Most of this video was him criticizing the wrong way to learn a language Finally gave us the "prioritize the 1000 most common words" and "the goal is to speak and be understood by locals" important stuff towards the end I think how to videos should be more direct but that's just me Comment from : LookMan MyBad |
Trying to learn French Thank you Your method is the most rational I have been playing Perrier’s adventures in French, using Duo Lingo, and changing all of my video game dialogue languages to French Though, I had no definitive strategies apart from emersion Comment from : Inevitable Eventuality |

But that's another kind of math just a math that is more complex Math is beautiful too Comment from : Imal Kavinda Wickramasingha |

congratulazioni brIf you learn Italian, is less hard also learning portuguese ams Spanish Comment from : David Lopes |
I agree with your assessment and I too have known that about school language programs Now why didn't you make your own video concise and to the point instead of exactly like a 4-year grueling minor of a foreign language? Comment from : D Ruiz |
It's good to have your opinion and techniques, which I agree with, but man how much you repeat yourself! Actually that's so American of you A good concept but turned into much more than it is Comment from : Ivan Mathias |
it still blows my mind how i learned english, i was 7 and my dad went on a business' trip to Sweden for 3 years and we went with him too (because 3 years is a long time to be separated) and the way i learned english was to just watch videos on youtube , that was itbrto this day i know nothing about proper grammar or what all the definitions mean but as you can see i read, write and speak english wery well Comment from : mohhamad pouya mollavali |
One think I disagree with you here, is that "fluency" is not the final castle in your map "Fluency" is the more straight path to the side quest that requires the three steps that you mentioned It can be much easier to acquire with proper speaking practice with natives than mastery, and the traditional way languages are taught at schools don't really help you reach fluencybrbrThe final castle with all the gates with learning all the perfect grammar is what I called "mastery" It is indeed possible to pass the tests for "mastery" without gaining "fluency", and yeah, it'll be painful journey and pretty pointless There's no replacing actual speaking practice to gain fluency Comment from : yvrelna |
English isn't my native language, I never pay attention in class yet I ace my exams without studying brThis made me realize that the way people are approaching language learning is very wrong brThe teachers who have studied the grammar and what not extensively make mistakes all the time while I rarely do Comment from : Big Buba |
I think of fluency as a spectrum Some languages I study I never intend to develop to full fluency; I’m dabbling! Others I want native-level fluency bc I know that I want a wider breadth of abilities I think it’s similar to hobby gaming versus like pro level gamers that learn cheat codes and try different ways to defeat bosses Comment from : Kayla Moses |
if that was your italian i dont want to hear your spanish Comment from : Mega Foxatron 3rd |
Sure, you don’t have to know what the terms “past conditional” and “present imperative” mean to learn a language, but you do have to know how to use them I don’t think you’re fluent if someone tells you to do something and you don’t understand because you don’t know the imperative form of verbs brSaying “I want to be able to have a conversation” but not caring about knowing the when to use different conjugations of verbs is a pointless exercise Comment from : Christian Loizou |
This seems fun, I think I'll try it on Chinesse cuz I've tried to study it on Youtube, Coursera or the study center but nothing seems to be working for me, this will not be my last attempt but I think it will be fun Comment from : Quách Chân Nghiêm |

There are many ways to help learn a languagebrI’ve made many videos teaching Chinese language vividly and in a humorous way I hope somebody can recommend my videos to those who want to learn Chinese For beginners, Chinese characters may look complicated But once you learn about 100 basic radicals, most characters become easy
brI hope more people can learn Chinese to get comprehensive firsthand information about China Comment from : Henry Guo Teach Chinese in Jokes and Tell Jokes |

You're right " you must speak as soon as possible" but you forgot to mention another necessary trick and it's you need to immerse in that language environmentbrbrWhen everyone were growing up we were able to learn listening, memorizing, speaking etcbrbrNow I'm still learning English and talking about my experience it has been nice and exhausted, 'cause no one teach you how it's the correct way to talk, they only guess you're studying that language bacause of professionalism or job opportunities and it is good but unfortunately many people don't know how to differentiate meaning of "speak" and "communicate" that a common mistake when we learn some abroad languagebrbrI"ll almost be reaching English B2 but at the same time I begun learning French, I've learning for 2 days and I'll use the same tricks and methods that it worked on me before, experience is also necessarybrbrI'm grateful for your experience, it'll work on a lot of people :3brbrPS I'm a huge fan of zelda franchise as well hahaha Comment from : Fredy Jacob Choxóm Martinez |

