Fit Recovery
Gabrielle Glaser, author of "Her Best-Kept Secret," offers insights from her Atlantic piece about the failings of the famous support group, Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), and the truth about mainstream alcohol treatment in the US and how it pales in comparison to Finland's science-based medical interventions In this video, you'll learn about the very low success rates and thus very high failure rates of Alcoholics Anonymous and mainstream AA-based and abstinence-based rehab centers Glaser provides compelling statistics in the US and Finland as well as quotes from addiction professionals about AA and alcohol

Speaking for myself here, and I have been to several meetings AA is the worlds way! If i depended soley on AA I would have never gotten sober Jesus Christ is the only way!! I cannot tell you how many times I've heard someone in a meeting give God credit lastly AA is always first Thats so wrong, God deserves all the praise and Glory!! Oh and I'm not an alcohol or drug attic, I was in my past! God does not want anyone to continually call themselves those things after he brought you out!! I've been redeemed and to God be the glory!!

Rick C-137
One of the founders of AA found freedom through LSD and had used it in his formulation of the program Coincidence I think not, I told an Aa group of my experience with LSD helping me not drink They said I was a heretic and told me not to speak of such things
Comment from : Rick C-137

God_Is_Love 528Hz
I guess this lady doesn't understand the difference between stopping drinking and becoming a better person, which are not the same thing Anybody, alcoholic, addict, or neither, what is hugely benefit from going through the 12 steps, especially in today's world when narcissism is the #1 problem
Comment from : God_Is_Love 528Hz

Keith Hults
The word GOD is NOT in the AA books ONLY in the original manuscript mentions GOD Because of all the different faiths, HIGHER POWER has replaced GOD in the AA books for over 7 decades I have read every book many times in 35yrs in recovery GOD is only in the original writings The narrator is an outsider They do not understand the alcoholic They're just reading statistics The women said Finland encourages normal drinking afterwards, would never lead to my 35yrs, if I ever assumed that I could drink normally again
Comment from : Keith Hults

For the REAL alcoholic You need AAbrOther people can stop drinking using different methods

Carrie McCarthy
Addiction is the only disease that tells you that you don't have anything wrong with you, simply the denial of it is what keeps you getting the help you need It's a physical addiction cuppled with a mental obsession AA works if you let it work for you Addicts are able to help other addicts because they understand the disease, and you can't shit a shitter They've been their, done that, and can hold the other addicts accountable It's a program of accountability, addicts want the easier more softer way This is why the likelihood of going out and using it again is always a possibility The sad realty is you either find recovery or you end up dying from the disease AA is a simple program made complicated by the addicts mind, wanting the easier more softer way, which in in end, can and will be a death sentence for them It's a complicated disease with a simple solution, turning your will and your life over to the care a higher power as you understand him, through a simple spiritual 12 step program It's the mindset of terminal uniqueness of the addict that ends up killing them in the end Famous saying of an addict "That may work for you, but it won't work for me" Denial, Denial, Denial Higher Power simply means someone or something in charge of the universe and it's outcomes, and it's not you I just have to do the footwork and let them take care of the rest Turning your "will" and your "life" over to the care of a higher power as you understand them Pretty simple but made complicated by the addict! Addiction is cunning, baffling and powerful may you find help now

Obviously the person who made this vlog hasn't read the AA literature or doesn't understand it The lesson here, is don't make vlogs on issues and things you haven't a clear knowledge of and are ignorant to the facts This vlog is FULL of misinformation and untruthsbrFACT: AA is a Spiritual program NOT a religion The God in AA, Is a God of your own understanding AA tradition of Attraction rather than Promotion is, just that brHave a good day

Mmmmm idk the AA program has its flaws but this just sounds like BS This person was never an addict clearly lol
Comment from : Baecon Ater

Matt Morgan
There’s no better alternative to AA Unfortunately, it’s not the “meetings” it’s working a program of action and change that people can’t seem to grasp Mostly, letting go of one’s social group and spending time working with other people struggling with the same afflictions AA is the most powerful psychological program on earth 🌍 Moreover, it’s light years ahead of the sciencebrI love how people tout AA as archaic, yet before AA the holy grail was “insight” To achieve a paradigm shift, it may take a breakneck focus on applying other methods Additionally, CBT, DBT and ACT all came out of the 12-step movement
Comment from : Matt Morgan

