Blackhorn 209 can give amazing results But it's preposterously rare and expensive That being the case, loose Swiss traditional black powder should be the standard for testing muzzleloader performance brbrI'd guess that relative to other, cheaper, in-line muzzle-loaders the blackhorn is doing more work than the CVA, especially if you're pairing it with magnum primersbrbrNo pelletized powder will get you anywhere near the performance of blackhorn I'm honestly kind of worried that you actually know better and are misleading your audience for the benefit of CVA Comment from : Milo |
How many of these 257,000 views were because men were searching for videos with the words “barely legal” in the title? Nice job of click bait Next time try “Naughty cheerleaders long range shooting” Comment from : Dr Blood |
Are you using a Cci BR2 primer? Comment from : The Douglas Brothers |
I have a CVA Optima Love it 👍👍 Comment from : Lyndon Hamby |
I have a CVA Wolf plain jane I use white hots, 209s, and the hornady bullets It's the most accurate rifle I own Single hole to maybe5 MOA> Freakin unrealbrI hated any other bullet especially PowerBelts Comment from : Mogulrider |
In Arkansas they give you two bow, two muzzleloader, and two modern gun tags when you get a hunting license Comment from : Stephen Vickers |
Trying to find this rifle, most sites say discontinued Anyone know what the deal is and if it is what's a comparable substitute for it? Comment from : Sloane |
Would it be accurate to say your setup was shooting a heavier 45 cal bullet faster than a br250 or 260 grain 450 bushmaster? I wonder how fast a 45-70 commercial load shoots at that bullet weight I wonder how much the cost compares ? great video as always! Comment from : DOGWOMAN55 |
Millenials invent the centerfire cartridge Comment from : Ted Archer |
Remington already did a bolt muzzleloader with their 700 action about 20-30 yrs ago It didn't really take hold🥱👍 Comment from : Greg Morrison |
What scope u have and base and rings buddy just got same gun Comment from : Whitetail’s Up |
Being a Utah native (salt laker) myself, I'm happy I discovered this 😎 Comment from : 2S1L3NT |
Yes you can, can it's not a firearm It's nearly the same class as an air rifle It would have to be a cleanable can for sure It would also be best to get one with one of the air rifle threads so the can could not be easily threaded on an actual firearm Comment from : Lucas Heinze |
That rifle looks amazing! But Oregon muzzleloader regulations state a hard no against it lol! Comment from : Yo Boo |
I hate the bolts on muzzloaders its so dumb just keep it break action Comment from : Jarrett M |
I think I’ll stick with my sub &300 CVA optima as opposed to buying a $1500 paramount To each there own I guess though Comment from : Ryan Walters |
Love my muzzleloader When you take an animal with that setup, let me know what you think of the damage that it inflicts to both the internal organs and the meat in comparison to a standard high-powered rifle cartridge Out of my Savage ML, I'm pushing a 300gr SST a little faster than what you're getting, and I've never seen a high power rifle do anywhere near this much damage Comment from : No Spam |
One thing to know about muzzleloaders The industry specifies everything related to powder vy volume and 100gr by weight of loose powder is not the same as 100gr of loose powder by volume It's like ounces vs ounces (fl) Generally speaking, most BP substitutes are more dense than actual black powder meaning that your 100gr by weight could be as much as 150 gr by volume I know that with T7, 150 gr by volume (normally considered a max load for the stronger muzzleloader designs) is only around 130gr by weight Not sure how Buckhorn compare, but you SHOULD take a 150gr by volume charge and weigh it to know what your max recommend charge is by weight Comment from : No Spam |
Be careful what type of projectiles you are shooting at those speeds Jacketed projectiles and monolithic copper alloys are fine Avoid standard lead and plated lead bullets if you're pushing 2200 fps or more At those speeds, accuracy goes south with lead I've heard that it's because air friction will start to soften the lead, but I don't know if that part is true I just know that the accuracy drops off quickly Comment from : No Spam |
