I love the spectacular grand staircase Comment from : Kevin Hanson |
Tragic that some of these houses get demolished However to afford to maintain them in this day and age is prohibitively expensive Most people don’t have that kind of money Thank goodness photos exist to at least see what they looked like Comment from : Jean Berard |
Are you listening jlo and ban affleck with your stupid 64 mil house Comment from : carol clark |

I personally think its tacky, also trying to imitate real French and English castles or mansions Awful what new money tried to do Comment from : isabella marais |
"and charles lindburgh a pilot from st louis"😂 Comment from : nathan bohn |
Certainly in England this was a similar case, a mixture of post war, changes in women's rights, social and economic mobility from the working classes, capital collapses in investment and poor management, family disputes, and increased changes to costs of maintaining such large decaying properties all played a part, without a plan these huge estates would become an albatross to anyone who inherited such a place So many properties here were also built on forms hierarchy and slavery and with so many men going to war they lost alot of their labour force as well It's vast extravagance but also great beauty, sad yes but the people who owned them had a responsibility and maybe in the end it was just too much for some Comment from : Megan Hulatt |
126 servants Wow Comment from : Ryan Powerhouse |
absolutely tragic Comment from : trayTable |
What an absolute shame!! In England we have something called The National Trust which buys property like this & preserves it, so paying members of the public can go visit ect Shocking how much American history has been lost, a wicked shame!! Comment from : NeoGirl37 |
This was very interesting I grew up on the North Shore of Long Island and people always speculated about which house was the "Gatsby mansion" Now I know There was another house called, Land's End (Sands Point), and legend had it that Fitzgerald wrote some of the "Great Gatsby" while he stayed there This mansion was supposed to be razed about 10 years ago to make way for smaller plots William Randolph Hearst also had a mansion at the very tip of Sands Point which also was eventually torn down Supposedly, Orson Welles had him in mind when he filmed "Citizen Kane" It would be great to hear the story of that mansion Comment from : noname noname |

I grew up on Long Island and feel a deep sense of loss when the destruction of the fabulous estates are mentionedI wish more of them would have been saved, but all good things must come to an end and at least we have a few that survived along with gardens and photos Comment from : Virginia Gobetz |

I’m surprised there wasn’t an historical society that could save the house but it was soon after the war and ppl probably had bigger fish to fry Did they at least save some of the fixtures or artistic works ? Sad Comment from : Mrs Blue Sky |
I've recently discovered your channel and find it fascinating As an English woman I never realised how many interesting old houses there were - and are- in the US This appealed to me especially as I love the Great Gatsby, it's one of my favourite American novels Comment from : TheDativeCase |

That’s pitiful I wish the US would have saved it and turned it into a historical place to tour, especially since it was known to be the inspiration for the Great Gatsby Comment from : kathleen anderson |
3:47 "Charles Lindbergh a pilot from St Louis, Missouri" Really?! (said sarcastically) 😒 Comment from : Datsun 210 |
The Great Gatsby lived in a mansion that was on waterfront property, not on the top of a hill Daisy lived in a mansion that was also on the waterfront Gatsby could see her house when he stood on the west side of his lawn and looked across the water both houses were on peninsulas that were surrounded by the Long Island soundbrJay Gould had a house near there, that still stands but is surrounded by dozens of smaller houses that were built on his estate Comment from : Tirebiter |

Such a sad ending to such a magnificent story! 😢 The house should still stand in time with the rest of History where it rightfully belongs! 400 houses!! Screw those inglorious hippies with bushes under their armpits an pink hair! We want History! Not new homes! Comment from : High Class |
Why would you preserve a tacky replica of a European mansion 🤮🤮 Comment from : stringer 2295 |