Leo
It's not a gospel It's a program that shows you how to live a dependent free happy life
Comment from : Leo

Inked Flames Candle Studio
Treatment doesn’t work for those who are not ready to quit No matter what it is I am 5 years sober it’s not easy to deny ourselves and nobody can do it for you AA is a support group and it works
Comment from : Inked Flames Candle Studio

Carolynn Krueger
Alcohol is never the problem The problem is that it was the solution You can be dry and still be miserable suffering from the ism’s For that, thank God for AA
Comment from : Carolynn Krueger

Rob Me
AA meetings are free, numerous, and frequent This dumb dumb lives in a fantasy world Not everyone can afford ongoing cognitive behavioral therapy, off lable meds, doctor visits, and time off of work
Comment from : Rob Me

Santosh Menon
It is not so much the drinking of alcohol in excees as the problem, but WHY does one want to do that? There are underlying psychological and mental conditions like severe anxiety, trauma and others Most people who drink in excess want to escape from some pain that they are otherwise unable to face or make life changes so that pain is reduced For this class of people, taking Naltrexone and CBT alone is not sufficient The therpaist is not going to be with them 24/7/365
Comment from : Santosh Menon

Paul Pazsak
Doctors and science will never be able to FIX addictionbrLike she is trying to claim U can't walk in someone's shoes if u never walked it Science wont helpbrOnly thing thats helped is God, the miracle i received when fhe obsession was lifted and the 12 steps Taking God out of the rooms will be a big mistake
Comment from : Paul Pazsak

There are many different ways to get sober AA worked for me I was an alcoholic for many years when i joined I recently celebrated 10 years of continuous sobriety Dont listen to the naysayers
Comment from : kennith minnich

Patrick Fox
According to AA's central services 1 out of 30 members will pick up a 30 year medallion That's about a 333 cure rate per year br Thanks to the courts mandating paroles and probationers it's become a very unsafe place for the most vulnerablebr If you speak critically of the fellowship they can't handle it br After 29 years I heard enough bullshit and enjoy the life I havebr Greatful for the old folks that got me sober and good luck dealing with the tweekers, junkies and predators that permeate the halls and all the bleeding deacons that cling like drowning men to the flotsam that is left of the life boat that helped so many!
Comment from : Patrick Fox

Too much control with there program in there…br“If you leave AA you will drink” being one quote…brI went there for years but never got to grips with it and saw more relapses in there than people outside of it and people still get obsessed with drink even though they dont drink…br13th stepping as well i saw alot of…brGlad im shot of it now and feel free again…brIt worke for some but not everyone
Comment from : Stuart Cumings

Victoria Ryan
Treating alcoholism with with another pill IS replacing an addiction with an addiction These “strict science” people are not open to spirituality and its integral role in healing from addiction Of course she compares to Finland I feel like it’s the go-to for so many of these type of people Ugh!
Comment from : Victoria Ryan

Glaser does not know what she is talking about, happily sober in AA since 6-23-05

You start with assumptions that are false at the get go No AA member is going to denigrate any method that helps
Comment from : Dean Beaver

sean okane
The issue you are not addressing is that rehab is a personal choice, never an obligation to AA Its clear, the issue personal brbrPsychiatry is a joke compared to AA psychiatry, unless diagnosed with a severe disorder, by an actual doctor, is farce brbrI have watched psychiatrist charge patients, with an IQ of sub 75, multiple sessions, with DBT/CBT as a 'cure' brbrDisgusting practice it is amazing what we pay for brbrPsychiatric assessment, awesome!brbrThe criminality of 'sessions' is apparant get assessed, talk to family, friends, partners its a disgrace what psychiatry is now money grubbing, easy answer, charlottens
Comment from : sean okane

Kris
I agree with everything she says I feel like AA is very exclusive He you don't believe in god or follow the steps you're excluded by the group AA not being part of the scientific society and being part of modern methods of dealing with sobriety is a deal breaker for me I got sober using medicine and therapy
Comment from : Kris

