I think it depends on your location I have a model 3 long range and live in a rural hilly/wooded area with winding back roads The regen braking makes it feel like you’re “floating” over the hills, and all the weight being in the floor makes the car quite fun in the corners But it’s really being on those back roads keeping the speed under 60 that allows you to actually have 300+ miles range If you have highway driving everyday it’ll get way less range Transmissions in internal combustion vehicles are most efficient usually around 55mph, but an EV only really has air resistance to worry about, the slower you have to drive the longer you’ll be able to go Comment from : Julianos |

Worth it? EVs are not The price difference out the door between a base Camry and base Tesla 3 in my market worked out to $20,538 Based on 12,500 miles a year and the price of gas and the efficiency of the Camry, they got to drive their car for free (gas) for 855 years till they reached the cost of the Tesla And in that same time period, the Tesla had to pay for their charging You don't need a PhD in math to figure that out Comment from : A C E |
Is the government tracking this because they keep trying to push EVs on everyone like most people can even afford them Comment from : Jay V |
Brought to you by Exxon Mobil Comment from : John Scimeca |
I use my car for work and spend 800 a month on gas and another 300 on maintenance every month My new EV payments are 600 and the charging added about 25 dollars to my monthly electric bill It was a no brainer for me I'm putting 500 dollars a month back in my pocket by owning an EV Comment from : alecia175 |
You forget to mention the most important thing… “This video is brought to you by BMW” Comment from : Rajiv S |
And all the money you spend on food and drink while waiting for your car to charge is going to cost extra And that hour you spent at the charger if you were in a gas car you would be 60 miles nearer your destination A stupid invention that will be short lived like the 8 track player and betamax VCR or cassette player etc Comment from : Robbie |
4:40 This is actually really BAD advice Cells do not all age at the same rate, and failing cells would cause the BMS to no longer be able to charge properly With poor software or specific failures, it could be a safety issue It is not just reduced range that occurs when a battery starts to fail, so it might be all just fine, until suddenly, it isn't Comment from : Adam Richardson |
I buy 20 year old cars for about $1500 dollars They usually last me about five years That’s $300 dollars a year No way I’m going to work for a year to buy a $50 000 EV to get me to a place I don’t even want to go to Lol! Comment from : Dan Grather |
You get 10 year 100k warranty on the battery These ev battery's are meant to outlast the car Comment from : Roberto Meza |
Thats why I'm buying hybrid Comment from : brownredxx |
Many governments are introducing a tax per mile/km on EVs to cover road maintenance EV owners will be slugged so hard they'll wish they'd never bought an EV I'm not anti-EV, but the math has to stack up, and once you account for these taxes it won't What scares me is everyday income people going out and buying Teslas with the good intention to save the planet What they are buying is a luxury vehicle at a price point they would never have considered otherwise, and expecting to break even after x-many years It's a debt trap and a tragedy Comment from : Galleon Dragon |
Not my tank! I drive very little and rarely buy gas Comment from : D L |
Child slave labour is involved in the hazardous processes of mining the highly toxic materials that are used in the production of EV batteries, for this single reason alone I would not feel comfortable with having an EV Comment from : Nickztx100 |

$30K EV designed for short(ish) trips, 20kWh solar, charge at home You are right Planets need to be aligned Comment from : DrDHailey |
Just about wrong on all counts Of course, EV's are more costly to buy, but it's all about your weekly running costs The battery life thing, from what I have read, people are getting over 150,000 miles in the EV's and the battery is still going strong, may have slightly less range, but for most people makes very little differencebrThere is one big one you missed, servicing, I have heard of many people with 100,000 miles on their Tesla, only changed tires and cabin filter, there is very little that needs to be serviced No oil & filter in the engine, on trans oil, no diff oil So, over a 10 year period big savings in servicing costsbrAlso, what if you have solar panels on the home roof, free power Comment from : Renegade |
