This is spot on - I was a manager of consulting services at a boutique consulting firm and recommended that approach to my consultants - it worked for me and I think it made the difference for some of my applicants - key was hitting it off with the interviewer For me one memorable situation was where I sat down with the hiring manager and at the beginning of the interview I noticed a picture of the manager with his motorcycle - I mentioned it and noted that I rode too and we had a long conversation about riding We had a nice conversation and at the end I commented that I thought that I was well suited for the requirements of the position and that I would be excited to work with him - he responded with the question regarding my ability to do the job and I responded positively and asked him for the opportunity to prove myself - end of story I started the job a week later and was highly successful in the position Comment from : Richard Wolff

I worked with a woman who moved to New York City to be an artist It was her dream and she has just enough money to land a job within a month If she didn’t get a job she would have to move back to her hometown It got down to the final day and no one had hired her The people she was meeting were brash and to the point She was desperate and had nothing to lose so she went into a bookstore and asked the owner if he was hiring He was giving her a bit of a runaround so she yelled at him, “I need a f*cking job!
