My first experience of the Maria Theresa thaler was at an American mountain man rendezvous Turtle explained it too me that when European traders went sailed to Africa, with newly minted thalers, the locals did want to accept them because they thought they were countafiet because the date had been changed So, the Austrians continued to mint them with the original date I still continue to carry one in my "possible pouch" after oxidizing it with water and blackpowder, so that if I need something for a blanket shoot, I can thow it down as a trade item and will probably get it back after the shoot ;) The competitors think it is a cheap reproduction of a historical coin Comment from : Ken Walker |

I'm up to 32 Maria Theresa Thaler restrikes Don't see them often but when I do I pick them up Thalers were used to fund the British battles in Abyssinia against mad king Tewodros Probably the most expensive hostage rescue mission in history There's a fantastic novel called Flashman on the March which puts a fictional anti-hero in various historical situations and the novel goes into quite a bit of detail about how vital Thalers were in the campaign The author also wrote some of the Bond movies and served in the British Army fighting the JapanesebrbrThe reason the MT Thaler was popular in West Africa was down to her low cut dress and ample assets in a part of the world where a specific religion decreed that the ladies covered up Comment from : Gunnar Gundersen |

I have 11 of these and they are a beautiful coin to hold and very tactile It would have to be one of my favorite silver coins to own One way to distinguish the restrike is to look at the reverse and if it has the inscription "AVST" it's a restrike as the original coins have "AUST" There are a lot of people on eBay using misleading descriptions describing them as "original" and "rare" 1780's coins and wanting ridiculous amounts for them Just a quick looks now shows someone wanting AU$600 (I live in Australia) for a restrike, conveniently forgetting to disclose that bit of information Hopefully your video will help some people avoid getting tricked if they want to buy one Comment from : SteelHand |
