There are people being paid good money to make these deals Why would I care about it as a viewer? Comment from : Ithecastic |
I find it baffling that studios spend a lot on marketing costs ( USD 150 million ) when a lot of these promotions can be done online or in social media I know TV ads are in millions but does that mean you have to pay TV ads for every country on earth? Comment from : Rayleigh G |
I like how this is a disguised ad for avatar and a distraction from the money laundering in the movie industry 😂 Comment from : The Matrix of Meaning |

Investment in stocks is a great way to invest your money The team is constantly checking the market for changes and make sure that you are always informed about the best time to invest As a result, I have made more money than ever before, and I don't have to manage my portfolio on my own! Invest in stocks, it's worth it! Comment from : Laila Alfaddil |

It's a load of crap, and I ain't gonna watch that 'movie' Comment from : André Deketele AstuteComplexTheory |

Learned something about movie making, thanks Comment from : deez nuts |

First, let me say, I’m not a fan of James Cameron or these films & don’t understand the real reason why they make so much money When they say a movie needs to make a certain amount of money to break even, which is normally double the cost to make the film, it’s because of the advertising With the James Bond film you mentioned costing $300 million & needing to make $650 million The film cost $300 million on the film, & $350 million on advertising Bond is a worldwide brand, it only made $200 million in the US & a total of $879 million worldwide That means the studio only made somewhere around $229 million dollars in profit Another thing to consider, is with the box office in China for example, the studio doesn’t get the money from that country It just becomes a number to brag about & a number for top film grossing lists With Avengers Infinity War & Endgame they spent a billion dollars for two films & another billion to advertise them With Infinity War making $2052 billion that covered most of the cost & ads for the two films Almost all of Endgame’s $2798 billion was profit With Avatar 2, it has been rumored Cameron has filmed both the live action parts of Avatar 2 & 3 together They added all the special effects to Avatar 2 & it was released Now they are working on the effects for Avatar 3 There are plans for a total of 5 Avatar films Going back to Avatar 2, there are also rumors of Cameron buying an entire theater’s matinee showings during the week to help boost the gross Films gross doesn’t really matter when you think about it Most of the gross you hear about is of “modern” movies If you were to go back & adjust Gone with the Wind’s Box office, it would be around $344 billion & no film will ever get close to that Comment from : Stichtaco |
Why are Movie budgets estimated anyway? Why isn't this info just released lmao? Comment from : Green-Pill Neo |

About to be 3rd highest grossing movie of all time Comment from : cham dumba |
You definitely gave me more insight in movie economics, I always thought a movie makes a billion dollars inbox, minus production and marketing cost, and the reminder would be profits, split with theaters Comment from : andile nkumanda |
$2 billion to just break even? brBruh Comment from : E C |
This shows & proves why the A2 box office is full cap, lying Ain't no way it made $2 billion in a month when it's near 3 hours so it must screen one less showing daily than most 90 minute films Where are the lines for A2, Merchandise? Costumes? Trying to tell me it topped MARVEL: ENDGAME, TOP GUN & THE MATRIX series? Get outta here Comment from : ReiMourr Power |
Modern media's lack of accuracy in finance is always disappointing Thank you for making a video like this🫡brbrThe movie was exceptional and I highly recommend it to everyone Make sure to watch it in the immersive IMAX format for a truly unforgettable experience Comment from : ElBlanco Finance |

Looking up Hollywood accounting might clear why it's horrible idea for actors to have of profits as form of payment Comment from : sashko02 |

Guy reads totally like a voice synthesizer! Comment from : Piotr Maślanka |

I heard Cameron was given 1 bil to make all the sequels People need to be paid for their time acting, working, researching, writing, developing techniques, and technology for the movies brI was a freshman when the first movie came out and a sequel was greenlit but never saw the light of day till now That’s a lot of expenses up front is all I’m saying Comment from : KeyWestGlenn |

