The cheapest fly rod you can find today is probably comparable to the best fly rod made back in the 30’s Comment from : CWS |
I've always been a budget guy out of necessity The thing is, the fish don't care how much your gear costs As long as it's functional, you'll catch stuff brbrI'm only just getting into fly fishing I've done some tenkara the last year or two, but recently got my first modern fly combo Haven't had a chance to use it yet though, I'm trying to absorb all the info I can first Comment from : Brunnen_Gee |

Great video man I might have to try one of these After years of fishing, I'm about to get into fly fishing since moving to Maine I'm about to start tying flies too! Comment from : Bladefinger |
I know this is way but I’m brand new and clueless How much backing do I put and how long of a leader?? Comment from : YAMBLES33 |
To add to my previous comment- wrt the reel; I recently bought 4 of these type of reel; I assume besides personal branding and colour, most of these cheaper reels probably come from the same factory Having said that, I am actually quite happy with the reel: I don't fish professionally so I am okay with a cheaper quality Definitely better than the plastic/ graphite models sold by Walmart and some other outfitters Once again, thank you for the honest review Comment from : Darrel Baillie |
Thank you for your honest review I personally have looked at these kits, and when considering the Rand/ Dollar exchange rate, seemed reasonable for me So considering your expertise in this review has answered a lot of questions for me Thank you 😊 Comment from : Darrel Baillie |

10 months later and i have 7 rods 4 maxcatch rods, a redington, and 2 echos The echos are by far much better rods The redington is a bit stiff, and the maxcatch rods are junk I've broken 7 tips on 4 rods They will fall right off if you touch them Literally touch them I got one for free and did a review on it As an ultralight starter rod, its just ok the reel is junk, and your line will pull of the reel spool guides, the rod is really nice feeling (just dont feel it too much the tip will fall off!) its really light weight, and after returning 3 tips I just settled that i'll have to fix the tips myself Which I did with the UL one, and the euro rod as well Interestingly the tip sections are widely different from each other for the exact same rod! Comment from : Half Insane Outdoor Guy |

