To my fellow writers: you should absolutely go beyond “adding some words and there ya go” on your website/portfolio page😅 It’s maybe the most important place to showcase your skills And it’s a potential difference maker as fas as getting hired Make it benefit driven Don’t talk about yourself too much Focus on what you offer but frame it in a way that shows how you help clients Research potential clients’ pain points and turn them into compelling benefits Include a CTA The copy you write here may be some of the most valuable copy you ever write, so make it count! Spend a few days on it at least Or a week Or two (Also, don’t say “if not, that’s cool!” in your cold outreach Big mistake I would never hire a writer who used such classically weak verbiage There are more creative ways to “soft sell” yourself without coming across as being overly “sales-y”) Overall pretty great video! Ok ok This is a fantastic video with really great tips But I have questions As someone trying to break into freelance writing, even looking on websites offering spots for writers, EVERYONE wants proper credentials They want to see extensive samples and lists of published work They want alllll the details And as beginners, let's face it, we've got none Even getting into crap sites like Upwork, they want a proper job title and CV Not everyone as that, even if we have a desire and maybe a tiny skill in writing brHow in the world do we over come this, and not just give up because we don't all have the same level of privilege and are trying very hard to build just that Everyone seems to have a strong fancy background in corporate careers already So is this something that is truly for the already successful? Great video Although one thing I never believed in was the importance of choosing a niche And I still don't If you look at the greatest copywriters in history, they all wrote for businesses in a wide variety of industries Gary Halbert, Joe Sugarman, David Ogilvy etc They never limited themselves to a specific industry Because the principles of copywriting are foundational And once you know the science of how to sell in print, you can use this science to sell ANYTHING brbrContent writing? Upwork is a major PITA, agreed Not for beginners I've spent so many hours there, working on my pitches - and twice they ended up being scams Do not do a Skype interview through Upwork It is against their TOS The people behind those ads are going to try to get some money out of you In my case, they wanted me to pre-pay shipping for a new Apple laptop so I could get started right away They claimed that it will have the writing tools needed to do the work Wrong