I agree with you 100!!!brThe only detail I might not agree with is that those physical cards for me are better made in digital format with the Anki app… I'm studying Japanese… I tried several times and I never got it I abandoned it and I live in Japan so I couldn't learn it until I started the method you say that is, learn a language to SURVIVE! Where is the restroom ? learn the most used words, to hell with grammar, particles, etcbrAfter I increased my vocabulary and could already make myself understood, I began to learn phrases to shape my Japanese caveman, today you have chatgpt and it could help create simple phrases and I put all of these into my Anki app… And of course only at the end do I have to learn the grammar! Already with a lot of vocabulary and practicing phrases, I only added phrases applying the use of those rules! 👍👍brAnd so finally, today I can finally get around in Japanese at an intermediate level and converse and joke, something I couldn't do beforebrbrbr brbrCoincido 100 contigo !!! brEl único detalle que podría no estar de acuerdo es que esas tarjetas físicas para mí es mejor hacerlas en formato digital con la aplicación Anki … estoy estudiando japonés …

This month I started [finally] learning the local language and it is really cool 'All' training is in the target language with no cross references to Englishexcept the ones I inject, which is a small problem Just passed 500 words in my potential vocabulary Very cool process Comment from : Byron Watts |

From my experience in learning languages , I think that the most important thing that if you can do , you’ll be fluent in any language which is just have fun and never ever memorize words by itself Comment from : Osama yoo |
I speak Portuguese and English fluently (here is that word, you talked about) well, learning French was a breeze for me, mainly because I would recognize about 60 of French words right off Why? English is loaded with French words Portuguese and French are cousins (Well!… twice removed) Nonetheless, during the pandemic I learned enough to converse with any cab driver in France, except those in Paris, of course Italian and Spanish ? Well I don't even try…I simply understand them by birth rights Romanian is a different story though…rsrsrs German…no way…too many portmanteau words Comment from : Lecir Moreira |

Loved the video! I was wondering if you could share the list of Italian words? That would be amazing and highly appreciated! Comment from : Gerardo Fallas |
As a Brazilian, what impresses me the most is your accent, Italian being in a phonetic branch (romance language) other than English (anglo-saxon language) which is phonetically very different We can see that you make an effort to apply grammar, but in the end it comes out good Comment from : Cesar Gil |
ahahaha notice he had to add a disclaimer CLASSIC :) ;-) mans has respect for adding a disclaimer lol but to summarize the video - is to basically to memorize the ass out of certain words Comment from : Good_G-Fenzi |
14:50 Everyone is where he actually starts to talk seriously rather than beat around the bush for y'all wondering why he keeps repeating the word fluency like a broken record lol The video goose on and on and on and I'm like mans is beating around a bush here Comment from : Good_G-Fenzi |
I see where youre coming from, in my opinion it should be in that order: first communication, second working on perfektion if you want to My language goal is to speak icelandic on a near native level I will have to put in the work and gather all the korok seeds but still, the ability to communicate comes first I can polish up my accent, get the perfect grammar later and aquire it over time For now i want to be able to understand and be understood Comment from : Drachenschnauze |
I can’t agree to your concept of learning a languagethanks to you I have more confidence now to go forwardthanks a lot Comment from : Sk Rizwan Hossain |
So, he speaks fluent Spanish, has a high level of French knowledge and has pinned his learning methods as revolutionary because he picked up Italian quickly? brI learned English pretty quickly too, full disclaimer; I did speak Australian fluently and studied Latin for a few years prior so I guess i had some advantage lol Comment from : Jacob Holgate |
You lost me at the "ate an apple" example I would totally correct my kid if he told me he "eated an apple" Grammar does matter Now, if a stranger said that to me who was just trying to communicate different story Comment from : Phades |
Why don't you like JKRoling? Comment from : Mimo |

