Watching this triggered a recollection of a seminar I saw maybe 20 years ago at the University of Central Florida from computer programmer who worked for one of the big companies (EA maybe) who made video games for play station I was stunned to learn that they had created their own middle and high schools to educate future computer programmers and game creators because the standard public schools were not producing enough high school graduates with the self directed agency and competency to meet their projected business growth models Now it all makes sense Great interview!

This school sounds very much like a 'Free School ' program I participated in while in 5-7th grades in the 70's I went to my usual gradeschool except for Wednesdays There were kids from all over Chicago and Facilitators, but we were left to study whatever we wanted and if we needed help, there were older kids or a Teacher to help In 5th or 6th grade, my regular school teacher called my mother to say that he didn't think I should be reading 'Great Expectations ' She told him that if the book was Beyond my grasp, I would be BORED and quit reading

You guys are 40years late We've been doing everything you're talking about here for decades and the level completly collapsed And those who suffer most from it of course are the middle and lower classes - back in the days they were 30 of our elite universities, today they are 3 brbrHere are sure and simple ways to improve school before even trying to revolutionnize it:brHaving competent teachers payed to their level of qualification - that can be fired and that can punish students and get them on disciplinary councils to get them expelled if they go too farbrHaving fewer kids per classes brHaving classes by level

If I had to learn only what my mum knew I would never have had a good education and would not have got any of the jobs I had As it was, I had a massively better education than my parents had, have two first class Masters degrees and always had good jobs with plenty of interest and autonomy and decent pay

My granddaughter is 8 years old, in the 3rd grade of public school She easily reads on a high school level, but the teacher still makes her read books like "See Spot Run" and "Dick and Jane" beginner books

Beware! I left Montessori school not being able to count…spent the next 12 years trying to catch up I did but my God it wasn’t funny I was way ahead of my peers in reading & languages & practical (use of hands) skills But math…Montessori isn’t great with math

I'm a public school high school teacher in California Many of us are enabling dynamic student based learning communities in our school and having success A major difference in our constituents is that we are required to take in everyone and have many students who are learning disabled or have ed plans and many of our students are homeless I'm proud of the people our school turns out, though I do wish we had a higher percentage of high level learners However, when you see that many of them live no where (as in tents, other family's couches) one can understand

Most people don't realize the school period is the period that forms a person that shapes a kid into a person with characteristics This is the most important period for someone to develop to become who they will become and it's formed by the people around them parents family situations And way more things that forms a kid, most of the time parents will teach there kids how they learned it without thinking about long term result, just think about it you tell your kid a bully is bad and school has to be done or fruits have to be eaten, that's not interesting for them if it is a must do, they have to understand why they do it why they eat fruits not only by saying it's healthy cause they don't value health at such an age, Instead try to give them vision of what happens to your energy level or your mood give them examples of bad result when you don't eat healthy what will happen They will think owh I dont want that it don't want to be fat and bullied so I eat healthy

Student-directed learning has been on the menu for many years here in NYC It is poorly realized for many reasons: logistical challenges within and outside of the school, lack of commitment, lack of agreement concerning standards and measurements of success, etc brFrankly, I don’t buy any of the package presented in this video I want some very simple things for my children and my students: a calm school environment with a focus on actual content, tactile experiences instead of screens, and sacred, uninterrupted time for reading, writing, and structured discussion The adults need to project a serious, professional tone and have high expectations No bells and whistles, please Save the self-directed approach for advanced learners and experts There is plenty of joy to be found in a a structured classroom

I am glad people are trying new things in schooling because i agree that what we are doing now does not seem like the right thing to create innovative people which is what i think we need I am just not sure that a kid led education really makes sense to me I can see the good things in this, but there is way too much language game in it Learner vs student and Guide vs teacher and a whole lot more language things that Jordan is translating I don't like language games, so i am not really sure about thatbrbrAlso, a love of reading is great I think learning to write and order your thoughts is just as important I actually think that it might be more difficult for kids who grew up in this to actually work with people in the real world I think apprentices into real works is great I am open to the experiment, but i am not sure that this is exactly what you want in the end

I always found it very strange we as 16 years old kids had to spend 3 out of 5 working days in school from 8am to 5pm They pump us with such vast amount of information non of which I used in my factory job I found right after finished school High school was biggest waste of time of my entire life If I went working at 15 instead I could have 5 years of experience by the time I was 20brIf I knew what I know now, and it be today I have to study I'd probably go for Youtube and search educational videos about subject I am interested in And just try to get good at it Hundred times better than what any school has to offer Point in case, there are literally lectures on Youtube from universities I would never be able to attend, for free

You can’t be free without structure Without structure you have chaos The structure can be tyrannical and you might think you’ll never be free while you’re in the structure but that’s the wrong way to think about it It’s a journey of mastery and you can’t truly express yourself in a domain until after you master that domain And you can’t master a skill without structure So you might ask if there is a a better structure

I love the fact thay incurage grafikk novels reading to build the intrest in reading! I myself have dyslexia and find a full page of words intimidating, but the last year i have ben reading alot of manga (between 7-800 chapters) and got a bigger interest in reading more!
