, Hive hubs and receivers, computer and printers, alarm system, and WiFi controlled lamps etc Will now be having a close look to see what I don’t need Great vid Maybe those pipes around the tank require some insulation😀 Comment from : Mark Gilder |

Excellent tips I already do all of them around the kitchen, as well as the laundry brA few other tips:br- in general, boil only the required amount of water, as boiling water is bvery/b energy hungry,br- always cover your pans with a lid, it helps increasing temperature and thus cook faster for free, also learn to use a pressure cooker (with only the minimum amount of water) especially to cook veggies,br- induction stoves are more efficient and practical than other types of stoves However they are usually overpowered Not much need to use more than 2kW, so if a stove is above that, don't use it at full power (too much power can crack cast iron vessels),br- invest in LED light bulbs Not only they last much longer, but they are also vastly more efficient than the restbr- my kitchen is usually cooler than the other rooms Because there is not much reason to heat it anyway, the fridge has to work less hard if the kitchen is 3-5°C cooler, and lower temps are better for food conservation,br- close doors to trap heat in living rooms (very effective one in my experience),br- take showers rather than use the bath tub, you economise on water and therefore on hot water Comment from : lolilol lolilol |

Oven? What is this oven you speak of?brA toaster oven or an air fryer uses far less energy and both heat up very quickly, a toaster oven can heat up in 1 minute for every hundred degrees Fahrenheit (377 degrees Celcius)brbrThe only time to use a full size oven is if you have to cook something really big Comment from : Random Chance |
|
Ventilation is vital,do not seal your house particularly shower room When oven cooking, when cooked crack open the oven and let residual heat in to kitchen Make sure any food is cooked , particularly things like turkey Use a cooking thermometer There is really no need to buy tons of food to store in a freezer, just buy fresh food and maybe a bit of frozen in the fridge People who live more than twenty miles from a shop might need to fill a freezer, but most don't Comment from : Jo Allan |

Instead of keeping those vents open and wasting lots of energy, close them and get a dehumidifier or 2 YES, those things use electricity, but I'm sure the heat loss would cost a lot more than that electricity, especially when it's really cold outsidebrplus, dry air has a lower heat capacity, making it easier to heat up than wet air and the waste heat from the dehumidifier also helps keep the house warm Comment from : MrX MrY |

Tip :Buy polystyrene sheets from a DIY store and after putting aluminium sheets behind the radiator( again bought from DIY store made for the heatbr reflection - not useless baking foil!) The polystyrene sheets can deflect radiator heat that would otherwise be lost to the windows - into the room, just by a 45 degree angle from radiator top into the room The heat in the room can gain 1 degree that would otherwise be LOST DON'T HAVE THE POLYSTYRENE SHEET TOUCHING THE HOT RADIATOR THOUGH- HAVE AT LEAST 5 CM CLEARANCE BETWEEN BOTH AS OBVIOUSLY THE POLYSTYRENE COULD MELT IF IN PROLONGED CONTACT WITH HOT RADIATOR Comment from : Rob Harris |
|

Long term saving, eg a 66 quid bill for Sept and Oct Get solar panels Saves loads of money on washing, cooker, dryer, but we use a tornado at 1kw pH Also a good tip, boil a kettle twice a day, fill flasks with excess water for tea coffee until you run out Ppl use the kettle alot, less use saves that 6p per use Also those with Combi boiler use the tap hot to fill kettle, it's clean water and that should save some long term pennies But with all said, the proxy war is being used to cause this Govt lead crisis, they've got to get our coffers legally and that's why everything is higher in price, it also pushes ppl green, but green resources such as solar are up at least 30 Comment from : paul mills |

I live in a Council flat with no outdoor drying facilities I have to dry my washing on a clothes horse in my kitchen I’m now having to put my heating on in order to dry my washing But I always have the kitchen window open slightly to allow the moisture to escape I’ve never had problems with mould anywhere in my flat, including my bathroom, which has no window or ventilation at all I put a box of moisture absorbing granules in the bathroom which works a treat On dry days I always open my windows to air the rooms for 30 minutes, that’s all it takes Every light bulb in my flat is a low energy one and I always turn off the light when I leave the room But I am worried about my gas bill for this winter and am trying not to use it despite having a terminal illness Comment from : Verena Maharajah |
