I grade my own coins If I tell you my 1989 penny that looks like it was in the ground for 25 years is worth $30,000 dollars, be grateful I'm only asking $25,000 dollars I slab my own coins as well I like to stick my coins inside of a small "arts & craft" ziplock bag that you can get from Walmart for under $3 for a pack of 100ct Just be grateful that I didn't use the free second-hand paper bag that came with my 40oz Colt 45 I got from the liquor store

Acoustic Shadow
Well, I just bought two Morgans via eBay, both coins purchased from sellers I had never bought from in the past (yeah, I know - but both had great feedback) One coin was described as "gorgeous", the other coin was described as "a beauty!" Eye Loupe revealed both coins as having been WHIZZEDgrrr Moral of the story? Well, aside from don't buy coins from unknown online sellers, I think I may stick to PCGS slabs Yes, they could be fake PCSG slabs, but am betting that's relatively scarce, and in direct contrast to the amount of misrepresented CLEANED/WHIZZED coins offered in online venues - which unfortunately, seems to be aplenty

Jabshier1980
Lately I been buying slabbed Morgan dollars with CAC stickers they do hold a secondary market price range of their own … but again buy the coin and not slab we all heard that saying … but market wise I always was able to to sell a Slabbed coin with CAC sticker quicker and buy an upgraded coin to replace the one I’ve sold its way I’ve been seeing market since CAC first started stickering coins… I do trust CAC sticker… John Albanese started CAC he graded for NGC I believe he help founded PCGS back in the days he looked and graded more coins than I’ve ever looked at in my lifetime… that’s one reason to collect slabbed coins with CAC sticker
Comment from : Jabshier1980

Comment from : Rooster

MarkSD56
I love raw coins If I buy a slabbed coin, I break the coin out as soon as it arrives to my house In fact I love middle to lower quality coins because of their character I have a 1903 Morgan on the way that’s coming out of its slab, same with a 26s Buffalo nickel And I’m also on a fixed income and have no ability to buy $250/300/500 coins Best Regards
Comment from : MarkSD56

johnLA1961
grading companies are a sham Now NGC has its own grading scale
Comment from : johnLA1961

lkayh
It depends what you collect I collect toners, and artificial toning is a serious concern There are times when artificial toning will be obvious, but there are also some better methods that turn out VERY legit-looking toners The slab just makes me confident that the coin is worth the premium I’m paying for the toning
Comment from : lkayh

Rooster
I’m really new to coin collecting What coin would you buy to pass onto your grandchildren? In the $200 range
Comment from : Rooster

Dr Thomas Rasberry
0 You can buy OBVIOUS > MS 60 coins for MS 60 price (or if you're in with my LCS, AU 58) especially if your LCS dealer is (a) good at spotting like this guy, (b) experienced at detecting cleaned coins, environmental or accidental damage vs planchet or lamination problems, legit PLs and even "semi-PLs" or one-siders, etc combined with some beatiful toning, all for a minimal 10-20 kickup since he's using MS-60 (or AU-58 if you're cool with him and he's in a good mood that day) as the pricing standard instead of MS 62-64+ brbrI just paid $65 for an immaculate 1882-S PL that I KNOW is at least an MS-63 even with only 5 months or so of experience and just a couple thousand spent on Morgans both slabbed and unslabbed under my belt, and I threw down $50 for a MS 60-61 1979-S PL with a history of violence for poor Liberty's face and the left side of the obverse field, but with a second-to-none reverse with the best toning I've ever seen on top of PL mirrors that did not have the same tough life that the flip side has had If the 1882-S and maybe even the 1879 were in a PCGS or NGC slab, he would have slapped three digits or close to it on there as per his guide, but he ALWAYS bases his unslabbed coins at the price of at most MS-60, which means a much smaller percent kickup for PL and toning than the guide recommends for even an MS-62 with the same numismatic qualities brbrIn short, at least my LCS assesses for a "worst case scenario" condition to price his unslabbed uncirculated coins, and if you buy anything with a numismatic upgrade that would have rocked a higher percent upsell if he went with the condition he knows the coins are ACTUALLY in, THAT price difference represents a reason to not buy slabbed right there

Nice exploration of slabbing mention of breathing and sneezing is an interesting one, especially when watching video of NGC graders at work without masks! How is that happening? I've owned slabbed coins for decades, and when I purchased them they were GEM, and now all these years later they have spots, clearly they were breathed upon, either by the original owner or the grader The coin dealer from whom I regularly bought coins back in the day warned me of this, so if possible I try to buy coins slabbed many years ago I do wonder how many years after being slabbed a coin can reasonably be declared SAFE from the potential for spots showing up
Comment from : C A Logan

Jim
You would think the US government would pressure the Chinese government to put a stop to it Since China is a totalitarian regime they could stop any counterfeiting in a heartbeat Early American currency had the motto To counterfeit is dea

Ryan Lennon
Thinking about starting a coin collection Question- if a coin is in a plastic case by pcgs or ngc is it safe to assume that it’s real and not a fake? Been watching a lot of videos on how to get started and I have also come across a lot of videos on how to spot fakes I don’t want to even deal with fakes so should I just buy coins in plastic cases?
Comment from : Ryan Lennon
