This video makes me very emotional in both good and bad ways the bad ways are that I just feel for the homeless people in this video wishing I could help them and the feeling of them hurting and feeling it just makes me hurt inside too because it’s that emotional and sad and the good ways are that it shows that i myself am a good person deep down inside and care about the well being of others and care enough to want to help them in any way possible and also speaking of homeless people I have a friend who’s homeless that I briefly met on the streets and I befriended her that day and it’s a long story but all that matters is that she’s a close friend of mine and that’s how connected I feel to her

If you do choose to give a gift card, make sure it's to somewhere that could have a lot of things that the person needs (an ice cream shop is a bad idea), and consider bang for your buck and how close something is For instance, don't give a $10 whole foods gift card- that's going to get them, what, one granola bar there? Also, CVS may be five minutes away for you in your car, but it's five miles of walking for a homeless person A Visa gift card is usually best They function like credit cards, but are loaded with money like gift cards

I once fell in love with someone who had recovered from heroin addiction and had lived on the street He told me heroin stops you feeling, so you're freed from the unbearable pain of existence In his situation anyone would turn to whatever allowed them to escape for a while He also told me not to give money to homeless people because if everyone had done that for him he would be dead I couldn't bear the thought of someone I love dying on the street so I stopped giving money to homeless people Was that a cruel thing to do? I've distributed food as a volunteer and donated money but am I still hurting people?

man the comments on here are DEPRESSING so much prejudice i was one of those teens pushed out by their family i was lucky enough to meet good people and have a skill, so i sold my own artwork and we traveled the whole country on the money we made for years until i was able to settle down safely i would make friends with the unhoused here on my way into a store at first, i would offer them extra food i bought, but one person with very bad teeth finally explained that not evryone can just eat anything for a dellot/del of reasons so i switched tactics to saying, is there anything you need? one wanted coconut oil for his dogs skin condition one man in a wheelchair seemed especially down one day he wanted a super size sprite i asked him why and he said it was his sons birthday and the sprite reminded him of his son brbrits not easy being unhoused here and there are a lot of deaths in that community because the safety net is so thin one i got to be good friends with he was a vet his hair was matted into one big knot one day i gave him $20 and the next time i saw him he had a neat hair cut i hate the stereotype about giving people money and honestly when i was first homeless me and my partner would sometimes find $5 a day max and have to split that between us on all our expenses many days we just bought a pint of haagen dasz cause why the hell not its so depressing being in that situation brbrnow that covid has ripped through this idiotic college town i have looked in vain for my former friends i dont know if they moved, if they are still alive the cops regularly break up the tent villages and literally throw away peoples things right in front of them one time i saw my vet friend and alll his stuff was gone and his face was red and swelled up i knew the cops had beaten him up and taken his stuff i offered to help him replenish his stuff and he refused saying why have it when the cops just beat you up and take it he seemed so down and every time i saw him i gave him $20 but i dont know where he is and i think about him a lot brbrits terrible here im ashamed of my town, my country and honestly reading these comments, a great many of my fellow citizens who need their brainwashing undone brbrevery single one of you is just one job loss, one health crisis, one bad break away from being there so give your snobbery a rest it makes you look like a terrible person

We all need to share more, listen more, give more But I'm not sure downplaying the very real issues with alcoholism, drugs and aggressive behaviors that SOMETIMES occur is the answer to being more compassionate Volunteering hours in a shelter or soup kitchen or food pantry is a good place for most people to start From there, you can begin to see the humanity in your homeless neighbor and understand that, but for the grace of God (or luck or fate or whatever belief you have), it could be you More comfort interacting with people who are suffering difficulty in their lives leads to more volunteerism, which is criticalbrbr Negative interactions with homeless people DO exist Having food or a warm drink thrown back in your face, having someone curse you when you don't give cash or when you offer to take them to a convenience store for hygiene items, etc is harsh and nobody wants to go through that twice Mocking people who are concerned that their donation not go to support a habit that is ruining a life is not likely to encourage them to be more compassionate It only increases the divide Let's be compassionate to everyone We can only do better when we feel heard and understood, whether we are someone who is facing homelessness or someone who is trying to help but does has heard things that give them pause