Olivier Brunelle
Now I don’t know about you guys but I tried to control my drinking through multiple mischief reductions program wich are common every where with BT combine with medication Never saw it work for any alcoholic lol When I was relapsing no one in AA told me to do more meetings They told me to do the work
Comment from : Olivier Brunelle

Cillian Rangarsson
I go to aa meetings but the aa 12 steps are not for me the aa meetings help me stay sober from alcohol thats enough for me i don't need a sponsor
Comment from : Cillian Rangarsson

Tim
Oh, Oh I went to AA for about 5 years of wasting time Courts send pedos to AA meetings and require them to get a card signed by a random person chosen as "the secretary" I can tell you from experience, that when one takes a step back from AA, it looks alot different than when you are in it I know I started to see all the fails the program perpetuates every day, in every state and across the world Even Bill Wilson was done with AA in the 50's (look it up) He gave it back to the members because he thought it was too out of control Bill went out people Let that soak in
Comment from : Tim

Sean Simpson
AA doesnt work when the individual stops working it But by all means do what you have to do solve your addiction problem
Comment from : Sean Simpson

Lupo
Americans certainly where not drinking more than ever before, a few years ago In the 1820s the average Whiskey consumption per year per person was 80 Liters Not including other alcoholic drinks I'm not sure how much people drink now, but I am sure it is way less
Comment from : Lupo

Lupo
Whenever I here stories about AA I just think these people change in one addiction for another It is a crutch Nothing wrong with that if it works for you, but still, I want to be in charge of my own destiny, and I just do not believe in a higher power I couldn't if I tried
Comment from : Lupo

Javier Rios Garcia
I will psychologist will let you know that alcohol is a legal poison, and this presentation is telling you that there are other ways to normally drink poison As an educational intellect, I strongly disagree with this research and can tell you that AA works because it did for me and no Swedish doctor also happen to have the answers I this may have been a research topic that received a C+ at best for actual information
Comment from : Javier Rios Garcia

Todd Maddaline
AA is categorically NOT a religious program It is a spiritual based program of recovery that strongly encourages, but does not demand, faith in ANY higher power of ones choosing that is greater than the ego based self This woman dies not have her facts straight in the least
Comment from : Todd Maddaline

soofri
The suggestion often is to pretend a God exists, ask it for help, thank it for everything, ask its forgiveness, ask it to direct your thinking, ask it for intuitive ideas So here you are talking to an imaginary being They call that being open minded, being willing to believe Some manage to brainwash themselves into faith that way However youre told you have to face the fact thst God is everything or nothing You have to accept spiritual help or go on to the bitter end ie die of alcoholism Thats your choice
Comment from : soofri

soofri
If it doesnt work, youre told you were not listening, you werent practising the steps right Heres their solution for feeling anger or fear We ask God to remove our anger or fear We think of how we might help the person who has offended us We think of him/her as spiritually sick and we try treating them as one would treat a person with an illness The implication is with compassion and empathy disregarding any offensive behaviour on their part
Comment from : soofri

Paul Kennedy
Why can't someone in the severe range learn to drink in moderation using Naltrexone? Surely it would work the same way on them
Comment from : Paul Kennedy

Jennifer Dean
Selling drugs? Wow lady! Anything to not face God with our problems! Sure, let's take a pill so the pharmaceutical industry can benefit One day, she will answer to God May He have mercy on her soul along with all the other revolving door policy, money hungry, far flight from reality humansbrFurthermore, I had 7 alcohol induced stomach ulcers 2 hemorrhaged I was throwing up blood everywhere! I can never safely drink again Pill or no pill Dbt or no dbt Free or pay a therapist? 😂 I'll accept God & AA Keep your pills and therapy! I'll keep my money and freedom
Comment from : Jennifer Dean

Jeremy Reeves SICG
This is not true at all When AA members relapse they are definitely recommended to go to treatment Members are definitely suggested to see outside therapy This is not true! This is a ploy to push drugs onto drug addicts and alcoholics
Comment from : Jeremy Reeves SICG

