Question hopefully will be seen How do you feel about repeated heating of the water in a glass pot to loosen everything up? I saw someone who uses olive oil post online that they also heat and cool the oil a few times Can you think of any negatives to this? I wouldnt want to thermally shock the metals but I can see heating and cooling perhaps loosening everything a bit better Comment from : DieLuftwaffel |

I have a oval shaped coin, that's all red and rusty with bits of blue/green rust coming through I tried putting it in coca cola and lightly brush away the stuff but it didn't budge Some gold colour came through on the edge and the engraving is viewable on one side and it reads "SPQR" Comment from : Samuel Hopper |
|
How about using an untrasonic unit No danger of scratching coins Use mild detergent and I don’t think it will destroy the patina Comment from : John Iacono |

I'm curious how long ancient coins were in circulation and used as currency during antiquity For example, were coins from 4th century BC Syracuse considered viable currency in 3rd Roman Empire? Which leads me to question if ancient coins were collected throughout antiquity? Did people treasure and collect coins of their favorite emperors or artistic masterpieces like coins from Syracuse? Comment from : A Day In The My Life |

Thumb's up for a very helpful video, and you can count me as subscribed I'm one of those who'd still been using that olive oil soak, generally recommended in days of yore, on the odd little "Uncleaned Ancients" lots I've gotten from time to time, and without any disasterous results Yet henceforth I believe I'll try your advice with the distilled water Thanks again! I always love your videos and you're slowly getting me into the idea of joining you in cleaning/collecting Spent a while crawling the auction sites you suggested in your other coin collecting video, I like the idea of the more personal involvement you get cleaning dirty batchesbrQuick nitpick: try not to rapidly switch from a darker video with coin details (so we get super close to the screen to examine) to a slide with a pure white background, my retina no likey Comment from : YellowbusRider |

Just made the mistake of purchasing "premium" uncleaned coins form Noble Roman Coins, and dang! A majority are corroded well beyond recognition 4/30 are passable, 10ish are glorified metal slugs, and the rest are only just recognizable as coins This is sad, especially now that they charge $3 each Sigh Comment from : noleftturnunstoned |

So, this might be an ignorant question but I'm sure you'll know the answer I just bought a small lot of unclean Balkan Roman coins (10) to try my hand as I collect coins and this sounds like a peaceful hobby My problem is, how do I find larger lots and where do these sites find large lots to sell to the general public? I'm assuming auctions but I can't find the right resources to find these auction sites If you don't want to answer publicly, I'd deeply appreciate a message :) Comment from : Pole To Pole Travel |

Pawnshop: b"No, you're not supposed to clean them!"/b Comment from : JonatasAdoM |

I know this is probably stupid, but when you talk about the patina being apart of the coin's character and history, that is cool to me But i really wanna see the coin restored to how it looked if i really lived in that time era I wanna see how it originally would have looked That's just a weird personal preference I'm wondering if there's a way to preserve a coin once the patina is removed Like resin or something Might be a waste of coin, but I'm wondering what these looked like with a high gloss and a shine to them I guess i just have to accept that the damage time did to these objects cannot be undone Comment from : jvogler_ art |

Thanks for this I've just ordered six large uncleaned bronze coins from Nero Coins It will interesting to see how they clean up Comment from : Phil Wardle |

Very useful video For the record, I'm dead against the selling and buying of antiquities and the ensuing profiteering - I think all such trade should be made illegal worldwidebrGiven that this cannot be prevented or outlawed in the near future, showing how to properly clean an ancient artefact is the next best thing brNow a question which I assume has been posted before numerous times: have you tried using one of those cheap ultrasonic bath cleaners? Would you recommend one for this task? Comment from : Stelios Posantzis |
|
Have you done a video on gold and silver coins yet? Or here is a somewhat different question: Was there a metal used in ancient coins that might look gold colored under its patina other than gold? I got what was supposed to be a cull coin that shows a gold colored metal under one edge after soaking in olive oil for about 6 months Still pretty crusty though Much thicker and larger (well, at least perceptibly) than the other <1cm coins I received Total rookie here so I am wondering if this is only wishful thinking I might have somehow gotten a gold coin Comment from : Matt Frugé |
|
I have been researching how to clean Roman coins; and I’m hearing to use olive oil, or not And to use distilled water (and to not) with so many conflicting ideas, I’m not sure what to do I really don’t want to ruin history Comment from : Matthew Moore |
|
I would like to get into this but I don’t want to mess up these coins and destroy history Comment from : ur dad |
|
Rule #1, never use a cleaning tool made of materials stronger than the coin you're cleaning, ie don't use steel on copper, it will ruin the patina and leave ugly scratches Use a copper wire brush instead, pointed plastic tools and toothpicks Comment from : Andrei Gandila |
|
I started cleaning roman coins following this video There really is a learning curve I accidentally went a little too much with the x-acto knife and scratched the patina on my first attempt brUnfortunately the websites you provided are sold out of coins to clean And coins I got from Ebay were very hit or miss on quality Can't wait to start cleaning again with lessons learned! Hey I could watch like 3 hours of this You should definitely do more I absolutely love to hear the stories of the coins Comment from : Max Kraeger |

Good method, but here in Prague, most of such finds have much more volatile patina It can break on touch It is due to the soil composition (mostly because of chemicals used during communist era) Artefact preservation labs here in Prague use an ultrasound needle for bronze/copper - the kind that dentist uses to clean teeth plaque I am seriously thinking about getting one :-) I still would not attempt to clean roman age bronze stuff myself, but try it on slightly modern finds I hand over the older items to professionals Sometimes I clean silver roman coins, but only because I have decent skill in cleaning silver and it is much more durable Bronze is much more fragile, because of our soil conditions That goes not only for coins, but also fibulae, amulets etc :/ Comment from : Carpathian |
|
Caution, patience and tiny details I love it And I love coins Perhaps you opened the way for a new hobby for me? Comment from : Lars Ronæs |

So the question I'm sure many of us have - with a proper cleaning job, how much does the coin's value increase, assuming you didn't get lucky and find something rare?brFor all of the time and effort you put into a $6 coin, is it now just a $12 coin, $18 or what?brIn light of the time it takes, is it really worth cleaning coins, do you simply hope you'll get lucky and uncover a rare or is this a pure hobby with no other reward than a clean coin?
