Honestly, I don't know if a drummer in a musical group is that important What I know is that this guy, Peter Best, must be an extremely British guy when it comes to his personal stance, as he never complained in the media about being excluded from the group The reasons belong to the three and more to the group manager Maybe the issue was aesthetic, maybe, maybe, maybe Comment from : João Paulo da Fontoura |
Ringo has to be one of the worst drummers in rock history An absolute twat Comment from : Paul Thurston |
John, Paul, George were average musicians; but they caught icon fire Respect to Pete Best Comment from : Maurice Gilliam |
Wowthe more I read of these comments in defense of Pete best the person, while totally ignoring his deficiencies as a drummer, it becomes depressing That sort of retro burnishing of the facts implies that those in the Pete camp would have preferred the Beatles to remain a local club act at most, and never have ascended to international world changing stardom Yes, Pete would have held them back to a level of obscurity that would make his defenders akin to the population at large in the movie "Yesterday" Paul would have had a career after the Beatles inevitable split by mid '63, and so long as he and John remained pals, they may have written some tunes that are known today, but the fact isif Pete had not been replaced by Ringo, the Beatles as we know them would NEVER have existed Find the 51 seconds clip of John's comment right here on Youtube if you need to hear it directly and refuse to face facts when listening to Pete's barely acceptable drumming skills brPete should count his lucky stars to have been associated with the biggest entertainment phenomenon of the 20th centurybrand accept that as a drummer, his time as place holder on the kit had reached it's logical conclusion when he was axed Comment from : charlyW34 |
So Pete played the same beat throughout the song He was clever Comment from : Michael Constatine |
Im a multi instrumentalist and started on drums Im not saying this is the most interesting or intricate drumming but it no way lines up with "he couldnt keep time" Over all i find it solid not particularly interesting but decent enough i can tell why they hired him and kept him around for 2 years Comment from : madz panda |
Pete Best didnt know his instrument nor the groove required that comes with a feel for music Very uninspired and almost awkward imo If he had the feel & potential he'd of gotten picked rt up by another band His path in life shows music wasnt a priority for him or he struggled finding his niche and couldnt expand or evolve Comment from : steve flynn |
This is totally a song where the drummer needs to hit those fills and the oppurtunity is there and door is wide open and Pete plays way to conservatively and quite frankly boring & uninspired Comment from : steve flynn |
Ringo's drumming was much more creative than Pete's, yet with great feel for the song The idea that Ringo was brought in for his personality is ridiculous; he was brought in for his drumming The Decca audition recordings demonstrate that the band wasn't really "The Beatles!" until Ringo joined on drums Comment from : Andrew Furst |
Pete's drumming isn't that bad Lennon was jealous of Pete Comment from : Wesley Cook |
If memory serves me correctly Ringo didn't exactly play drums on the Beatles first hit which to my guitar players ear doesn't seem to demanding for a drummer Comment from : jack freeman |
I Really Dig this Jam also the Original by MOTOWN BERRY STRONG, Maybe Early MIRACLES did a Version too BEATLES FAN 4 Ever❤ Comment from : norman brown |
Let's not beat around the bush: Pete Best was terrible People always go "Pete Best was good, but" or "Pete Best wasn't bad, but", it's just insincere Just listen to this song The drums have no progression It's the same thing for a long time It sounds like a good band who has no drummer and paid $50 to some guy to fill in Comment from : Ray Stinger |
Wow … Comment from : Hail Mary Recordings |
Decca did the right thing This is not goldbrAnd PB was a mediocre drummer, sorry guysbrGeorge's instincts were spot-on Comment from : RedArrow73 |
Yeah, I can seen now why they changed drummers No changes, could just have a washing machine running in the background and jam to that Best was OK but nothing to great A band with three greats and one OK is still going to be OK not great Comment from : Peter Grandahl |
Speed's too fast Comment from : Akbar Lebowitz |
Great cover but I like the original best Comment from : Ruth Shaw |
This recording shows indirectly what Ringo contributed to the Beatles There is a more pushy 'personality' in Ringo's drumming which pushes their sound forward, making it both choppier and bigger; more dramatic and more difficult to ignore Comment from : Neil Óg |
Pete Best was stone cold good looking but John said he wasn’t a good drummer Comment from : DL L |
You can hear Pete Best was a damn good drummer the timing is great What's interesting is the recording level of his drums is clearly too low here doesn't have that punch That's not Best's fault Decca more likely wanting to really feature John's vocals I wonder if Martin was influenced by the Decca recordings too much when talks of sacking Best started? FWIW I think Ringo is a major key to the Beatles success his left handed drum style is super unique and he was very powerful Comment from : P C |
ringo had charisma, best did not Comment from : Walter Peebles |
The Beatch Boys Comment from : ro jo |
Easily the best track on the Decca audition which was overall pretty terrible Comment from : sav |
Regardless, Mr Best is one of a very small club Someone who can put ex Beatle on his cv and for that he gets my respect Fair enough, he was replaced just prior to take off , but he was still a Beatle Comment from : David Coburn |
This sounds gritty and raw and awesome but I do see where they improved on their playing of the song and what Ringo brought in Pete is not bad at all but just different Comment from : Kelven Dyson |

