If someone asks you a question and you don't know the answer Here the two answers "I don't know" and "let me come back to you on that" are not totally the same it's not only a question of one being more polite than the other In the second answer you are promising/committing yourself to helping the one asking So, he or she may go back to you and ask the same question In the first one you are not promising anything