It’ll eventually become cost competitive Comment from : SkidMarks |
Depreciation is extremely low for Tesla’s currently The life of a Tesla is over a million miles now A gas car goes a little over 300k on average I don’t stop to fill my car day to day It’s fully charged every morning Also gas variation can differ that much from Hawaii to California to Idaho just as much as electricity Oil changes Transmission going out belts and gas filters There is so few components on an ev To replace your engine if you want to continue driving your gas car is 6 to 10 thousand so I’m replacing a battery instead of an engine Comment from : Jared Graham |
Not only will you not save money, considering the subscriptive nature of ownership, you'll be locked into a regular yearly update 'fleecing' by the manufacturer, alongside a souless, limited, and boring driving experience Comment from : Graham Herbert |
I’m a real estate photographer I drive a total of 3-4 hours a day in between shoots, on average which is about 32,000 - 34,000 miles per year I had a Nissan Maxima up until two and a half years ago, and I was spending $550-$600 a month on gasoline, with the price of gas on average was $230 - $240 per gallon in Chicago I decided to buy a 2019 Nissan Leaf extended version, which I charge at home and now use that for commute If I had that maxima, with todays gas prices, I’d spend about $1,000 - $1,200 a month on gasoline, since the price of a gallon of gas have doubled where I’m at, compared to two years ago That $1,000-$1200 a month I’m saving on gasoline, is paying my leaf car payment, my auto insurance for my leaf, wife’s mini van and my 1949 Cadillac antique vehicle insurance, paying my electric bill at home plus I have some money left over So yea, it’s saving me a bit of money If you think about it, I’m getting paid to drive an ev car On top of all that, I don’t have to worry about oil changes, tune ups, spark plugs etc Comment from : SkyLine MultiMedia |

No body talks about the process to destroy the old battery It takes more harmful products to destroy the lithium ion battery Comment from : John Velasquez |

Electricity doesn't come from thin air ( like most EV car owners think ) it is made at the cost of even more pollution to our environment ! Wise-up people !! Comment from : Wendy |
Don't fool yourself, buying an electric car will come back and bite you in the A$$ as it did my family ! Forget Batteries ! an lets move on to a newer energy source that won't poison everybody on earth !! Comment from : Miss Gibsen |
Also $12 to fill your EV, sure, maybe if you're only using public charging the vast majority of EV owners just charge at home This can save you a ton of money especially if you charge during off peak hours, or already have a home outfitted with solar panels Comment from : Salanan |
Not to mention theres lots of EV's that are cost roughly the same or are actually more affordable than their gas counterparts Such as the Nissan Leaf, Chevy Bolt, and of course the Aptera which starts at just 26k AND is the most efficient electric vehicle ever designed Production starts in December 2022 Comment from : Salanan |
Broadly speaking, while he did not address some facts like some comments are pointing out, unless you can readily afford it Like that buying a new car isn’t something you sweat You’re better off buying an ice They are just less expensive in the long run even factoring gas, and basic maintenance (oil, coolant etc) the cheapest working beater will be cheaper than the the cheapest old ev Ev batteries are just too expensive Comment from : ItsHalo32 |
You don't ever break even with a stinking ice car Plenty electric cars are priced well now The Tesla is great All car depreciate no car is a good asset Comment from : Blaze |
most EVs come with a ten year battery warranty though Comment from : louiearmstrong |
There’s a lot of “well, sorta” here, but your final summary is reasonable: “It depends” brbrIn my case, I can charge at home at 13c per KWh Our Prius Prime (plug-in hybrid), even when gas was $220/ gallon cost about 40 less per mile than driving it on gas (in town — it doesn’t go very far on battery out on the highway)brbrFor me though, the main thing that makes me drive on electric as much as possible is not the economics as much as that EVs are, more responsive, quieter, and lower-maintenancebrbrFrankly, driving on gas has gotten to fell just plain disgusting for me! Eeew! Comment from : Gary Morrison |