Jay Somewhereinflyoverterritory
I find it very ironic that people who get into trouble with the law because of substance abuse have done this abuse, very often, because of financial difficulties And that the answer to this is to continue their financial difficulties by monetarily enslaving them to a machine that capitalizes on their misery and does everything that it can to keep these people in this state of misery for an indefinite period of time, and all of this evil is being perpetrated upon them with the cover story that it is in order to help them, is a panacea that came straight from the very pit of hell itself The very fact that most states in the US require that people who have gotten themselves into legal trouble because of substance abuse are required to enlist in this institutionalized enslavement, makes me want to vomit
Comment from : Jay Somewhereinflyoverterritory

Darqueyes
Is this information available in book format? I would like to send it to a friend, currently incarcerated, on domestic violence offenses that were directly tied to over drinking
Comment from : Darqueyes

How about you offer a positive outlook, this doesn't help anyone Smh If you're not part of the solution you're part of the problem I don't get people who knock everything but can't offer any real help I couldn't even listen to the whole video The negativity turned me off
Comment from : Tye

Jeff DiPaolo
This is some serious BS If you are struggling, look up the meetings in your area and go to one A few steps talk about God "as we understood him" They make it very clear Your "higher power" could be your parents idea of God, it could be the meetings themselves, it could be the chair in the corner
Comment from : Jeff DiPaolo

Adam Woodworth
AA does work, while it is not for everyone if you are desperate enough to follow it's simple suggestions or steps it can help you stop drinkingbrbrIt can be hard for some, it took me several times I'm head strong and at times fight the higher power ideabrbrGo to meetings, get a sponsor you can respect and work the steps

Exercise doesn't work either, unless you make an effort There is no magic wand AA showed me how to fix myself after 36 years of suffering Doctors and drugs failed miserabley
Comment from : Motogarden

Johnny Weisberger
After 38 years in AA, and sober, I know that whoever prepared this video did not spend a lot of time there AA does not preach People relate their own experiences to give strength and hope to their fellow members God is whoever or whatever you desire, Some atheists attend AA and they call GOD ''Good Orderly Direction'' or whatever Why are you stating statistics?? AA has never laid claims to recovery They merely state that if you follow the program, follow the steps and and live one day at a time, you can find sobriety As for treatment programs utilizing the AA program, while they may have a legal right to do, none of these are endorsed by AA And in ending, there is only one real solution to quitting drinking Don't take the first drink As a rule, when an alcoholic takes the first drink, he or she relapses So quit the next day and start over You will get sober if you try
Comment from : Johnny Weisberger

Lexi Anderson
For the people in aa open your eyes been in aa just 2 weeks and can see already people in 5-10_15 years still ask their sponsor when they can shit and still consider them self an alcoholic they teach you you'll never have control you'll always be an alcoholic you can't do it by yourself every single time you go to a meeting nothing but Doom and Gloom have you heard this one yet it's out in the parking lot doing push-ups just waiting for you there's no positivity all you have to do is Google Orange Papers oh I forgot about the high suicide rates and it's not a religion but it talks about God I believe over 100 times in 164 first pages of the big book don't worry you're being alcoholic the rest your life if it's up to them don't forget keep coming back
Comment from : Lexi Anderson

Travels from doodah
I was raised by my grandparents, who were recovering alcoholics, I've had it instilled in me my whole lifethat being said I have 7 dui's been through treatment 9 timeswhat I've personally noticed is even if someone gets sober through the program , their basic personally and behavior doesn't I'm sober today I don't count my sober day's I don't rehash my past or make amends And I believe I'm the only one in control of my destiny AA has worked for alot of people, but there is a few of us a minority that has to seek out our own way I'm one of those people My motto live every day like it's your lastand I don't need to be drunk to have an adventure
Comment from : Travels from doodah

Don Mofo
I believe there are such hypocrites!! They say it's not about religion it's about spirituality and whatever you believe in as a higher power that it could be a doorknob But yet they hold hands and pray the Lord's Prayer at the end of a meeting And you know what I pray with the rosary I believe in God, but I don't believe in God fixing my problem that I made for myself I believe in myself fixing it so screw AA and na, they're a bunch of damned hypocrites
Comment from : Don Mofo