Comment from : Paolo Grisanti |
I'm an English as a second language tutor and I totally agree with you Unfortunately, most coursebooks, traditional teaching methods, and ideologies from marketing campaigns are far from the ideas presented here But things are changing You've given me insights to help my beginner students; I always struggle with them brbrI'd like to comment on the idea that only "native speakers" are worth talking to I believe we should be prepared to communicate with all speakers of the target language, not just natives For English, for instance, most students will use it to talk to others whose first language isn't English I don't think native speakers should be the only ones we learn from and communicate with, even at the beginner level Students can practice speaking the language with other students from their own or another country That said, great video! Comment from : Barbara |
Fluency in a language means that you can substitute the language you are using in daily life and professional activities from your mother tongue to the target foreign language It apparently involves being able to read and write, and speak at a decent level, and those subjunctives and conditionals you were unhappy about in the video are used in the language at that decent level You used those constructions while you were talking as well as some advanced vocabulary, however you were really upset about the linguistic community mentioning the importance of those topics while learning a foreign language Obviously, you won't need that at the very beginning of your journey, but as soon as you consider having a talk deeper than ordering a baguette or discussing the weather, you might as well need those complex and perplexing things Comment from : Egor Kurakin |
you got me in your definition of fluency, nice job man! Comment from : O caminho do inglês |
Is this different from the pimsleur method? Comment from : NinossoniN |
I would like to create a map like this easily I need some Tilesets to make one like yours Could anybody help me ? Comment from : Hellenic Minds Co |
yeah that's true they teach you like learning music theory but you never practice on an instrument, you know how chords are made, modes scales you know how they sound alone, together you can even write music on paper and do counter point and writing in odd timings, key changes etc but you never actually played a note on an instrument especially with multiple other instruments you wouldn't be able to play, it's like being able to play one instrument like guitar and going to trumpet you would need to learn and build up the skills in that instrument the fact you know music theory definitely helps but it doesn't make you a master of every instrument Comment from : James R Morris |
Your Italian is easily understandable, great results and congrats Comment from : weird_steak |
Daek Souls is more like a language learning Comment from : Useless Avgust |
I totally get where you're coming from about not really clicking with the whole classroom-style language learning thing And honestly, I'm with you on that Here's what I think works like a charm: imagine jetting off to a country where they speak the language you're itching to learn Spend around three months soaking up the vibes there – that's the secret sauce for getting super fluent
br
brOh, and here's a quirky tip: if you catch a snippet of your own language being chatted around, make a quick exit It might sound odd, but trust me, in just three months, you could be talking like a pro Of course, I get that not everyone can just up and leave for that long, but if you're one of the lucky ones who can swing it, seriously, give it a shot
br
brSpeaking a bunch of languages without tripping over your words? It's like your mind does a happy dance! Seriously, it's like thinking outside the box on turbo mode – mega handy, especially for what you're into Plus, there's a whole bunch of other awesome perks that tag along with being multilingual, believe me! Comment from : Marcko Kinsbourg |
Do you hate JK Rowling bc she’s a feminist? Why do you hate women bro, not cool Comment from : thermopylos |
Isn't imperitive always in the present tense? Also, I'm literally looking for a Switch game that teaches a foreign language You've renewed my desire to learn another language! Comment from : Robert Finicum |

What most people don't realize is that each individual is going to find a different learning methods to be more useful to them One learning method isn't going to work on everyone and each person needs to find what works best for him/herself Comment from : PJC1981 |
Fluency is B2 or C1, let's be real Fluent means to be able to speak a language without many pauses It comes from latin fluens which means flowing (like a stream of water) So if you're speech and comprehension isn't flowing like a stream, you aren't fluent Comment from : M V |
Et maintenant, savez-vous comment acheter une baguette dans une boulangerie française? Comment from : Thebraids |

First the main quests than the side quests you say 🤔 Comment from : Emin Somuncu |
The funny thing about you mentioning Legend of Zelda and languages is the concept that "Link" would have to learn the alphabet, letter form and sentence structure of the languages in every Kingdom, you have to interact with Just to get directions or to communicate with the shops in order to continue the quests Deku would grow from seed and expand into branches from bottom up Goron would be like digging tunnels from top-down, and Zora would be like swimming, pushing the words in one direction as the sentence flows in the other direction Comment from : dereck brajevich |
No one can go from knowing zero Italian to "understanding almost everything" in four months unless you already had very good knowledge of other Romance languages Comment from : Mathew Di Salvo |
The only rules I wouldn’t leave for the end are things like alphabets and pronunciation, especially for languages that are vastly different from your native language It’s good to get your mouth and your eats used to those sounds early on Comment from : I’m trying -_- |
That alttp map is whack lol Comment from : Zanenoth |

It was really a great idea to have wine delivered to people during the pandemic Super helpful for their well being 🥴 Comment from : Antonio Silva |

17:18 theorically, if the kid said "I want a apple" instead of "an apple", wouldn't he be confused at the addition of "an"? Comment from : Bawower |

Those four years of French might not have given you FLUENCY, but that diligence you earned can't be taken away Comment from : Fer |
Anime in 2:33? Comment from : Archil15 |
The post-structuralists have had this concept about learning, where the subject of learning could be imagined as a small part of the huge mycelium, where everything is chaotically connected I feel, that this could be said the same about a language Even though the language appears to have its logical structure, the process of learning itself is like going through that mycelium and trying to connect and implement all the roots into the logic Comment from : Jurijus Klimavičius |
Nice Comment from : Harry Potter |
How is this method of language learning called? Comment from : AMonteverdi |
why do people always neglect pronunciation, what is the fun in being fluent but sounding like shit? It was the first thing I perfected learning italian before even knowing how to say a lot of things I learned to pronounce everything I read The most fun I've had speaking italian or english comes from how the mouth feels trying to pronounce words that doesnt sound like my native language Comment from : el Edo Russo |
Is that really what your experience was with language teachers? Memorizing subjunctive forms ? Comment from : Nick B |
This guy looks like Paul Sparks before he got old You know, when he was acting in House of Cards Comment from : Alkis05 |

A few years ago, I attempted to play Breath of the Wild for the first time Instead of going through the story and taking the path to Kakariko Village (the intended route), I went straight into the most dangerous area of the game Thinking the game was impossible, I quit I put the game down for years I now see that I'm doing the same thing with learning languages, though I wasn't learning common languages but rather Scottish Gaelic and Arabic, it still applies Comment from : Emrys Williams |