You save thousands on maintenance with a ev It's still cheaper than a gas car Comment from : James Loehr |
EV fans are freaking out over this vid Love how he is just stating facts and ppl can’t handle the truth Comment from : bsmccrunner4 |
When the ICV are lawn ornaments and relics …how’s that for depreciation? Further, our budgets pale in comparison to the issue that we actually want a tolerable climate left for our children and grandchildren! Comment from : Michele Curlee |
you could get a nice ebike for a max of 10 grand and almost no maintenance hopefully biking around you can be done Comment from : evan weiner |
not blowing exhaust into pedestrian faces is kinda nice Comment from : evan weiner |
I find this to be a very biased or misinformed article Why are you comparing a regular car manufacture to a luxury car manufacture How about doing an Apples to Apples comparison Does CNET have something against Tesla? How about UNBIASED reporting Comment from : Tim K |
There's also the pleasure of not smelling exhaust, not having to go to a dirty gas station, less dealing with shady mechanics for costly repairs Huge set of peace-of-mind benefits Comment from : Eric |
No, 65usd to fill up my CRVbrbrAnd I gey 385 miles from that tank And I could do better with an ICE car Comment from : Mike Aux |
Even at $5/gallon, it takes YEARS to make up buying a more fuel efficent car It's NEVER worth it just to same money on gas Only consider it if your current car is worn out and you are getting a new car anyways Math: you drive 15,000 miles a year Your car gets 20mpg That's 750 gallons Gas cost $3/gallon You will spend $2,250/year on gas If gas is $5/gallon, you will spend $3,750/year (Or $1,500 a year more on gas with the low mpg car) Now if you can find a car that gets $40mph (twice the mpg), you will use 375 gallons At $3/gallon that's $1,125/year At $5/gallon that's $1,875/year A relative savings of $1,125 or $1,875/year br-brEnough math, let's say you'll save $2,000/year is fuel costs if you bump up to a 40mph car Average new cars cost $40,000 That means it will take 20 years to recoup your investment br-brJust not worth it Comment from : bikebudha01 |
Yea what about smog check for regular cars, oil changes, oil filters, oil leaks, thousand dollar radiators blowing out, head gaskets, tube replacements, etc? Comment from : Matthew Viramontes |
Incorrect, if your purchasing a car anyway, an EV may make sense Long commutes, ability to charge for free at many sites including ding work(like my employer) make my commute almost free Almost 0 maintenance, my battery has a 10 year, 100,000 mile warranty, and Toyota Prius has shown that batteries last longer than originally anticipated Comment from : racekar80 |
How long did it take for gas station infrastructure to catch up to the new ICE 100 years ago? Comment from : Mark R |
This is irresponsible With the amount of polution produced by petrol engines in the world we should be encouraging people to do whatever it takes to help the environment Afterall, when you look after the environment it will look after you Yes EVs are more expensive now because it's a relatively new technology but in time, like you know with any tech being that you're a tech channel the price will go down as the masses latch onto it When you say something like oh maybe you can save the environment in other areas, that's not good enough We need to do our parts on as many fronts as much as we possibly can Getting an EV should be a no brainer regardlessbrbrAlso comparing the depreciation of a Tesla with Suburu which is a cheaper car category is a disingenuous comparison It's not a fair comparison People who can afford to buy a Tesla can also afford such cars like Audi or Mercedes Benz To be fair, you should be comparing the depreciation with those cars rather than a Suburu which is already cheap to begin withbrbrYou also failed to mention the ongoing cost of petrol cars too My mate had an Audi and initially didn't factor in that when you get an Audi serviced you can't just go to any mechanic, you have to get it serviced by Audi which costs thousands of dollars, not to mention that potential cost of repair should the engine fail you He sold it cos those ongoing costs are way more than he ever anticipated Why did you not talk about that? Again it makes your argument less genuine when you don't mention the negative factors of owning a petrol car Comment from : Mark |