Great tutorial thank you Comment from : Rob Thomas |

Very cool video Comment from : Tony George |

I was inspecting all of Orvis rods at a store the other day from the Helios down and all the handles had cork that looked like this Comment from : John D |
Actually, especially with fly-fishing especially the more you spend on your gear the more the fish will mock you That's science guys Comment from : quickPullMyfinger |
My first flyrod was at Cortland Walmart flyrod It was all right I looked at it as a starter, I didn’t want to spend anything if I couldn’t handle it I have a reverse shoulder that was put in on my right side, and I have a muscle that had to be rerouted to replace 3 that have atrophied As a turned out, I can handle this, a fly rod better did my open face spinning reels and rods, which I have to modify my cast I’m still learning, and I’m enjoying it Comment from : Bonnita Claus |
Is it a good reel Comment from : Fishing with mattias |
I enjoyed your clip 👍Nice rod for a guy who's a fine weather fisherman in small river's in Ireland going into the sea for seatrout, you'd probably call them streams in America You only have to cast 20 yard's max I use a sage xp 9 ft on my third top half it's a 9ft two section Don't know how they broke, just a few inches from the top, and it slid down the line lol my latest section has better action than the first two Caught Atlantic salmon up to 8lbs on it Those Atlantic salmon in Ireland fight really hard Comment from : Spiralmoss |
THE LINK TO THE ROD DOESN'T WORK Comment from : Yankee |
So You put to much backing on And reel and rod don't perform like a rig costing 10 or 20x more It's 85 bucks Comment from : Hua Hin |
Idk, I would think a cheap 5/6 weight rod with a 6 weight line would feel too weak to shoot any distance Comment from : Noel |
Super stoked to get into fly fishing Bought this rod and 5 min later this video came up looks like a good starter investment! Comment from : PNWTRUCKER47 |
I'm not much of a fly fisherman Checked out this video because it's something I've always been interested in since reading Homer Circle's articles in Sports Afield about 50 years agobrMy primary fishing is saltwater bay, surf and party boat fishing in NJbrI bought a bait feeder style spinning reel by Sougayilang a few years ago, and I was so impressed with it out of the box that I ordered a few more of their spinning reels and a bait casting reel and rod before I ever actually fished with the first onebrHuge mistakebrI finally got a chance to use that reel when the weather warmed up a little to try the bay for some early spring stripersbrIt turned out to be pretty windy and about 45 minutes into my trip that impressive new reel started locking up and had to be retiredbrThe other stuff, I've only used in freshwater, and so far so good except for the casting rod which was several sections and needed to be sanded down in order to fit togetherbrI really don't use the stuff It's just around for my grandkids to use & ok for thatbrI'm just curious about the fly rod and reel and how well they hold up over a few tripsbrI've actually been very happy with the Piscifun casting reels I've been using for the past 5 years in saltwater & would be interested in their fly rods and reels Comment from : David Bulanowski |
Just fell on your channel So glad I did Both my husband and myself are super novice to fly fishing, so much so we were too scared to invest in 2 rod$$$ we opted for the walmart brand, good thing too, we broke one the first week! Love the descriptions ! Comment from : Sylvia Koelsch |
What was your final take on the leader loop? Would you use it again on another rod? I've been pondering whether to make the switch or not, would love your input Comment from : Eagle |
would you be so kind as to tell me what river this is, looks wonderful?! thanks Comment from : Ben Maurer |
blaughs in $33/b combo I'm buying tomorrow* brI don't need it to catch fish, it's to reteach me since it's been 10 years since I fly fished, back in Colorado, now I'm in Washington Got a lot to relearn Comment from : casey360360 |
The line is actually good, in my opinion I have been told I am great at casting I am terrible at fishing LOL But I practice casting a lot in my yard, and I can not build the cheapest fly blank out there for that price! Comment from : Cody Vickers |
I have a casting reel and a spinning reel from them that I LOVE Comment from : Cody Vickers |
You apparently build your own rods, what is your favorite blank? Comment from : Cody Vickers |
I appreciate your down to earth approach and budget friendly guidance What is the name of Jessie's channel or link to his fly? Comment from : Monty |
That identical Fly Rod Combo is £10962 here in the UK on Amazon, that's $132 !! 😳 I'm packing up and moving to the USA Paying waaay too much for fishing gear over here! 😤 Comment from : incident895 |
Nice job stroking bozos off Comment from : Ed Wood |
Thank you for this video!brI think it's a good deal for trying fly fishing, I order this rod now! Comment from : Servus |
This kit is 190$ on Amazon Canada Lol Comment from : Richard Evans |
Thanks brA great video and information brI’ve never used a fly rod but it sure looks like something I would really enjoy !brMuch appreciated Comment from : Gary Lam |
The alignment dots are like that purposefully to compensate for the natural angle you tend to hold the rod at when stripping, it will keep the eyelids parallel to be surface of the water while the reel is slightly askew I’ve had a st croix with the crooked first dot and it took me a while to realize why Comment from : DICKS CROSSED GARAGE |
Liked and subscribed! I really enjoyed this video and am looking forward to following you in the future! I am the faculty sponsor of a new fishing club and I was looking for an inexpensive option we could purchase for students to learn with This looks like an excellent choice! I also want to pick up a couple of these for my kids/nieces and nephews to learn on I like the idea of not being stressed if the rod breaks or is otherwise ruined by a beginner it's not a huge investment and the reel could be transferred to a new rod Thank you for the great content! Comment from : Andrew Lybbert |
The first reel looks like the one That I have Great one for time fly fishers Rob63 Comment from : Rob Swatosh |
The backing did not come from factory (or did it?) Edit: it was a part of a kit, should have paid attention, so there's no reason to blame the manufacturer for too little spool capacity, the only problem came from user error I guess But very helpful review overal, so it seems one can get usable fly fishing setup for quite damn cheap Comment from : Bezimienny_Andżej |

It’s hard to find good deals on a cheap but good complete combo set up’s , I fish saltwater and bought a 10-11 wt rod and reel to go after bigger fish by the the time you buy backing the proper fly line leaders you’ll drop some money on the table , I’d been searching for something the next size down as a back up but I didn’t want to spend big money ,I finally found a 9-10 wt Cortland combo at Walmart ,rod reel backing, leader, and case for $6999 😳 When I saw this I to questioned myself on quality but I figured Cortland has been around for a long time , next day I was out flogging the water and was really surprised, it casted great , the action on the rod was really good , quality was good , drag on the reel was fantastic, now hears the big draw back ! Walmart only gets like one shipment a year ,it’s the first time I’ve seen so much fly equipment there ever , they had a5-6 set up to , hear again you don’t have to pay big money if you just shop around , I to looked at that make rod and reel and that reel looked well made ,but I’ve been waiting to see a review on the drag and how good it was, it looked like you were having a great day ! You catching those brookies reminded me when I lived up north , great review thanks for posting 👍 One question can that reel be switched for left hand retrieve ? 🤔 Comment from : Dave Scheer |
just out of curiosity, why do you even need a reel? you never seem to use it Comment from : The Wild Traveller |
He didn't click the coupon box that would have saved him and extra 10🤣brRookie mistake Comment from : muteprophet 87 |