So sad that it couldnt be saved and repaired what a loss Comment from : Lorie Postlewaite |
Too bad they did not turn it into a boarding house, small hotel or old fashioned bed and breakfast 80,000 SF 52 bedrooms Or ÷ it into 4 20,000 SF condos, or 8 10,000 SF condos Or apartments Or along term care medical facility for wealthy elderly people Or a business building with multiple offices add elevators at each end SOMETHING! Comment from : Jeanette Shaw Redden |

too bad the house couldn't have been portioned into some really cool loft apartments instead of demolished I would love to live on a property like that only not such a big house Comment from : jphzzzz |
I read this awful novel in high school i thought that Daisy was a spoiled brat and needed a severe beating to wake her up from her incredibly selfish daze and I thought her husband was a really messed up dude, needing a severe wakeup call to the reality around him I was not surprised at the end, not a bit! They both lived in a never- to- happen day dream The awful waste was totally staggering!! I suppose people have actually lived this way, but no persons I know ever have! Comment from : Patricia Long |
The Fitzgerald's lived and honeymooned in Westport, CT and the house still stands Comment from : grandmammy anny |

So wild I opened the link because I, like many, love The Great Gatsby! Only to learn that it was funded by John Mackey from VC, Nevada I grew up there lol It’s such a weird tourist town with so much history I moved away before high school, but I feel privileged to have had such an amazing childhood that did not include falling into a mine shaft like a lot of kids did before me 😬 Comment from : GJC |
It’s truly so sad that some of these are such landmarks and just wiped out But it is pretty amazing to know that you have a home built on a parcel that has so much history! Comment from : Conductor Janks |
A waste of money 💰💰💰 Comment from : Charlotte Butler |
The destruction of this piece of art makes me so sad and literally sick Comment from : Melba Bowen |
Unfortunately, needing so many servants to maintain the properties caused the end of these properties Comment from : Laurie Flick8nger |
Sadly, these majestic houses are like gilded cages for their future owners Hence, most will sell them off since maintenance itself can amount to their networth I wish it was kept as some sort of museum or events place similar to those chateaus or country houses you see in europe Comment from : ghgmary |
Fortunately, many of the grand houses in Newport, Rhode Island are still standing They used Rosecliff and Marble House for the 1974 film version of Gatsby Comment from : Jonna Robinson |
What a waist such a beautiful house brI love this channel brThank you 🙏 Comment from : serge louis sieben |
The 1974 film adaptation was filmed in two of the Mansion in Newport RI You can still tour them It is amazing how opulent these houses are The two used for the 1974 film were Rosecliff and Marble housebrbrMarble House was built for some of the Vanderbilt’sbrbrIf you do go visit them make sure to stop at The Breakers (not related to the film but one of the best mansions there)brbrFor some odd reason, the 2013 version was filmed in Australia Comment from : K Rab |
It is a sad fact that many old homes in the US gets demolished without any thought of preserving any historical significance it may have It is different in Europe where they stop construction of new homes and buildings if they were to find historical artifacts in the area The mansion would’ve been a haven for art today Comment from : JaymeeD |
I'm confused They built the house or the house was gifted to them and they retrofitted it? Comment from : J R |
400 homes why not keep this one in the centre and convert it for other use? such as waste and all the interiors and decors are gone, Comment from : XY BAI |
If I were a millionaire, I would jump at the chance to purchase this beautiful estate I would restore the home and all the property to its former glory and open it as “The Great Gatsby” museum It's heartbreaking to see an actual one-of-a-kind property disappear under hundreds of mundane look-alike houses in a box Comment from : Patty Lanenga |
I was stationed at Roslyn ANG station for 6 years back in the 1980’s I knew there once was a mansion there but never knew the history of it Thanks for filling in the blanks Comment from : John F |
Only Americans would sell such a historical landmark and demolish it only to build 400 smaller huts Comment from : Eliana |
Another Stanford White masterpiece Comment from : chuckschilling |
Do not build these monumental, beautiful homes unless you plan to save them from your heirs A maintenance trust must be included in one's last will and testament Comment from : Curtis Hawkins |
i am so sad Comment from : mayrni bird |
A staff of over a hundred? Raze it to the ground was the right thing to do Comment from : Denis Perez |
What would a family even do all day in this home? Crazy how it was built as a “gift” What’s more sad is that craftsmanship is erased forever along with the natural flora and fauna that previously existed in this area Comment from : Country Antiques |
New to your channel and am so far thrilled with your work I’d love to see more of these historical videos if you can work it Comment from : cody rasmussen |