Check out the drummer from the Hollies a contemporary band fron Manchester I'm no expert b ut I think he is outstanding on 'look through any window' John was a great fan of the Hollies Comment from : Philip Thornton |
Pete Best just plays the same 4/4 beat throughout with no fills or dynamic variation Lennon said that this was all he could do and clearly it wasn't enough, particularly when the Beatles started playing more melodic and complex songs Comment from : Andy Dempster |

Pete Best was a very good Rock n Roll drummer Comment from : B Graham |

All this trash about how the other three wanted Pete Best out of The Beatles "because they didn't like his drumming and thought Ringo was the greatest drummer" Are you joking? There's a documentary on Youtube that proves they asked not one but two other drummers to join them before they ever got around to asking Ringo, and the only reason they asked Rongo to join is because the first two turned them downbrSo, as a last resort, they got Brian Epstein to ask Ringo if he would join the group But only after the first two, much better drummers turned John, Paul, and George downbrLikewise, it was Pete Best who was mobbed by fans The screaming crowds ordered the other three to sit to the side of the stage at The Cavern and other venues so the fans could see Pete brWho was really the odd man out in The Beatles? It was George He was just a kid, and he was treated that way Pete and John were close in age, and got along well, while John and Paul worked out songs together And all three had little time for that child, George Harrison So George started thinking of ways to get Pete out of the group, with the idea that he would be friends with the new drummer That's how it started Save us the lie about Pete Best being "a terrible drummer" when, in fact, all the other drummers in Liverpool used to line up near the stage to study Pete's drumming so they could copy it And Pete was mobbed by screaming fans after every gig, leaving the other three to stand to the side and watch it happen, or sit solemnly in the van, looking into the parking lot as Pete was surrounded by screaming, adoring fansbrEnough of the lies about Pete Best Give it a rest, and accept the truth of what happened in 1962 Comment from : The New Yorker |

Someone is misleading is with this YouTube postbrThis is DEFINITELY NOT Pete Best's drumming!brYou will hear Pete Best''s drumming on recording of Love Me Do during Decca recording session , which failed to impress Decca Comment from : Anindya Majumdar |
This is NOT Pete Best's drumming!brThis is Ringo's drummingbrIt sounds like a tight knit performance which beatles never achieved with Pete best Comment from : Anindya Majumdar |
Yeah, as a drummer myself, I can see that this is a great example of why Ringo joining was one of the best things to happen to The Beatles Pete doesn't change here, simply grabbing on to the beat and hoping things will work out Doesn't sound bad by any means, but is pretty ordinary and not at all what a song like this calls for Part of what makes the song work (both in covers and in the original version) is the dynamic shift in the drumming between the verse and chorus brbrThe hits on the tom and sometimes the snare during the singing part of the verses make the shift to the riff between the lyrics as well as the transition to the louder chorus pack a real punch, not to mention the drums hitting the snare in time with the guitar when transitioning back to the verses pack a real punch as well Pete doesn't do any of that at all here, it's almost like he doesn't really know the song and is just hoping that one pattern and fill repeated from start to finish will be enough, not playing off the guitars or anything brbrRingo would nail the song just a few months later, even putting his own little spin on it He brought the ride cymbal in and out for even more dynamic effects, he added all the snare hits and dynamic shifts from the original Motown version and even added his own snare hits that play off the vocals in the verses, which was not done even in the original Barrett Strong version Comment from : Caleb Sankey |
What amazed me most about this was the amount of pictures of The Beatles taken at the start of their career Comment from : Gary White |
Love the music ❤️🎤🎸🥁 Comment from : Patricia Kimbrell |
The drums are the weak link in this song It's obvious that Best wasn't the musician the other three were Comment from : The Cawd Squad |
Little known factoid: They had to get rid of Pete Best, because if they'd kept him, they would have needed to name their band, "The Bestials" and well, their neighbor's dog told them not to do it Or, to do it, depending on what "it" is Or was Comment from : This is my real name |
After the Beatles dumped him, Pete Best ended up working in a bread factory He was so close, but ended up so far from stardom Comment from : Kevin OBrien |
Why is it not been a movie of Pete Best Life? Comment from : David M Wigdal |