👍👍 Comment from : AV BALIK DOĞA Musa GÜL |
Love cheaper combos The only reel ive ever had that ‘bought’ me more fish is the scorpion dc reel Worth every bit of 300 dollars and use it on a daily basis in salt and freshwater and saves me so much time As for fly rods, ive broken more expensive ones than cheap cabelas combos haha Comment from : Aquavert GreenWorks |
You should test out the maxcatch fly kit it's only $100 CAD almost half the price of the kit you purchased Comment from : Hopin |
Off topic but I love your hat! Do you mind sharing where you got it? Thx! Comment from : Shonda H |
100$ on a spool of line? Ridiculous, this is why fly fisherman are made fun of! Comment from : Chad Ingram |
Here's a tip Never walk with your rod ahead of you, always behind, why ? Because if you stumble you will probably break the tip of your 1000 dollar fly rod Much less likely if the rod is carried behind you, not "at the trail" obviously Comment from : 2ndcornets |
I just got a cheaper fly reel with a disc drag Old fly reels you either palmed or used "knuckle drag" Comment from : William Collins |
Even the worst of today's fly fishing equipment may seem a world better than fiberglass wonder rods or split bamboo (buggy whips) and braided fly lines that we had to GREASE before fishing Do you still use CAT GUT Leaders? I still have mine Comment from : William Collins |
Imagine throwing on $2000 worth of waders & gear to go fish for 10 inch trout, ironically for a video about budget rods lmao Comment from : Cam |
I didn't have 35 minutes to view your vid, sry, but Dunhams used to sell an Eagle Claw flyrod and real with the backing and leader for less than 30 bucks I bought a bunch of them to use to teach fly casting and ended up selling them to my students for what I payed There was a little hitch though, I had to take the real apart and turn a mechinism around because the drag was the wrong direction Not a problem for 30 bucks! The folks at Eagle Claw are wonderful people and offered to fix them for me, but after they told me what to do I said I had no problem doing it myself It was fiberglass, and I don't care what anyone says, fiberglass casts way better than any carbon fiber rod Comment from : rjiggy07 |
Terrific information for us starters I was wondering if my beginner rod and reel and line were no good because my casts don't sail out like yoursbut it is obvious technique is everything! You make it look so easy just flicking it out there so farI am still trying to get past 20 feet with casts! This has inspired me ! Comment from : Randy Kish |
I am the typical YouTube skeptic I was ready to watch you trash any fly rod that was not top of the line Starting out honest so you know where I am coming frombrThis was an impressive honest (IMHO) review I enjoyed itbrI started fly fishing in 96-97, as I wanted a fishing kit small enough for my backpacking to remote locations so I did not have to pack in so much food I bought a $5000 fly rod (did not come with leader/backing/or tippets) and spent several weekends "whipping the water" until I figured out what the heck I was doing Fly rod held up, busted a lot of tippets, and shredded the ends of fly line, until I got the hang of it That flyrod is still used today, but not as much (moved back to Midwest brOver all thumbs up Hit the like button, and will watch a few more videos before deciding to subscribe Comment from : lucky_x16 |
Interesting video but dude your hard to watch Your energy is super negative bro Smoke some weed or something Comment from : Jay Noneofyourbiz |
I bought what looks like the same rig, it was branded for our local chain sports store but otherwise thats it I was a keen flyfisherman years ago but drifted off to other things and I guess got it just for a couple of trips I was invited on I love it it works well and I have had some big trout on it my drag works fine (river resident rainbows in the 5 or 6 lb size) challenging fish I may get back into the fly so most likely get something a bit better but keep this as a spare or loaner rig Comment from : John Edwards |
"I am gonna buy the cheapest thing"brbproceeds to set a price range/b Comment from : Anton Motin |
I go to our National Forest walking the dogs around the picnic area and camp ground A lot of trout fishing at the river that they stock with trout There were a couple guys practicing their fly casting in the parking lot I told them I could not resist saying this, but they might have better luck fishing in the river We all laughed Comment from : Jay Strock |
this guy remindes me of myself lol, "awww that was sick I watched him eat it!" love the hype really wanna fish again, haven't had much luck this summer Comment from : diction placement |