I get 1" groups at 100 yards with my cva optima It took some trial and error with different powders, sabots and bullets to get the right combination for that accuracy but now that I have it the ML is deadly to whitetail Comment from : dc has |
Great video brAndbrJust a 2 penny worth brIf you will go up to 350-375 grain saboted lead bullets brThat optima will make clover leafs all day long brOr at least mine will brKeep up the good work brYou give a great honest opinion Comment from : Steven Dowell |
I have a remington 700 muzzle loader I hate it I love my cva break actions Comment from : Jason Ogle |
I use a muzzle loading handgun 35 cal or bigger which includes multi shot muzzle loaders in Michigan I found rolling paper cartridges is faster, like the cowboys used Also use a cva Optima pistol I get super sonic speeds even out of muzzle loader handguns Here we can saw off muzzle loaders I carry a muzzle loading pistol as side arm and because legal to take game with Comment from : Eli In the Wolverine State |
That’s an impressive amount of power You’re talking 3550+ Ft Lbs of energy with those numbers That’s nearly 375 H&H Magnum ballistics at closer ranges!!! Comment from : Carey Hammett |
All of these "improvements" completely defeat the purpose of hunting with a muzzleloader imo If you want incredible accuracy, long range, and easy reloading, we already have that it's called a center fire rifle All of this bending of the rules will just lead to shorter/more restrictive muzzleloader hunting opportunities Muzzleloaders should be a kin to archery A classic Hawken or something like that is what comes to mind The whole appeal is that you have a serious challenge BECAUSE of all the extra steps involved Just my opinion Comment from : Teo Lobot |
Get you some Barnes 250 grain tmz copper muzzle loader bullets and your accuracy will go through the roof because it’s tight in the bore I have a bad bull muzzle loader myself I shoot a 275 grain bullet at 3100 fps at 6000 fp of energy I have consistently killed deer out to 400 yards Comment from : Edward H |
i don’t have seasons i can hunt with center fires whenever Comment from : ricci smith |
I love my 45 caliber savage Comment from : Lethal Weaboo |
Whats the legality of using this in california for muoe deer? Comment from : Andrew |
Got an email from the udwr and it looks like they're going to change the muzzle loader hunts next year to a traditional muzzle loader and a general muzzle loader hunt that will help the cap and ball guy's have a chance and still have a hunt for the inline hunter 👍 Comment from : Ed Welch |
Definitely from Utah he does not pronounce his T’s Comment from : Robert Hokanson |
My CVA accura with like a 375ish power belt was 1” all day at 100 yards I shot a deer at 165 yards Loved that gun But sold it afterwards Comment from : Spud Hunter |
The 40 cal version gives all sorts of problems until you switch to smooth sizing a full bore bulletthe powerbelts suck Comment from : The Dangler |
Not putting your rifle down at all I follow the Hank Hill teachings that, "They're all nice guns, and all guns are nice" However, during the Civil War there were hundreds of documented muzzle-loader percussion-lock rifles and shooters making consistant kills at distances reaching over 2000 yards That said, I know people that couldn't hit the broad side of a barn if they were standing inside of it! 😄 I believe that 99 of the rifles made within the last 100+ years will out-shoot 99 of the people shooting them, in terms of accuracy out to as far as they can see In Idaho, the only things on that setup that are legal for the, maybe 2 muzzle-loader hunts we have, is the stock and sling 😁 That includes the jacketed bullet, sabots & pellet powders Legal for "any weapon," short range areas, and felons though And they're all fun as hell to shoot for any reason! Comment from : Eugene Deckard |
CVA is on a hell of a roll 👏 👏 Comment from : Wapiti Fit |