Throes*brbrAlso, I can't take this seriously as it's made by another, competing program Of course you'll lambast the competitor Yall don't have to slam AA to get people sober too If AA doesn't work, they'll organically try your program if it's around This seems slimy
Comment from : aqua snek

ave y
Very faulty, small sample size she's referring to Unsound flimsy reasoning Let people see what work and what doesn't I speak for myself and at least 30 of my friends when I say that open-mindedness might save your life If you're suffering, seek a friend, not an authority figure with a couple weak statistics
Comment from : ave y

K Scan
Its this simplea non alcoholic woman writes a book about alcoholism with no real life experience of being an alcoholic, well you are never going to truly understand alcoholism when that is all you can bring to the tableThe reason why AA works is because one alcoholic can readily identify with another in a heart beat this is something this woman could never be able to grasp no matter how many graphs and statistics she could devourIn fact she is doing a dis service to potential newcomersshe is clueless
Comment from : K Scan

Comment from : Warren

MdNt_RaMbLe
There’s no problem with AA, if it works for you, great If it doesn’t, it doesn’t It doesn’t hurt, bottom line is if you want to stop or not And you’re wrong about addicts helping addicts, no Matter how many college degrees you have, you can’t relate I’ve seen it work for 100’s of people, and I’m not a big AA advocate burn You’re just pushing naltrexone, which is terrible
Comment from : MdNt_RaMbLe

Jason Knodle
See the 12 steps only work if you do the 12 steps honestly There is actually a chapter in the book called HOW IT WORKS follow the instructions exactly and see what happens Problem is AA has become soft and rely heavily on human reliance instead of from a higher power This type of video is what happens when a Dr or Scientists with no addition problem studies a program they don't understand
Comment from : Jason Knodle

I found being in AA made me extremely completely I checked it out and been to many different meetings Never worked for me I find Smart recovery is much better

The Truth Channel
As an alcoholic, battling this disease for 36 years, this woman is truly on to something I’ve known that the rehabs are money grabs forever A six day at home detox with Valium is about all the medical community can do $1000 should do that Cravings that take place in the brain are insurmountable Mine have returned at 25 years 475 years and several times just after the 1 year mark This time it’s been 14 years Not a single craving Not one If it had I would have drank I don’t HAVE a choice I’m sober , productive, have my own business and a puppy I take a substance that has no “high” It’s not a benzodiazepine It’s safe It’s legal and I owe my life to God who directed me to it Be it known that IF some smaller drug agency was to discover a cure for cravings, The larger firms would buy and shelve the product That may have already happened AA worked until it didn’t The unity was helpful and I’m thinking of returning Why? Because last month while watching Peaky Blinders, Tommy Shelby threw back an Irish whiskey and I could literally TASTE it in my mouth after 14 years My last drink was sadly, mouthwash Last year, I paid income tax on $66 million If I took a drink and was still alive in 18 months, everything I own in this world would be gone This is the big leagues I have the substance that rids alcoholics of cravings The $35 billion rehab corporation would kill me if I let it be known

Høgni Poulsen
My life was a total disaster before I actually worked the stepsbrFor years I went in and out of AA and it was a total failure, until I actually did the workbrI’m 4 years sober and life’s amazingbrbrSo, did AA fail when I didn’t work the program all those previous times?brNo, of course not brIt was my responsibility all alongbrbrHer reasoning is flawd, the program is overwhelmingly successful, but very few work it You can’t contribute AA the failures of those who don’t work the program and only sit around at meetings
Comment from : Høgni Poulsen

Kaz Kazimierz
I have been in AA since 1981 I don't know if it saved my life, but it is where I learned that the answer to my drinking problem was to not drink

This assessment takes everything about Alcoholism and attempts to make AA responsible for all the failures of individuals that did not follow the program as witten AA doesn't propose it is the end all be all of recovery and is not connected to any of the other sources this person mentions in her research She also excuses the drunk from any responsibility for their behavior and recovery All the negative brThings your read about AA look to excuse abusers and scapegoat AA for their inability to accept responsibility for their actions and absence of real attempts at recovery
Comment from : 4afreeworld1

My 10 years in AA were tough, i had to go every single day to a meeting This is how this works Old timers told me to be patient all will be good And it is