I LOVE my EV No more dirty gas pump handles to grab I charge at home off my solar No oil changes, no exhaust repairs, no transmission repairs Wiper blades, tires, washer fluid and brakes are only maintenance ever done The brakes last 100k miles because of regenerative braking brLOL oMG there's more benefits, I go right past the gas station/connivence stores I like most EV owners, charge at home Like your cell phone, full charge every am Comment from : FrostyGT |
To buy an EV you have to find an EV so, yeah Comment from : Robert D |
Electric cars start their day with a full battery We only need to stop for 20-30 minutes after we've driven for 3+ hours For me that's once every 3-6 months How often do you have to go to a gas station? Comment from : Calen Kennett |
I love you man… your transparency is amazing… and we need a pillar of dependability like you out here… keep up the amazing work 🤍 Comment from : Mike Mike |
and you will definitely save money by driving internal combustion engine cars? Comment from : yootoober2009 |
Most stoopid review by CNET Comment from : kingofiit |
I want to see your spreadsheet on the Total Cost of Ownership that shows the real numbers for TCO My S with a SWAG for depreciation shows about 30¢/mile My wonderful Mercedes diesel was $50¢/mi Show me the Tesla at 58, I want to buy several to resell where I live Here a 10 year old Tesla is easily 50 of new Comment from : BlackhawkPilot |
Not to mention, which you didn’t, cost of maintenance… and what if you’ve gone solar? Does it save even more brTrue, everyone has different reasons to chose EV… in the future may be more factors which you hasn’t touched on brLooking forward to seeing next year video on this topic🤗👍🏻 Comment from : Ron DeSombre |
I have a 2006 Mini Cooper and it's had a new engine, and three new batteries (and a new transmission, new power steering pump, new engine mounts, several other new components) over it's lifetime Electrics have less components to fail and the fuel costs are near $12,000 a year vs $2,000 a year for an electric and that's with gas prices at $298 / gal Comment from : Brett Heppes |
Yes, you will save the money using EV, no need to watch video for that Comment from : default |
What about an autocycle like the ElectroMeccanica Solo, or Arcimoto FUV? The oil, gas, and auto industry has had more than one hundred years to place a yoke on society Change will be difficult yet necessary The time is ripe for a disruption in the way we think about mobility Comment from : Barnabas Seadog |
Has CNET seen the price of used Teslas? Comment from : michael palmer |
Wow! What a one sided video without covering all the factsbrLost my respect with this one Comment from : Lorraine Hinchliffe |
With today's technology, and EV is basically totalled after 15 years Most likely even closer to 10 years Seems wasteful to me Comment from : MJorgy5 |
$50 or less to drive my EV6 a month and i charge for free at work I got my EV because driving my Mazda 9 the same distance for work was $900 a month even prior to the gas hike So, I'm no mathematician, but $900 > $50 I'm saving over $10,000 a year in fuel costs Very, very satisfied Comment from : Kish Kin |
- why he didnt compare cars of same value for depriaciation?br- how about maintenance, oil, that 5k repair of the gear box that neede 2 weeks?br- time! In reality you dont need to go to a station to charge Do it at home Comment from : Benjamín Prieto |
This smacks of disingenuous disinformation Batteries are guaranteed for 8 years and people’s experience is 12 to 14 years I wonder how much the oil industry pays you for half truths and fact omissions? Comment from : Don Vetro |
Maybe some of us are not looking to save money but save the planet! Comment from : André Fortin |
A better title would be "You May Not Save Money By Driving An Electric CAR" Technically, an e-bike is an electric vehicle, but doesn't have all the negatives that an electric car has Comment from : JeepGuy91 |
My dad and I were having this discussion a few days ago Comment from : KSIX |
Our power bill has just jumped up again I don't even turn on the air unless it's really needed I also don't want to spend my life going from charging station to charging station Resale is almost zero$ My 10 year old Honda is still worth more than 1/2$ I paid in 2012 How about the fire situation? Comment from : Epy Taffs Kitchen |
I love the EV lovers because they are helping "the cause" which will eventually make EVs make sense and "affordable" Meanwhile I will stick to my 3 ICE ICE baby vehicles Comment from : Alfredo R |