Who's here after Avatar 2 crossed the 2 Bn mark? Comment from : Nafis Anwari |

They have topped Star Wars Ep7 and are at place 4 now sitting at roundabout 202B box office Comment from : Titus Taddhäus Taddl Tentakel |
This is also the problem with rating movies based off "opening weekends" etcbrbrTake the Bladerunner movies for example, neither of them did well initially and could be considered "flops", but fact is those movies are slow burns and become beloved cult-classics over a long period of time Comment from : Empirehog |
imagine making the world's most expensive movie to cement your legacy and it's avatar lmfao Comment from : Joey van Leeuwen |
And the worst part is, the movie sucks The plot and characters are shit It’s a three hour PlayStation 5 movie with Microsoft screensavers as inspiration I mean it It really sucks Comment from : Nathaniel Wildstone |
Yup, over 2bn now, and I'm yet to see it in 4D Haven't watched the rest of the video yet, but I'm assuming he needs to break even since they are budgeting for the other films too Comment from : Kadbros |
So a studio can make a movie in 6 to 9 mos and spend 300 million But people don't think a movie that took years to make isnt going to cost a lot more? Dude was developing his own tech I give no F's about this movie but I respect the craft James is a visual monster Story teller, eh opinions vary Comment from : Edward Jones |
Another huge benefit of the movie, financially speaking, is that it will go to Disney Plus Netflix invested $160 million in the Irishman Comment from : René Vos |
2 major problems with your own logic:br1) Production companies are RUINING theaters when after onl 3-4weeks, they go to STREAMING, which KILLS theaters of their opportunities and also kills the movie money machine for pathetic stream rightsbr2) Asking theaters to put in a 3 HOUR LONG MOVIE?!?!?!? That HURTS the total movies shown in a day! Like only 3 shows PER SCREEN!!! 2 hours and 90 mins can get triple that!! Comment from : Timberwolfe |
For 2 billion they can go to Pandora to film the movie Comment from : Barvazoni |
Are "they" gonna lie about how much money Avatar 2 made, when it actually failed at the box office Keep lieing about box office numbers until Disney CEO is fired and the company stock plummets Comment from : Y3K holocaust year 3000 |
The theatre split argument doesn't matter if it makes the money fast enough Which these claims of needing 2 billion to break even came out well before the movie was released, so they didn't know how long it would take them to make it So you can skip that argument entirely Comment from : Daniel Armstrong |
if you have watched the movie tell me, what is the most memorable scene you remember or the most interesting side character or what is even the name of the main character? Comment from : Wahyu Setiawan |

bollocks, movie production budget was around 260 millions and lets add 260 more for the marketing budget Capeshit fans want to propagate this misinformation that Avatar somehow needs to make 10 billion dollars in order to break even Comment from : MrPrankmastergeneral |
Amazing video thank you and i love the series Comment from : Derrick Brown |
It’s ok 👌🏾 but too long If he made it shorter, he’d save some cost too 😅 Comment from : Athaporn MCorp Review |
bThey are going to make the profit with avatar 3 This is what the plan has been all along Avatar 3 is already 95 done They shot avatar 3 with avatar 2 so that is why it cost 460 million to make and needs to break 2 billion to make profit Even if avatar 3 only makes 1 billion in box office, most of it will be all profit because they've already made the movie using the avatar 2 budget All they need to spend is marketing for avatar 3/b Comment from : bushgreen |
I would really love for people to say why they wanted it to fail I really don’t understand why people were absolutely praying on the downfall of this movie Comment from : Tripp Watson |