Is Pete playing behind the beat? Sounds like he's lagging Comment from : Thomas Robinson |
The drummer must have gone on his coffee break Comment from : Olivier Kaestlé |
To be fair The drumming is fine Ringo really leaned into the drums Just more power and fizz But this is a decent drum track Comment from : foggythedrum |

The best rock and roll voice ever Comment from : Julian Roberts |
Pete Best was the best drummer the Beatles had He wasn’t a yes man Comment from : Richard Bowen |
Pete drums well on this song and does nothing wrong The differences are Pete plays it between "Surf Style" aka Wipe Out (16th note triplets?) and 8th notes (which is a cool mix up) and at a faster tempo compared to Ringo - what Ringo does is keep it at 8th notes and empathises the end of the chorus into the verse on the floor tom and snare but the big thing Ringo does is play on the ride cymbal on the last lot of choruses which 'lifts' the song and opens it up One could argue that Pete was more technical on this song but one could also argue that Ringo was more dynamic with the song Comment from : Doug Warren |
Pete's drumming on here is more of a shuffle than anything He looks the part in those early photos but aside from Money, it wasn't what they wanted Comment from : ClintHill |
Ringo for me, man No offense Pete Comment from : StephenS |
The drums sound good on this Comment from : Wheres_bears |
John was quoted with saying that the Beatles were at their best as a band during all those years before they were ever recorded By the time Epstein came along it was all over, and their best work was before thatbrbrOddly enough this was when Pete was their drummer Comment from : Joe Simon |
Theese earlier recordings had a rockabilly groove Very cool! Comment from : G&L G&L |
No power on his drumming Comment from : Alfredo Perez |
The tempo is too fast In Pete's defense, the reason it's too fast is because of the guitars that started the song The groove isn't there like their recording of it with Ringo Musically, it sounds a little too neurotic & has too much of a "surf" beat Aside from that, The lead vocal by Lennon is great & so are the answer backs by Paul & George Comment from : Yesterday Productions |
a mix between surf rock and garage rock,,,Incredible!!! Comment from : Maximiliano Iramain |
pete makes this song sound like an avalanche falling, ringo has a lot more swing Comment from : Mati |
Drums sound fine to me Certainly competent enough Comment from : NamiK Studios |
Drum sucks Comment from : Brian Griffin |
He's just "playing along", really pedestrian, passing up opportunities to accent or set up parts of the song! Comment from : Supa_ Frogg |
Aside from the vocals, it does sound kind of lifeless I’m not sure if I’d blame it all on Pete…the rhythm just sounds unimpressive Comment from : UAL320 |
Something about the droning base beat that I really like I do think Ringo's drum part was better but I can see being in a club listening to this and really getting into it Comment from : Not Sure - 2020 |
Pete doesn’t know how to do fills and make it his own the way Ringo makes those same tracks, only one drummer sounds like a Beatles Comment from : Joe Ceonnia |
Pete was damn sure no Ringo Comment from : Myles Brooklyn |
I wish people would stop arguing about Pete and Ringo They're both millionaires and in the history books Which is more than I can say for all of us What tripe Comment from : Charles Watts |
that floor tom is overused from Best to Star any day and personality to boot ! Comment from : Graham Davies |
Pete Best sucks He has no clue how to fill for this song Comment from : Anthony Pace |
Poor Pete couldn't keep the beat magical regardless Comment from : Strat Cat |
Pete best sucked from 1958 - present Comment from : Rudolph Guarnacci |
The real problem is that few people have Lennon's, McCartney's or Harrison's musical ears They heard the difference and made the choice Hard to criticize the results Comment from : phillip marmanillo |
Apparently there aren't any professionals in what ive seen of the commentary because Bests tempo is any thing but steady as well as the type of beat he is using is inappropriate for the song Should have also been some sort of flourish at the end Comment from : robert brownlee |
People who are not into music will not note major difference in the drummingtoo bad John and Paul did not tell him directly "hey man, you are not the right material for this band" That would have solved many fake stories about Pete being kicked out of the band for no reason😱 Comment from : javico79 |
The drumming in this lacks spice! Like it's muffled Under water That's why he wasn't going to last here Should've worked with The Shadows or The Beach Boys ;) Comment from : Tim LAndre |