You can definitely use a can, look into griffin armament bushwhacker 46 and they have all sorts of mounting options Comment from : madbomer72 |

Do you have plans to review the CVA Cascade SB in 308 ? This rifle has a Bergara barrel and would like to see your thoughts on it Comment from : BRETT GECHA |
CVA has muzzle loaders that can take a 150 grn charge The 40 cal can send a 225grn power belt slug at 2750 fps, guaranteed 1 MAO, according to CVA That's a thousand yard muzzle loader! There's really nothing primitive about black powder anymore Comment from : bradh74 |
410a refrigerant tank that was used as a target?br brI use my empty jugs hung from trees Don't make much noise on impact though Comment from : James Mooney |
Hopefully your state bans these "basically single shot scoped rifles" from being used in a muzzleloader season Get back to the basics of hunting Stop making it easy killing for the lazy That's what Ted Nugent style game farms are for! Comment from : Dhoward |
What kind of primer does it use ? Comment from : CRAY-Z |
I live in Washington, we still use speers Comment from : MARC Plucinski |

What sling are you using? Would like to get one Comment from : jason dewart |
What sling are you using on that rifle? Comment from : Texas Josh |
4-5 inch groups at 100 yards IS NOT "good for a muzzleloader " at all Shameless plug for a gun that isn't even really a muzzleloader any more Leave it to fudds like you to push a primitive weapon to the point it isn't primitive any more Smh Comment from : Mighty Joe Young |
Awesome job Love the video! Iv done a lot of testing with muzzleloaders You can’t really compare accuracy between those two guns when one is firing blackhorn and one is shorting pellets If you’d fine tune a load of blackhorn for that optima you’d have a much tighter consistent group from that gun as well Stay safe and thank you! Comment from : Jarvis Outdoors |
Who makes your powder/bullet vile? Comment from : Alex Mlawsky |
What sling do you have on that gun? Comment from : jason dewart |
I couldn't use it in Nevada It would be illegal here It technically called a primitive hunting season We can't use magnified optics or any electronic sights Comment from : Jeff Davis |
Imagine standing in the desert talking to yourself about a muzzleloader… Comment from : T R |
About 8 years ago I bought a Traditions vortek ultralight 28 inch it consistently shoots sub 1 inch at 100 yards with 250gr shockwaves and 100grains of pyrodex 777 powder or pellets Recently I’ve switched to powder but both are on point I absolutely love that vortek Comment from : Jrbtz |
I’m so glad New Mexico officially banned scopes on muzzleloaders Comment from : Nico Morales |
First never shot black powder but Mississippi allows the CVA break action 45-70 and 35 whelen (200 and 250) and has a muzzle brake Second Deer are not shooting at you - Why the expensive camo, deer are also color blind and see in a Yellow vision only Blue and Green are seen also all the fancy camo clothes are shades of grey/green but as you move as a whole you are a dark object moving Like a deer 150yds away will see that shinny or a black barrel move and look right at you You need to let other hunters see you and wear the inexpensive hunter orange camo and yes you still need the vest, darn! I have had big bucks and does walk right by me wearing the Walmart hunter orange sweats I wear over my warm stuff I hunt in thick woods and want to be seen by hunters you also out on the open plaine with shooters 500 to 1000 yards away Also that camo is no good if washed in normal laundry soap it has brighteners and will make you glow like a state trooper's Kmart blue lights Yea I get laughed at sometimes but I am alive Comment from : Echo Auxgen |
I really looked forward to your video! I have been shooting muzzleloaders for a long time Mostly traditional muzzleloaders, flint, and percussion If any of them had a 4" grouping at 100 yards, I woulbrd bend the barrel about the nearest treebrYour information is false, and extra sensationalized brIn-lines are a great step forwardbrIf you think old fashion muzzleloaders shoot such a wide pattern, come on over and stick your ass over the nearest rock at 125 yards and let me take a shotif I miss you can return the favour I guarantee you will have a new rectal passage!brSo please make your videos telling the truthbrbrI rate your video with a BIG thumbs down! Comment from : Fred Ford |
I think the accuracy is from measuring your powder charge by weight instead of volume That's a consistent way to get a specific grain measure Comment from : Craig Brewer |
I love the enthusiasm, us muzzleloader guys have for a long time been enjoying good accuracy to 100 yardsbrDoing the same as smokeless handloading trying new components and combinations Comment from : 45-70 Guy |
if the 45 is special the 40 is super special I got mine and 100 yard groups about 3/4 of one inch Comment from : Tint Shop NC |
Is the Utah bullet weight just for muzzle loaders? If not a bunch of good rifles are useless by decree not logic Comment from : Andy Stampfli |
It should be illegal to use that kind of muzzleloader to hunt under the primitive muzzle loading season Comment from : Bob Sunkees |
If you were a true hunter not a glory boy youd hunt with a hawken Comment from : Steve Pardini |
Why can't you use a suppressor? Comment from : B B |
We still have to use lead projectiles with no sabot in Idaho for muzzleloader seasons We can't use a scope or 209 primers and if it's inline it has to have an exposed nipple Comment from : Jesus is Alive! |
Why couldn't you get a 45cal can??? Comment from : Joseph Bishop |
Shooting up hill can get you scopes, and hooting prone as well! Comment from : Joseph Bishop |

Muzzleloader season is a blast! I generally pull put the old Hawkins Sometimes it goes off Sometimes it doesn't Most people don't understand it lol Comment from : J Lavoie |
I'm a little prejudiced against these Growing up in PA we had flintlock season in January, which was exactly that, flintlock muzzle loaders only This to me is not a muzzle loader, may as well be shooting a centerfire rifle Comment from : Tim |
In maryland muzzleloading season is only 3 days in October but you can use it during firearm season it just depends on what country you are in Comment from : christopher bengel |
I honestly wish they would make it so all you could shoot was cap and ball in Utah it would make hunting better Comment from : Chase Hanson |
I never really heard the butt stomping velocity these things generate Considering that big bullet, you're basically generating 300 win mag recoil Comment from : TheTobaccoGuy ! |
My buddy shot a 4" group with this rifle last week At 385 yards Comment from : TheTobaccoGuy ! |
I like companies that stand behind their products so I will check out their backpacks Comment from : Michael Cox |

I’ve been hunting Illinois whitetail for years I gave up shotgun, tried ML once and didnt like it Killed a lot with bow I ML rifle like this might just get me back because we have 2 long weekends shotgun when we can also use ML and another weekend for ML only about 10 days all together If I could shoot 150 -200 yards with a ML I could live with that Comment from : Contemporary Primitive Man |

I shoot a T/C Encore and load: 100gr of Blackhorn powder, CCI 209M primer, 175gr PowerBelt bullet and get 2327fps Some might say that’s too light of a bullet but I’ve never had a deer do anything but drop dead I shot a big 8 point at 170yds and no problems Comment from : T Lloyd |
In Louisiana and Mississippi we have good muzzleloader laws 35 whelen single shot 👍👍 Comment from : david king |