I am sorry to say your video does not have real life 2022 values Your costs and analysis especially on Tesla seem to be more based on fiction than fact I bought a Tesla about 2 years ago I can actually sell it for about $15,000 more than what I bought it for now Also, I have had no Maibtence costs during that time Not to mention I also have Solar power so I have no gas fees or electric fees You failed to mention that Tesla also warrantee’s the battery for something like 8 years or 100,000 miles How may of the gas motor companies do that? As far as environment Yes, you wan to see your grandkids enjoy the blue skies that you enjoyed? Get rid of your Gas guzzlers EV is the future and the logical step It’s sad to see people putting out false information like your video Shame on you! Comment from : Perry S |
This is not a great analysis Battery do wear out Let’s say after 10 years you need a new one OK After 10 years in your gas car you’ll likely need a new transmission Compare those cost brbrDepreciation I guess if you believe the formulas it’s bad for EV But seriously, look up the price of a used Tesla The best I can find is a 5 year old Tesla Model S currently will cost you about $50K Where is the depreciation? brbrIt used to be that the cost of the EV was more expensive than a gas car, but now it isn’t much Let’s price my Hyundai Ioniq 5 I paid $52k for it If I were to get a comparably equipped SUV, let’s say a Tucson, it would still cost around $45k Sure that’s a little less but you are also paying for oil changes and other maintenancebrbrThe best I can figure, I will have the break-even point on my car in about 15 years If gas stays high, it could be shorter If it drops like a stone, maybe it will be longer Of course, I don’t charge at a public charger except for on long trips Comment from : Steve Johnson |
Anyone who says that is racist Comment from : quartytypo |
I have only been inside a Tesla modelo Y once I live in México and we're behind bye ten years Tesla is the car of the future, so , why do carmakers keep making the same garbage? Comment from : JorgeZermeno11 |
Personally, I don’t think improving the environment should be done at the expense of our fellow man Look into how cobalt, which is a primary component in EV batteries, is mined using exploited people and child labor The mining process also creates a great deal of land and water pollution I acknowledge it’s used in cellphones, laptops, etc, but an EV battery uses an enormous amount brbrI think hydroelectric vehicles are best for both mankind and the environment Toyota has a very impressive sedan, and other brands including BMW are in production Comment from : Steven |
This video will age like milk I’ll check inn in 5 years time Comment from : Benjamin Jakobsen |
I'd have to disagree on the point about EV depreciation Even before inflation took off, Teslas retained their value incredibly well compared to ICE vehicles With inflation and supply shortages, that phenomenon is even more pronounced Comment from : William Yeh |
Is it possible to charge using Solar Panels? Comment from : lukain |
Well done Brian! Excellent job with this video There are tons of variables and it’s an intensely specific choice to make Comment from : boog_masskwé |
not only that, but the electric infrastructure isnt thereand you have to wait a longgggg time just to charge it up it's not practical right now Comment from : Andizzle |
Ok boomer Comment from : Thien Phuc Cuong Nguyen |
Minus the F150 Lightning and Future Chevy and Hyundai vehicles, they are super ugly And I’m definitely not sitting in a parking lot during a rode trip leaving Cheetos crumbs for only a few mins of charge 😒 Comment from : Ricardo R |
I take advantage of the free fast chargers in LA Zero fueling costs Saving hundreds every month Comment from : DanielS |
I'm 29¢ in the winter in Massachusetts, which in my car makes it equivalent to $401 per gallon of gas If gas is under $4, gas is cheaper than electricity!! Comment from : Dan N |
you state Subaru has the highest retained value at 66 percent and a Tesla has about 58 percent The Tesla costs about twice as much and the depreciation amount in dollars per day is about twice as much as the Subaru brbrWhy not compare this to an expensive bmw I bet the numbers would look much closer or possibly even in teslas favor Comment from : Brett Domenick |
I find these arguments poorly researched and one sided Shame this was on CNET I like CNET and expected better quality Comment from : Anthony Francis |
This was a waste 🙄 Comment from : Stevens Lifestyle |
Garbage 🗑 How about comparing depreciation on $60k BMW with a $60k Tesla? That is more appropriate Almost all Tesla owners charge at home and if they have solar they are paying $0 for everyday driving $0 Stupid show Unsubscribe Comment from : Max Tom |