GLAD TO SAY HE ALREADY REACHED $2 BILLION TODAY AND HEADING TO BE THE 5TH TO 4TH GROSSING MOVIE OF ALL TIME Comment from : Christian Jamie Alcasid |
A five percent cut of the profits going to Sam Worthington must rank as one of the worst contracts ever written The guy CAN'T ACT and has ZERO charisma You could replace him with someone talented at a fraction of the cost and no one would give damn Indeed, an interesting protagonist might be just the shot in the arm this series needs Comment from : Geoff Foster |
I gotta say tho big profit or not Jimbo knocked the bitch out of the motherfucking park with this 3D-type masterpiece Comment from : Aang L Jackson |
There’s no way it had a typical blockbuster budget when it took thirteen years to make Comment from : parodysam |
Puss in boots 2 wipes it ass with avatar lmao is not bad but damn that freaking movie is a masterpiece Comment from : LT |
Knowing that James Cameron filmed the sequels back to back, I'm convinced the need for a high number to break even is so the other movies can be strictly for profit Comment from : TheRicco1021 |
Reason avatar earning in the longitivity run Like 3rd week and in the 4 the weekbrbrReason there is no adrenal rush to watch the moviebrIt's more like experiencing visualspectacular Comment from : sujit sadalagi |
Gunna be honest the story should have caused the entire movie to tank flounder and ruin James’s career but that movie had some of the best visuals and it was slightly enjoyable for a 3 hour school play with all the best special effects visuals and art but the dioulog Comment from : Qwatt Yeet |
Way too long Comment from : Mind Rider |
They filmed Avatar 3 at the same time so they were nervous about losing a shit ton of money, but it turned out ok This is not that tricky 😂 Comment from : John Wihebrink |
i hope this film makes 3B Comment from : esc gungusar |
They didn't break the 2 billion mark sadly Because many MCU fans don't want another superhero movie to overcome Avengers! Comment from : Noel The Betrayer |
He movie was a good family movie but way too boring Comment from : First Last |
Let’s not forget it took 21 films and 11 years to build up to Avengers Endgame Comment from : R P |
Are they not filming the next few films back to back? Surely they would take into account the cost of those 3 films and add it into the costs of the 2nd film as its the film being released Breaking even at £15bn covers the cost of the sequels and the film released meaning going ahead they can spend more money knowing rhe sales from the 4rd and 4th film would be almost pure profit And it would easily amount to £2/3bn+ Incredible numbers Avatar is almost getting the same love as did LOTR Comment from : MajinPorunga |
$250-460 million dollars, but the movie needs to make $15 billion to break even, that is insane Comment from : M M |
I'm curious how much the other films are going to cost, since most of the R&D expenses have been baked into the fist budget My guess is that the sequels to come will have much higher margins Comment from : Julian Klappenbach |
The $2B is the total cost of all upcoming sequels Comment from : Mallow |
didnt he film the rest of the movies together? so while he might need to hit 15-2b, that will make subsequent films not have a break even point and be instantly profitable? Comment from : T2D |
The Waffle House has found it’s new host Comment from : Shitty comedy |
The avatar visual reality it's insane Comment from : Julian Mancera |
As of 1:30 PST January 17, it’s at 19 billion Comment from : Jordan Orso |
This is SO VERBOSE AND REPETITIVE! Talk about dragging out a video This could be a 5-minute video if the guy didn’t keep repeating himself and dragging the the video out I stopped after 2 mins because it was so repetitive Comment from : Brian Lauri |
I don't think the profits this movies gonna make would be even worth it Comment from : Mizu Senpai |
In Russia theaters are sold out with avatar 2 days ahead, but it's illegal because we are under sanctions So, I think, Cameron wouldn't be getting revenues from here, cause sanctions Comment from : Vlad Alexeev |
did 2, part of 3 and he only wanted to make 15b to be happy with part 2, its at 19b so part 2 covered its cost, and a portion of part 3 using profits to make another film is still profit Comment from : S B |
Dont forget it came out on the weekend of the world cup so not a lot of eyes were on it when it came out Emphasising your point on the split Comment from : Ashil Shah |
UPDATE: James Cameron revealed this budget included avatar 3 and around half of avatar 4 And they’ve already made well over a billion from avatar 2 so safe to assume they’ll break even very easily Comment from : Trabsol |
I've seen it The visuals are pretty impressive but they can't overshadow how bad the story and characters are It's a great movie if you are 12 years old If you are someone who actually saw the original Avatar in theaters you are most likely in your 30s now and this just isn't good enough Comment from : nomercy8989 |
Use crypto to save on exchange fees and sales agents! Comment from : Prasanth Yanamala |
Great video But why try this scheme twice and plan to extend the franchise beyond Avatar 2 with the strategy being so financially risky for the studio? Doesn’t make a lot of sense from a business standpoint Comment from : Carlos Flores |
You do know that you don't just subtract the production budget from earnings, do you? Cinemas need to make proffits, you also have marketing costs and of course taxes Comment from : Sorin Cosma |
This film doesn't need $2bn to break even As simple as that Comment from : Philia mesa 1997 |
Just stopped by to see all the input from the youtube accountants lol Comment from : Jack Waffles |
I saw Avatar 2 on Imax and honestly it was so good I'm thinking of watching it in the cinema again xD Comment from : Miki-Mik |

I like how James NEVER Said anything about number 2 Billion but media talks about it nonstop Comment from : Gytis321 S |
👎🏻 Comment from : T P |
Avatar 2 already broke even long ago Avatar 2 and 3 were filmed together So the 2 billion is for both films, everything is profit after They are very smart Comment from : Creus Anthony Rodrigues-Rodney |
Jesus the movie was so vapid no wonder it had so much cash wasted on things other than the movie Comment from : Wuper |

Move was worth it, even if i paid double price for ticket i would be ok with it Comment from : Its Arsa |
It wasn’t very good You expect way too much when it takes over a decade to come out Comment from : Tim Thompson |
Never bet against James Cameron He's spent his whole career proving people and naysayers WRONG! Comment from : Rudie Obias |
Not mentioned is they filmed Avatar 3 and 4 concurrently with A2so when you average the 3 filmsthey saved a ton of $ on production costs The production cost for all 3 sequels is likely under $500M Much of that cost was spent developing new filming technologies that will not have to be spent again I'm sure many costumes and props were reused The same production and filming staff were likely used saving a ton of money on hiring and retraining new people for future films that would have a traditional gap in time between productionsbrbr So maybe when James Cameron says they need $2B to break even, he is including the total production cost just spent?brbr Even if it was $500M that's only $167M each and since Avatar 2 is a success coupled with the fact the next movies are coming at 2 yr intervals vs 13yrsDisney will likely not need to spend as much on marketing Avatar 3 & 4 The net profit from the next 2 movies should be much larger than the first two filmsassuming Avatar 3 is a good movie that filmgoers like Comment from : Jason Fifield |
